Nissan Ireland Cedar House Park West Business Park Nangor Road, Dublin 12 Product Campaign Bulletin REFERENCE: MODEL: PIB-NES-EC-14-009 J11 Qashqai SUBJECT: PIB J11 - P1655 and P1656 Stop - Start System 1) DESCRIPTION Customer may complain of the stop start system not working correctly. 2) BACKGROUND If the customer has concerns related to Start / Stop system not working it is very important that the conditions for Start / Stop to be working are first confirmed to be being met. These are available in the Owner s Manual and an ESM extract shown below. There have been several J11 Bypass and Bypass control Relays replaced for Start / Stop concerns where DTC s P1655 & P1656 have been diagnosed with Consult III+. These relays which are sent for supplier investigation have no fault and on some occasion the incorrect relay has been replaced. Under certain Consult III+ test conditions DTC s to appear during diagnosis by mistake if the hood is open during active test please refer to below. 3) VEHICLES AFFECTED This applies to all J11 with Start / Stop systems 4) SERVICE PROCEDURE If a customer complains about Start / Stop not working then please confirm: A. Confirm if the Stop/Start System symbol at the bottom of the display flashes in the combimeter (see photo - right) If this is not displayed then please confirm that the customer driving conditions meet the requirements for the Start/Stop system to work - refer to the owners manual. (an extract of this can be found below)
J11 Owners Manual Extract Ensure the customer is fulfilling the conditions The Stop/Start System will NOT activate under the following conditions: When the engine is kept idling without any driving after the engine is turned on. When the engine coolant temperature is low. When the battery capacity is low. When the battery temperature is low or extremely high. When the vehicle is moved. When the vacuum in the brake servo decreases. When the engine bonnet is opened with the engine running. When the engine is turned on with the engine bonnet open. When the driver s seat belt is not fastened. When the driver s door is open. When the steering wheel is operated. When the Stop/Start System indicator blinks at a low speed. When the accelerator pedal is depressed (XTRONIC transmission models). When the shift lever is in the R (Reverse) position. When the fan speed control dial is in any position other than OFF (0) while the air flow control dial is in the front defogger position (manual air conditioner). When the front defogger switch is on (automatic air conditioner). When the Stop/Start System OFF switch is turned on. When the electric power steering warning light, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning light, or the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) warning light illuminates. When the brake pedal is not fully depressed (XTRONIC transmission models). When stopping the vehicle on steep sloping roads (XTRONIC transmission models). When the power consumption is large. When the vehicle is travelling at altitudes higher than 2000m (6562 ft) (MT models). When the vehicle is travelling at altitudes higher than 1500m (4922 ft) (R9M engine in combination with XTRONIC transmission models). NOTE It may take some time until the Stop/Start System activates under the following conditions: When the battery is discharged. When the outside temperature is low. When the battery is replaced or the battery terminal is disconnected for extended periods and then reconnected. NOTE The engine will not restart even if the brake pedal is released (XTRONIC transmission) or clutch pedal is pressed (MT) while the Stop/Start System is activated under the following condition: When the shift lever is in the P (Park) position (XTRONIC transmission models). When the engine bonnet is opened. When the driver seat belt is unfastened and the driver s door is opened (MT models). When the gear shift lever is not in the Neutral position. (MT models)
NOTE The engine will restart without releasing the brake pedal (XTRONIC transmission models) or without depressing the clutch pedal (MT models) while the Stop/Start System is activated under the following conditions: When the Stop/Start System OFF switch is pushed. When the fan speed control dial is in any position other than OFF (0) while the air flow control dial is in the front defogger position (manual air conditioner). When the front defogger switch is set to ON (automatic air conditioner). When the accelerator pedal is depressed. (XTRONIC transmission models) When the steering wheel is operated. (XTRONIC transmission models) When the battery capacity is low. When the power consumption is large. When the brake pedal is released on sloping roads and the vehicle is moved. When the force to the brake pedal is reduced while the shift lever is in the D (Drive) or N (Neutral) position. (XTRONIC transmission models) When the shift lever is placed in the L (Low), D (Drive) or R (Reverse) position from the N or P position. (XTRONIC transmission models) When the vacuum of the brake servo is insufficient as a result of depressing the brake pedal several times. When the driver s seat belt is released or the driver s door is open. (XTRONIC transmission models) B. A more detailed level of conditions can be found in the ESM (an extract of this can be found below in APPENDIX B please refer to the online documents for latest information) C. If the the Stop/Start System symbol at the bottom of the display flashes in the combimeter (as below) then please continue to follow the steps below: D. Check Battery condition is OK using battery tester EXP1625 E. Check for DTC s using Consult 3+ F. If DTC s P1655 or P1656 then follow below. For any other DTC s follow the specific ESM procedure. G. For DTC s P1655 or P1656 clear the DTC s and then check the operation of the Start / Stop system using Consult III+ Active Test but with the Hood Closed before first starting the engine.
