INSTALL AND USE THIS PRODUCT AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THESE TERMS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THIS PRODUCT. THIS PRODUCT IS DESIGNED TO BE INSTALLED BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY. IMPROPER INSTALLATION CAN RESULT IN IRREVERSABLE DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE. IT IS THE INSTALLERS RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY ALL WIRES PRIOR TO MAKING ANY CONNECTIONS. INSTALLATION: Mount the control module in a convenient interior location that is free of heat sources and moving parts and route wires accordingly. In most vehicles the best location is under either the driver s side or passenger side dashboard. While wiring the module it is recommended that he control box be unplugged from the harness. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS: Due to the harsh environment found in vehicles, KP Technologies recommends always soldering and securely taping EVERY connection. 1. YELLOW 12VDC SWITCHED IGNITION a. Connect this wire to a source that reads 12 volts when the ignition switch is in both the on and crank positions. On some vehicles you can use the ignition feed as long as the ignition feed is powered even if the car isn t running. 2. PURPLE THROTTLE POSITION INPUT a. Connect this wire to the vehicles Throttle Position Sensor or Accelerator Pedal Position signal. This signal must read close to 0vdc with the accelerator pedal is not pushed down at all and at least 2.5vdc when the pedal is pushed all the way down. 3. WHITE (-) RELAY COIL OUTPUT a. Connect this wire to the white wire (Pin 85) on the supplied KPtechnologies hybrid relay. 4. BROWN (-) TRANSISTOR BASE OUTPUT a. Connect this wire to the brown wire (transistor) on the supplied KPtechnologies hybrid relay.
5. ORANGE CLUTCH STATUS INPUT a. Connect this wire to a clutch switch that triggers as soon as the clutch is pressed (Switches that switch at the bottom of travel will not work). If no clutch switch is available then one will need to be added. The clutch switch can read 12vdc in either the up or down position. If the clutch switch does not have a 12vdc output an additional relay may need to be added - please contact KPtechnologies for more information. 6. BLUE FUEL INJECTOR SIGNAL a. Connect this wire to the vehicles #1 fuel injector trigger signal. This signal will pulse one time for every two motor revolutions and can be verified with a frequency meter. At idle the fuel injector should pulse in the area of 9 11 Hz. This frequency should increase as the motor RPM rises. 7. BLACK GROUND a. KPtechnologies recommends to connect this wire to a chassis ground. HYBRID RELAY WIRING (SEE FIGURE 1): This KPtechnologies module utilizes a custom engineered hybrid relay that mixes the reliability, high current capacity, and superior isolation properties of a standard electromechanical Bosch style automotive relay with the speed and precision of a solid state transistor device. When the Two Step feature is activated the electromechanical relay cuts all power to the ignition coils and/or fuel injectors. The transistor is then used to turn on spark and/or fuel as needed for individual cylinders each revolution. The Speed Shift feature is accomplished by only using the electromechanical relay. The hybrid relay has seven wires on it. Four of the wires go directly to the electromechanical relays socket and the other three wires go to the solid state device mounted to the metal tab of the electromechanical relay: 1. Relay Pin 85 (White) - (-) Relay coil input a. Connect this wire to the white wire coming from the KPtechnologies control module 2. Relay Pin 86 (Red) (+) Relay coil input a. Connect this wire to a switched voltage source. This wire can be connected to the KPtechnologies control module power wire (yellow). 3. Relay Pin 30 (Black) Relay switch output a. Power to coils/fuel injectors (connect to supplied twisted gray wire) 4. Relay Pin 87A (Blue)- Relay normally closed switch input a. Power from battery (connect to supplied twisted yellow wire)
5. Transistor Blue Solid State Device switch input a. Power from battery (connect to supplied twisted yellow wire) 6. Transistor Brown Solid State Device trigger input a. Connect this wire to the brown wire coming from the KPtechnologies control module 7. Transistor Black Solid State Device switch output a. Power to coils/fuel injectors (connect to supplied twisted gray wire) Start by connecting the blue wire from the relay (Pin 87A), the red wire from the relay (Pin 86), and the blue wire connected to the transistor together. Next, connect the black wire from the relay (Pin 30) to the black wire of the transistor. Then connect the white wire from the relay (Pin 85) to the white wire on the control module and connect the Transistor Brown wire to the brown wire on the control module. Locate the supplied length of twisted gray and yellow wire and route it from the module installation location through the firewall and in to the engine compartment, avoiding all moving engine components and heat sources. Find the common 12vdc power source that powers the ignition coils / fuel injectors and cut this wire. Connect the battery side of the cut wire to the twisted yellow wire. Connect the ignition coil / fuel injector side to the twisted gray wire. Back at the KPtechnologies control module connect the twisted yellow wire to the relay blue, relay red, and transistor blue wires. Connect the twisted gray wire to relay black and transistor black wires. When mounting the hybrid relay do NOT allow the metal mounting tab to touch ground as it will short the ignition system out. INITIALIZATION: This unit must be initialized before it will function correctly. To initialize the unit press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and turn the ignition to the ON position. Do NOT start the car. With the pedal down and the ignition powered wait ten seconds. After ten seconds the module will click one time. **** If the unit does not click after 10 seconds verify that there is 12vdc between the KPtechnologies yellow (+) and black (-) wires and verify that the throttle position voltage is greater then 2.5vdc on the KPtechnologies purple wire. If these items check correctly verify that the relay is wired correctly (most importantly pins 85 and 86). Completely release the accelerator pedal and immediately press it all the way back down. The module will now emit a series of clicks. The number of clicks represents how many cylinders the module is programmed to work with (the default is 6). To change this setting quickly press and release the clutch pedal. Each time the clutch is pressed and released the module will emit a series of clicks that represents the current selection - either 4, 6, or 8 clicks. Once the correct number of cylinders is selected release the accelerator pedal. The module will emit several quick clicks to indicate that the initialization process has been finished. PROGRAMMING: To program the Two Step RPM push both the clutch and the accelerator pedal to the floor. Turn the ignition to the ON position but do not start the car. Within 10 seconds release the accelerator pedal the module should click one time at this point to indicate programming mode has been entered. Next, with the clutch still held to the floor, start the car. Rev the motor to the desired two step RPM, hold it for a brief moment, and then release the clutch. If everything is connected correctly and the RPM setpoint was accepted the module will emit a click and the motor will briefly hesitate. To program the Speed Shift time delay turn the dial on the top of the module. All the way counter clockwise turns the Speed Shift feature off. Moving it clockwise adjusts the time between ~25mS and ~500mS. It is recommended to start closer to 500mS and slowly turn the knob down as needed. OPERATION: To engage the Two Step press and hold the clutch down and then press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor. The module will emit one short click and then should maintain the preset RPM. To trigger the Speed Shift the accelerator pedal must be pushed all the way down and then the clutch pedal must be pushed in. The module will cut the ignition power for the preprogrammed amount of time.
