The new ContiPremiumContact 2 meets increasing demands: Speed and safety are top priority (November 2005) Continental expects its new ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres to be in high demand. The reason is that the tyre meets all the market demands, particularly in terms of speed and safety. Experts assume that the market share of tyres approved for speeds of over 210 km/h will rise to as much as 40% over the next four years, because of the powerful engines fitted in medium, large and luxury cars. When buying tyres, what consumers expect above all is safety: short braking distances on wet and dry roads, with excellent handling characteristics - these requirements were precisely the development objectives for the new tyre from Continental s engineers in Hanover, Germany. ContiPremium Contact 2 Both the motor industry and consumers are keen to have faster medium, large and luxury cars. This in turn means that the demand for high-performance tyres will continue to grow. Even some compact hatchbacks have such powerful engines that some models require tyres approved for higher speed categories. A further reason for the growing share of high-speed tyres is the ever-increasing variety of wheel and tyre combinations fitted as Original Equipment. The trend is towards diversification, within a model range. The basic 5 Series BMW, for example, comes with 16 tyres, which have to be approved for at least 240 km/h. The top-of-the-range model is fitted with 19 tyres approved for speeds up to 300 km/h. For the consumer, safety and driving pleasure are top priorities. Short braking distances on both wet and dry roads, good aquaplaning protection and excellent handling characteristics even when driving at the limit are what is demanded from a tyre. Accordingly, these were the requirements made on the new ContiPremiumContact 2. Germany s leading tyre manufacturer, Continental claim We are convinced that our new tyre range for medium, large and luxury cars fully meet consumer expectations.
The new ContiPremiumContact 2 range will include 56 versions over 28 sizes, for rims from 15-18, approved for speeds of up to 300 km/h. The price of this tyre will be in line with that of its predecessor, which achieved sales of over 30 million units in five years. New ContiPremiumContact 2 with 3D groove: Short braking distances for even greater safety (November 2005) The new ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres set new standards in braking on wet and dry roads, thanks to their exceptional tread pattern design. Their distinctive feature is their 3D groove which has shallow and steep sides to ensure high tread block stability, even in critical driving situations such as making sharp manoeuvres. The new tyre, which was specifically developed for medium, large and luxury cars, also reflects the considerable progress achieved by the tyre developers at Continental in terms of aquaplaning performance, steering precision, driving stability and lowering rolling noise. The combination of an innovative tyre contour and third generation silica compound meant further improvements could be made to the mileage performance of the new ContiPremiumContact 2. The innovative 3D groove was developed by the engineers at Continental for the ContiPremiumContact 2; its steep and shallow sides enhance the safety of the tyre s driving characteristics on both wet and dry roads. The steep flank of the tread groove functions much like a windscreen wiper, penetrating the film of water and thereby ensuring that direct contact between the tyre and the road is maintained explains Dr. Frank Walloch, developer of the new tyre range This reduces braking distances on wet roads. The shallow side of the tread groove stiffens the tread pattern, thereby shortening braking distances on dry roads. Thanks to the sturdy tread lugs, there is always a very large contact area between the tyre and the road. A sturdy, circumferential rib on the tyre s outer shoulder also helps to keep braking distances short on dry roads. A further benefit of the 3D groove is the accelerated water dispersion from the ground contact patch. The interaction between the steep and shallow sides creates a swirl effect in the grooves, which accelerates water dispersion. The wide longitudinal grooves in the tread pattern pick up the water quickly, thereby ensuring good tread grip in the centre of the tyre. The combination of longitudinal and lateral grooves means that drivers are protected from aquaplaning - an additional bonus in terms of safety.
