August 2010 Dealer Service Instructions for: Customer Satisfaction Notification K16 Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Models 2007-2008 (JS) Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring Convertible and Sedan NOTE: This notification applies only to the above vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission (sales code DFF or DG2) built through March 18, 2008 (MDH 031823). IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this repair on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this repair on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process. Subject The transmission gear shift lever interlock spring retainer hook on about 278,000 of the above vehicles may break. A broken interlock spring retainer hook will result in the inability to move the gear shift lever out of the PARK position. Repair The transmission gear shift lever interlock spring retainer hook must be inspected. Hooks that do not pass the inspection criteria must have a steel reinforcement clip installed. Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 2 Parts Information Part Number CETKK160AA Description Clip, Spring Retainer Hook Reinforcement Each package contains one spring retainer hook reinforcement clip. Each dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were assigned will receive enough Spring Retainer Hook Reinforcement clips to service about 20% of those vehicles. Part Number 68083523AA Description Spring Retainer Hook Reinforcement Package Each package contains the following components: Quantity Description 1 Clip, Spring Retainer Hook Reinforcement (same as CETKK160AA) 1 Spring, Interlock Return NOTE: This package is only required if the shifter hook has already broken, the shift lever is stuck in the PARK position and the interlock spring is missing. Very few vehicles are expected to have this condition. Special Tools No special tools are required to perform this repair.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 3 Service Procedure A. Install Reinforcement Clip (Chrysler Sebring Convertible & Sedan) 1. Apply the park brake and place the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 3. Pull up on the shifter knob and remove it from the shifter lever (Figure 1). 4. Using a trim stick, carefully remove the chrome oval trim ring from the shifter console (Figure 1). 5. Starting at the bottom edge of the HVAC control knob center bezel, use a plastic trim stick to unsnap the bezel (Figure 1) CAUTION: There are molded tabs in the top corners of the center bezel. Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 4 Service Procedure (Continued) 6. Disconnect the electrical connections for the HVAC control knob center bezel and set the bezel aside. THICK HOOK 7. Remove the two console mounting bolts that hold the console to the instrument panel. 8. Remove and save the mat located on the bottom of the console storage bin. RAISED AREA ON SIDE OF HOOK INTERLOCK SPRING Figure 2 Raised Area/Thick Hook 9. Remove the four console mounting bolts located under the mat inside the console storage bin. 10. Disconnect the console electrical connectors. 11. With the park brake fully applied, carefully remove the center console from the vehicle. 12. Inspect the pink plastic interlock hook: If the interlock hook side has a raised (thick) hook (Figure 2), no further action is required. Continue with Step 14 of this procedure. If the interlock hook side is flush (Figure 3), a reinforcement clip must be installed. Continue with Step 13 of this procedure. Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 5 Service Procedure (Continued) 13. Install a spring retainer hook reinforcement clip using the following procedure: a. Place the hook of the reinforcement clip into the loop of the interlock spring while the spring is still attached to the pink interlock hook (Figure 4). b. Rotate the reinforcement clip over the pink interlock hook and snap reinforcement clip into place (Figure 5). SPRING RETAINER HOOK REINFORCEMENT CLIP Figure 4 Install Reinforcement Clip INTERLOCK SPRING CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to install a spring retainer reinforcement clip onto a pink interlock hook that has a raised side (Figure 2). A clip is not required and will not fit. CAUTION: If the pink interlock hook is broke off, the shifter assembly does not require replacement. Install the reinforcement clip. NOTE: If the pink interlock hook is broke off and the interlock spring is missing, use kit 68083523AA. It contains a new interlock spring, along with a spring retainer reinforcement clip. If the spring is not missing, repair kit CETKK160AA can be used along with the original spring. Loosely install the six center console mounting bolts. 16. Tighten the two console-to-instrument panel bolts first. Then tighten the four mounting bolts located in the console storage bin. 17. Install the console storage bin mat. 18. Connect the electrical connections for the console. 19. Connect the electrical connections for the HVAC control knob center bezel 20. Install the HVAC control knob center bezel onto the instrument panel (Figure 1). Be sure to hook the top edge of the bezel first and then snap into place. 21. Install the chrome oval trim ring onto the shifter console (Figure 1). 22. Install the shifter knob onto the shifter lever (Figure 1). 23. Connect the negative battery cable.