IMPORTANT: J11 Start / Stop system diagnosis using Active Test in Consult III+ with the Hood Open will cause the DTC s P1656 & P1655 to appear as a Current fault. This is leading to misdiagnosis and replacement of the Bypass and Bypass control relays unnecessarily. DIAGNOSIS USING CONSULT III+ START / STOP ACTIVE TEST SHOULD ONLY BE MADE WITH THE HOOD CLOSED BEFORE FIRST STARTING THE ENGINE With CONSULT III+ 1. Ensure the Hood is closed 2. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. 3. Press start/stop OFF switch and check that the switch indicator is ON. 4. Select AUTO STOP START in ACTIVE TEST mode of ENGINE using CONSULT. 5. Touch START and operate stop/start system. (engine stop.) 6. Touch CANCEL and restart the engine. 7. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 twice. 8. If no DTC s reoccur inspection END otherwise continue as below. H. If P1655 or P1656 Reoccurs follow the ESM diagnosis procedure to confirm the root cause: 1.CHECK FUSE 1. Turn ignition switch OFF. 2. Check that the following fuse is not fusing. Location Fuse No. Capacity Fuse block (J/B) 7 3. Is the fuse fusing? 20 A YES>>Replace the fuse after repairing the applicable circuit. NO>>GO TO 2.
2. CHECK ENGINE RESTART BYPASS CONTROL RELAY POWER SUPPLY 1. Turn ignition switch OFF. 2. Remove engine restart bypass control relay. PLEASE NOTE THIS RELAY IS CALLED THE ICR RELAY IT IS NOT THE RESTART RELAY The part number of the Relay is 25230 9F920 NOT 25230 79942 The location of this relay with the relay box is as below: 3. Turn ignition switch ON. 4. Check the voltage between engine restart bypass control relay harness connector and ground. (PLEASE REFER TO ESM FOR CONNECTIONS ON SPECIFIC J11 VARIANT) + Engine restart bypass control relay Voltage Connector F98 Terminal 1 5 Ground Battery voltage Is the inspection result normal? YES>>GO TO 3. NO>>Perform the trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
3.CHECK ENGINE RESTART BYPASS CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT-1 1. Turn ignition switch OFF. 2. Disconnect ECM harness connector. 3. Check the continuity between engine restart bypass control relay harness connector and ECM harness connector. (PLEASE REFER TO ESM FOR CONNECTIONS ON SPECIFIC J11 VARIANT) + Engine restart bypass control relay ECM Connector Terminal Connector Terminal Continuity F98 2 F80 55 Existed 4. Also check harness for short to ground and to power. Is the inspection result normal? YES>>GO TO 4. NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts. 4.CHECK ENGINE RESTART BYPASS CONTROL RELAY CIRCUIT-2 1. Disconnect engine restart bypass relay harness connector. 2. Check the continuity between engine restart bypass control relay harness connector and engine restart bypass relay harness connector. Remove engine restart bypass control relay.
3. Check continuity between engine restart bypass control relay terminals as per the following condition. YES>>GO TO 6. NO>>Replace error-detected parts. 6.CHECK ENGINE RESTART BYPASS RELAY Check the engine restart bypass relay. Refer to Component Inspection (Engine Restart Bypass Relay). Is the inspection result normal? YES>>Check intermittent incident. Refer to Intermittent Incident. NO>>Replace error-detected parts. 5) PARTS None required 6) CLAIMING CONDITIONS None required
APPENDIX B (Refer to online documents for latest information) ESM Extract example for Manual Transmission: FUNCTION DESCRIPTION When the stop/start system readiness conditions are satisfied while the vehicle is moving, the system is ready. When the stop/start system operation conditions are satisfied while the vehicle is in a stop condition, the engine is stopped. During stop/start system operation, stopping time, the amount of fuel saved by the stop/start system and CO2 saved information are indicated on the combination meter. When the engine restart conditions are satisfied, ECM activates the engine restart relay, the engine restart bypass control relay, and the engine restart bypass relay to restart the engine. And the DC/DC converter boosts the voltage during cranking to protect the electrical equipment from low voltage. After restarting the engine, the stop/start indicator lamp and the indication on the information display turn OFF. And the combination meter turns ON a stop/start indicator lamp.