Asymmetrical design enhances handling characteristics The asymmetrical tread pattern enabled Continental to further improve both handling and comfort. The sturdy tread lugs found on the outer side of the tyre increase lateral guidance. They make the design more rigid and transmit steering commands quickly and precisely. The inner side of the tyre now features more tread blocks: This design allowed us to achieve low rolling noise and thus high driving comfort explains Dr. Frank Walloch. Innovative tyre contour reduces slip Further improvements to the tread contour have made the ground contact patch more harmonious with even pressure distribution. The flat belt contour below the tread reduces the slip which occurs when driving on the straight and cornering; overall this meant a further improvement in mileage performance. Thanks to the use of a new compound processing method, combined with a new type of silica and the integration of active carbon blacks, the tread is stiffer, enhancing handling and improved mileage performance. The sum total of these measures has meant progress in all tyre characteristics; the ContiPremiumContact 2 has reduced braking distances and improved handling, with enhanced aquaplaning safety. The new tyre is in line with the brand philosophy of the Hanover-based tyre manufacturer More safety = Continental. Continental wants to use the new ContiPremiumContact 2 tyre range to further develop its market position, not just in the replacement tyre market but also for Original Equipment. Continental is currently No. 1 in the European Original Equipment business, commanding a market share of over 26 per cent. One in four cars coming off the production line in Europe is fitted with Continental tyres. Over 30 million units of the predecessor ContiPremiumContact, were produced in five years and this tyre was fitted as Original Equipment by most leading car manufacturers in Europe. The Continental Group is a leading supplier of tyres, braking systems, suspension components, vehicle electronics and technical elastomers. In 2004 the company achieved a turnover of A$ 20.4 billion and currently employs 80,000 staff worldwide. The tyre business unit is an Official Partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany TM. Set your mind at rest with the new ContiPremiumContact 2 ContiPremiumContact 2 The new standard in safety & comfort features many technical innovations The innovative 3D groove The distinctive feature of the new ContiPremiumContact 2 is its unique 3D tread grooves, which optimise braking performance on both wet and dry roads. The shallow and steep sides of the 3D groove ensure high tread block stability and improved road contact even in critical driving situations. Optimum protection against aquaplaning is achieved by the angled grooves, which ensure water, under the tyre, is dispersed more quickly. Improved braking performance on dry roads The shallow side of the 3D groove gives greater tread block stability and improved road contact, which results in shorter braking distances on dry roads. Even when placed under great strain, the tread blocks do not bend away and so, the tyre retains maximum contact with the road. This more even contact pressure ensures maximum transmission of power to the dry road. Improved braking performance on wet roads The steep side of the 3D groove makes the edge of the tread block extremely angular. This enables it to cut through the water on the road, much like a windscreen wiper. The direct contact between the tyre and road means exceptionally short braking distances, even in the wet.
ContiPremiumContact 2 Improved resistance to Aquaplaning The special shape of the 3D grooves (shallow and steep sides) means that, as the water flows through, a swirl effect is created. The water is thus dispersed more rapidly and the risk of aquaplaning reduced. The harmonious round shape of the ground contact patch also increases resistance to aquaplaning. Improved handling thanks to ContiPremiumContact 2 s asymmetrical tread pattern The compact outer shoulder and the reduced number of tread blocks ensure optimum road contact and excellent cornering stability. Outer Shoulder The double block structure of the inner ribs ensures high circumferential tread stiffness, which results in improved driving stability and braking performance. Inner Ribs The open inner shoulder with its continuous lateral grooves and an increased number of tread blocks reduces rolling noise and disperses water efficiently, giving a comfortable ride and excellent protection against aquaplaning. ContiPremiumContact 2 The new standard in safety & comfort features many technical innovations. Did you know? In arm wrestling, the stronger partner usually wins. You can, however, gain an advantage if you hold your arm at an angle on the table. This gives you greater stability, making it harder to force your arm away. The shallow sides of the tread grooves on ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres also provide greater stability and support the tread blocks. Creating more contact with the road while reducing braking distances considerably. Did you know? Regardless of whether you`re playing table tennis, football or cricket, if you give a ball the right spin, it travels faster and changes its direction. That is precisely what the innovative 3D grooves do with the water flowing through the tread grooves when the roads are wet. The combination of shallow and steep sides and the change in direction of the lateral grooves accelerate water dispersion, which reduces the risk of aquaplaning. Did you know? Everybody s been there rain beating so hard against the windscreen that you can`t see a thing. The film of water on the road can also lead to dangerous situations, aquaplaning being one of them. The steep groove side on the ContiPremiumContact 2 makes the tread block edge extremely angular. When braking on wet roads, the tyre cuts through the film of water like a windscreen wiper would. The direct contact between the tread and the road surface ensures shorter braking distances, making driving, steering and braking sager!