Apply the park brake and place the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position. 2. Remove the chrome shifter bezel (Figure 6). 3. Using a plastic trim stick, remove the center console bezel (Figure 6). 4. This will give access to one of the shifter mounting nuts. 6. Remove the four shifter mounting nuts. CAUTION: Use care not to drop the shifter mounting nuts into the console. 7. Lift the shifter and angle it to the right to gain access to inspect the pink plastic interlock hook. INTERLOCK CABLE Figure 7 Interlock Cable GEAR SHIFT CABLE 8. Inspect the pink plastic interlock hook: If the interlock hook side has a raised (thick) hook (Figure 2), no further action is required. Continue with Step 10 of this procedure. If the interlock hook side is flush (Figure 3), a reinforcement clip must be installed. Continue with Step 9 of this procedure 9. Install an spring retainer hook reinforcement clip using the following procedure: a. Place the hook of the reinforcement clip into the loop of the interlock spring while the spring is still attached to the pink interlock hook (Figure 4). b. Rotate the reinforcement clip over the pink interlock hook and snap reinforcement clip into place (Figure 5). CAUTION: Use care not to drop the shifter mounting nuts into the console. 11. Install the interlock cable onto the shifter base (Figure 7). 12. Install the shifter gate onto the shifter (Figure 6). 13. Install the center console bezel (Figure 6). 14. Install the chrome shifter bezel (Figure 6). Completion Reporting and Reimbursement Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the DealerCONNECT Claim Entry Screen located on the Service tab. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record Customer Satisfaction Notification service completions and provide dealer payments. Use one of the following labor operation numbers and time allowances: Labor Operation Time Number Allowance Inspect plastic interlock hook (All Models) 21-K1-61-81 0.2 hours Install spring retainer hook reinforcement clip (Dodge Avenger) 21-K1-61-82 0.4 hours Install spring retainer hook reinforcement clip (Chrysler Sebring) 21-K1-61-83 0.4 hours Optional Equipment Remove center console to inspect (Sebring Only) 21-K1-61-60 0.2 hours Add the cost of the parts package plus applicable dealer allowance to your claim. NOTE: See the Warranty Administration Manual, Recall Claim Processing Section, for complete claim processing instructions.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 10 Dealer Notification To view this notification on DealerCONNECT, select Global Recall System on the Service tab, then click on the description of this notification. Owner Notification and Service Scheduling All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for this service with their dealers. A generic copy of the owner letter is attached. Enclosed with each owner letter is an Owner Notification postcard to allow owners to update our records if applicable. Dealers are encouraged to consider alternative scheduling and servicing approaches for this notification. This repair does not require hoists or other full service facility special equipment and is a Chrysler Mobile Service approved repair.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Interlock Spring Page 11 Vehicle Lists, Global Recall System, VIP and Dealer Follow Up All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall System (GRS) and Vehicle Information Plus (VIP) for dealer inquiry as needed. GRS provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of their incomplete vehicles. The owner s name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim submission. To use this system, click on the Service tab and then click on Global Recall System. Your dealer s VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip code, or VIN sequence. Dealers should perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule appointments for this repair. VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information is permitted for this notification only and is strictly prohibited from all other use. To do this, your dealer willl inspect the gear shift lever interlock spring retainer hook and add a reinforcement clip if required. The work will take about 1/2 hour to complete. We recommend that you make an appointment with your dealer to minimize your inconvenience. Simply contactt your Chrysler, Jeep,, or Dodge dealer, at your convenience, to schedule a service appointment. Your dealer will collect the necessary information to ensure that the appropriate parts are available so your servicee can be completed in a timely manner. Althoughh not required, we recommend bring this letter with you to your dealer when you bring your vehicle in for this service.
