The Center for Sustainable Tourism is proud to present our Renewable Energy and Tourism Webinar Tuesday, September 10 th 10:00am 11:00am EST Eliminating your Emissions: Carbon Offset Opportunities through NC GreenPower

The Center for Sustainable Tourism at East Carolina University is an interdisciplinary research center comprised of many diverse university academic and non-academic units. The goals of the Center are to promote and support the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the tourism industry whether business, government or individual traveler behaviors. This is done through graduate level education, academic research, and community and industry and outreach.

Session 1: Introduction to Carbon Offsets Featuring Guest Expert Ms. Tanja Vujic, Director of Duke University s Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative (DCOI). Session 2: NC GreenPower Featuring Guest Expert Ms. Katie Shepherd, Marketing and Communications Manager for NC GreenPower

The Center for Sustainable Tourism Renewable Energy and Tourism Webinar Case Study Ms. Tanja Vujic, Director of Duke University s Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative

Basics of Carbon Offset Projects Presentation for the Center for Sustainable Tourism Webinar Tanja Vujic Director Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative September 10, 2013

Carbon Offset Basics 1. What are carbon offsets? 2. How do you know you have a carbon offset? 3. Why should companies care about reducing their emissions footprint? 4. Example Offset Project

Greenhouse Gas Emissions that Lead to Climate Change U.S. Emissions of GHGs Total Emissions in 2010 6,822 Million Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalents (MTCO 2 e) THE DUKE CARBON OFFSETS INITIATIVE

What are Offsets? A project or activity undertaken to reduce GHGs that another entity uses to mitigate emissions it can t avoid Undertaken off-site or outside the emissions footprint Measured in metric tons CO 2 equivalents Additional, Real, Measurable, Verifiable, Clearly Owned, Permanent (or account for lack of permanence), and have no negative environmental or social co-effects*

Livestock Methane as Carbon Offset

Types of Offset Transactions Voluntary Companies, non-profit entities and/or individuals who make voluntary commitments to reduce or neutralize their carbon emissions Offsets available from third-party vendors, e.g., NC GreenPower Duke University; Google Regulatory/Compliance Market created by a legal mandate that requires capped entities to reduce emissions, which they can (1) Do on their own, (2) Purchase from another entity capable of reducing emissions, or (3) Purchase from an entity within a non-capped sector, e.g., agriculture, landfills, forestry Many regulated entities purchase or develop projects that are not otherwise available to the public California s Cap-and-Trade Market; 4 project types currently recognized (livestock methane, forestry, urban forestry, ozone depleting substances)

Climate Change Impacts & Responses More carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere affects our climate, which could result in higher temperatures, more and increasingly severe storms, and longer droughts. Broad impacts of climate change include: Human health Infrastructure Transportation Systems Energy Food Water Supplies* Climate Change particularly affects: Coastal, Drought and Flood-Prone Areas (including vacation destinations) Budgets/Purchasing Decisions - Response to the effects of climate change comes at a cost, including increased cooling costs, repairs after severe storms and potential increases in insurance premiums. At the same time, some consumers respond favorably to products and services that mitigate their effect on climate and companies that offer climate-mitigating products and services, like offsets, can help to change behavior. *See, generally, U.S. EPA Climate Change Website, available at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/impacts-adaptation.

Community Benefits of Offsets #1 Mitigates Effects of Climate Change #2 Way to pursue other community goals, such as energy efficiency or community outreach #3 Other health, environmental and social benefits, including renewable energy #4 Raises the stature of your community and attracts customers #5 - Revenue, Innovation & Public-Private Partnerships

Livestock Methane via Swine Waste-to-Energy Duke U Farmer - Duke Energy Google Partnership Installation of a combined innovative animal waste management & electricity generation system on an 8,600-head finishing farm Yadkin County, NC Meets all NC Environmental Performance Standards 5,000± Carbon Offsets, registered with CAR 500± Renewable Energy Certificates Electricity THE DUKE CARBON OFFSETS INITIATIVE

What Is A Carbon Footprint? The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities within a given time frame, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide. Driving, flying, recreation Heating your home with natural gas/propane Anything you purchase has a footprint Copyright 2013, NC GreenPower Corporation. All rights reserved.

What Is A Carbon Footprint? How much CO 2 do I add with my activities? 1 Gallon = 20 lbs CO2 100W x 100 hrs = 20 lbs CO2 RDU>JFK = 1,000 lbs CO2 2.5 million lbs CO2/yr in U.S. 352 lbs CO2 annually Average use = 11 lbs CO2/yr 6.5 lbs CO2 Copyright 2013, NC GreenPower Corporation.
