PD Drilling Jar and Energizer JARRING UP To jar up, apply over-pull at the jar as required and wait for jar to fire. The lock will automatically release when lock setting load is exceeded. The intensity of the up jarring force is directly proportional to the applied tension. To repeat jarring, reset jar into locked position by applying weight on the jar which will then automatically return to its locked position and again be ready to fire up or down as required. Jar lock load must be exceeded for the lock to PD (DAH) Double acting hydraulic jar with adjustable integral locking system Knight Oil Tools PD drilling jar and drilling energizer are a new-generation of drilling tools designed and manufactured by Knight Manufacturing LLC, for the severe drilling conditions of today, such as severe directional and horizontal drilling conditions. Whether in vertical, high-angle, or horizontal sections of the well, the PD jar ensures secure and dependable operation while providing high impacts as and when required. Energizer Up & Down Operation The Knight Oil Tools energizer will automatically be applied when operating the drilling jar, PD Placement Notes: Knight Oil Tools PD jar can be placed in the bottom-hole assembly either in tension or compression but it is recommended that the jar is placed as close to any possible stuck point in order to achieve the highest impact where it counts. Ensure that sufficient hammer weight is placed above the jar for high impact. Never place jar or energizer at the neutral point in string as it may cause excessive wear and/or damage to the tools. Never place tools at a transition point (i.e. between 8" (203mm) O.D. and 6 1/2" (165mm) O.D. collars). Never place jar next to or below a stabilizer, roller reamer or similar tool. Drill collars and/or pipe connection O.D. above the jar and immediately (1-2 joints) below the jar should never be larger than the O.D. of the jar. For dual jar and energizer placement, it is recommended that all notes on placement are considered and that the second jar should be placed higher up in the string again with 100,000 lbs 80,000 lbs 60,000 lbs 40,000 lbs 20,000 lbs 0 lbs FORCE CREATED BY PRESSURE DROP ACROSS THE BIT 9 1/2 1000 psi 2000 psi 3000 psi 8 6 1/2 6 1/4 4 3/4 4 1/8 TOOL SIZE (inches) release and hydraulics to be engaged. Over-pull in excess of Max Pre-Jarring should not be applied as it may damage the hydraulics of the jar. thus allowing the driller to fully concentrate on the loads being applied to the jar. The energizer will, when operated with the PD jar, increase acceleration of hammer weight between jar and energizer and thereby increase impacts. The impacts will also, due to the two-stage design, increase impacts in horizontal wells. This double action energizer will also minimize jarring sufficient hammer weight to fire up or down as required. Note: Beware that if weight below the jar is greater than 50% of the UP lock setting, the lock may release and activate jar hydraulics while tripping in hole. The PD jar can be delivered in the open position with a safety clamp to eliminate this problem. JARRING DOWN shock loads on work string and topside equipment. SPECIFICATIONS To jar down, apply weight on the jar as required and wait for jar to fire. The lock will automatically release when lock setting load is exceeded. The intensity of the down jarring force is directly proportional to the applied slack-off weight. To repeat jarring, reset jar into locked position by applying over-pull at the jar which will then automatically return to its locked position and again be ready to fire up or down as required. Jar lock load will have to be exceeded for lock to release and hydraulics to be engaged. PD Shock Tool Features Tool sprung in both directions Metal-to-metal contact when jarring up Hydrostatically balanced Involute spline design is stabilized and will not build angle Internal mechanical safety bearing Tool is fully stress relieved both internally and externally PD Shock Tool Benefits Reduced bit/mill bounce Extended bit/mill life and performance Reduced shock loads transferred through drill string, protecting LWD equipment Increased ROP Extended connection life Lower drilling cost per foot PD Shock Tool Impact and Vibration Reduction Sub The PD shock tool is the new-generation impact tool that incorporates both proven and new technology for superior performance. Using Belleville-style disc springs, a unique dampening system and pump-open force enable the PD shock tool to produce maximum bit performance. During drilling or milling, the tools will normally be run partially compressed, enabling compensation in both up and down directions to ensure that the bit/mill remains on bottom. PD Shock Tool Operation The PD shock tool incorporates a pressure-balancing piston that equalizes pressure inside the tool with the pressure inside the drill string. Because of this, the pressure drop across the bit will tend to extend the tool. The amount will depend on a balance between Weight On Bit (WOB) and pump-open force. If the hydraulic force extending the impact tool is greater than WOB, the tool will open, compressing the spring assembly from the lower end until the tool reaches a balance. If the pump-open force is less than WOB, the tool will close, compressing the spring assembly from the upper end until the tool reaches a balance. Jarring with the PD Shock Tool The PD shock tool is sprung in both directions but when jarring is necessary, over-pulling the tool will bring the split bushing in contact with the pin on the splined housing. This causes the tool to act as an integral part of the drill string, eliminating any adverse reaction from the spring system while jarring.
