Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC), the Karachi campus of National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) Islamabad, is proud to announce the 2012 Formula SAE project: a premier collegiate engineering competition which challenges students to apply their engineering concepts and skills in the design and fabrication of a prototype race car as per Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifications. The students must design and subsequently test the sports vehicle to optimize it for faster and reliable performance. The PNEC Formula SAE team (Formula NUST) is a group of budding engineers committed to experiencing high-end automotive design and engineering. Members of the PNEC Formula SAE team (Formula NUST) add a new dimension to their engineering knowledge and expertise during the practical application of their theoretical knowledge in such a project. Students exhibit immense dedication and commitment as they juggle their technical responsibilities to the team in parallel with an intense engineering degree course load. The students of PNEC have proven their metal in the past in various local and international competitions. Most notably the Shell Eco-Marathon, which is an international competition organized by Shell to promote development of eco-friendly cars for the future. Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) is the Karachi campus of NUST. Due to its unique location, Karachi, which is the commercial and industrial hub of the country, it plays a greater role in research and development activities. is a student design competition organized by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has commissioned college students to design, engineer and build Formula-style open cockpit race cars. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. Each team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules, whose purpose is both ensuring on-track safety (the cars are driven by students themselves) and promoting clever problem solving. Over 250 teams from around the world participate in this event which is conducted on various racing circuits around the globe. 10

This event tests the cornering capability of the race car as it travels around a figure-eight circuit. This event rates the quality of engineering design and innovations are judged. This event tests the ability for the vehicle to accelerate from rest over a 75 m distance. A cost report submitted by the teams is scrutinized with respect to the car being manufactures by a hypothetical industrial firm. The drivers must maneuver the car through the tight turns and slaloms without knocking over the cones. An objective presentation which delivers a comprehensive business case that convinces the judges that the teams design best meets the demands. Fuel economy is calculated over 22 km course which tests both the driver and the car. 12

Students from PNEC have a history accomplishing commendable feats and making their nation proud by achieving recognition the world over. Carrying on this tradition of excellence and hard work, Team Formula NUST is aiming to participate in the Formula SAE event in 2012. The team is highly motivated and has numerous innovative ideas. With your help, Team Formula NUST hopes to carry the national flag to the Formula SAE motor sports competition (a field where Pakistan is relatively unknown) and establish Pakistan as a serious competitor, further reinforcing our image as an upcoming industrial nation. 18

Team formula NUST has been diligently working on this project for one year. The design phase is now complete and we are in the process of commencing the fabrication of the car. 22

International Publicity: International Publicity: The SAE competitions attract over 140 teams and numerous corporate giants such as Airbus, Brawn GP, National Instruments, Shell etc. from all over the world, thus generating tremendous media interest as well as an opportunity to connect with many businesses, which could lead to potential corporate partnerships with your company. National & Local Publicity: The team plans to launch a marketing campaign to create awareness of Formula SAE events through which the team shall promote the project and its sponsors. The campaign includes : Media campaign on local radio channels and national television channels. Team posters to be put up in various educational institutions.
