Item #15357 METAL BLACKENING SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS

The Eastwood Metal Blackening System replicates the factory Black Oxide coating found on many automotive bolts and fasteners as well as numerous small parts. The cured coating is resistant to most automotive fluids, solvents, fuels, acids and even DOT 3 Brake Fluid. In addition to offering up to 600 F [315 C] of heat resistance, it is highly abrasion resistant and will fully seal any surface from moisture, oxygen and the damaging effects of corrosion. Important Product Notes: Eastwood Metal Blackening is a two-component formulation requiring a precise 12:1 mix ratio of 12 parts of A, Black Oxide and 1 part of B, Activator. The surface to be coated with Eastwood Metal Blackening must be thoroughly cleaned and completely free of any rust, oily deposits, polishes or any type of surface contaminates. Failure to do so will diminish the products ability to offer full adhesion and protection. Once mixed, Eastwood Metal Blackening has a pot life of 6 to 8 hours. Beyond that time, it begins to cure and is no longer usable. SAFETY INFORMATION READ INSTRUCTIONS! Thoroughly read and understand this instruction manual before use. Save manual for future reference to safety warnings, maintenance and operating procedures. Failure to follow all warnings can result in tool damage or serious physical injury. HEALTH HAZARD! Wear appropriate eye protection to avoid the possibility of any product splashing into eyes. Wear protective, chemical resistant gloves. Disposable Nitrile or latex gloves are acceptable. Avoid breathing vapors produced by Metal Blackening. Always wear appropriate NIOSH approved breathing apparatus and use in a well ventilated area. 2 Eastwood Technical Assistance: 800.544.5118 >> techelp@eastwood.com

FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARD! Do Not use near sparks, open flame or other potential ignition source. SURFACE PREPARATION All bare metal surfaces must be free of all grease, oily residue or other contaminates. Rinse the surface several times using the included Surface Prep cleaner or Eastwood #10041Z PRE, pre-painting prep or a good quality acetone with a lint-free wipe. Metal surfaces with light corrosion or oxidation should be thoroughly cleaned of any oxidation or corrosion by abrasive blasting, abrasive wheel or sanding. For mild to moderate rust, use Eastwood #19415ZP Fast-Etch. Rinse the surface several times using the included Surface Prep cleaner or Eastwood #10041Z PRE, pre-painting prep or a good quality acetone with a lint-free wipe. All non-bare metal surfaces such as cured paint, fiberglass gel coat, powder coating, Plexiglas, etc. must be free of all wax, silicone, oil or other contaminates. Rinse the surface several times using the included Surface Prep cleaner or Eastwood #10041Z PRE, pre-painting prep or a good quality acetone with a lint-free wipe. PRODUCT MIXING 1. Carefully measure and mix a ratio of 12 parts of Part A, Black Oxide with 1 part of Part B, Activator into a clean, lidded plastic or glass paint mixing cup. Note: The entire contents of Part A and Part B may be mixed together at one time if desired as the containers are presized to provide the correct 12:1 mixing ratio. 2. Stir mixture thoroughly for 3 full minutes. 3. The mixed Eastwood Metal Blackening is ready for use. NOTE: The Eastwood Metal Blackening mixture has a limited pot life of 6 to 8 hours. 4. If mixture begins to cure, do not use. To order parts and supplies: 800.345.1178 >> eastwood.com 3

PRODUCT APPLICATION Eastwood Metal Blackening can be applied by multiple methods including: brushing, airbrush, detail gun or included Preval sprayer. BRUSH ON: 1. Follow all surface prep and product mixing instruction steps outlined previously. 2. Be sure to wear protective gloves, eye protection and respiratory apparatus as described in safety instructions. 3. A good quality disposable foam brush works best for smooth, even product application. 4. Carefully dip foam brush into mixed Eastwood Metal Blackening, then spread onto surface using smooth, uninterrupted strokes. 5. This product is designed to go on in several thin coats which are much more effective than a single thicker application. To apply additional coats, wait a minimum of 5 minutes between coats. 2 coats are recommended. AIRBRUSH OR DETAIL GUN APPLICATION (PREFERRED METHOD): 1. Follow all surface prep and product mixing instruction steps outlined previously. 2. Be sure to wear protective gloves, eye protection and respiratory apparatus as described in safety instructions. 3. Use a gravity-feed detail gun or airbrush with a 0.3 to 0.5 mm needle/nozzle set and mist on the first coat of Eastwood Metal Blackening. 4. This product is designed to go on in several thin coats which are much more effective than a single thicker application. To apply additional coats, wait a minimum of 5 minutes between coats. 2 coats are recommended. 5. Do not allow the product to cure in the spray gun or permanent damage will occur. The gun must be cleaned thoroughly with Surface Prep cleaner, Eastwood Aerosol Injected Cleaner #12846Z, acetone or lacquer thinner. 4 Eastwood Technical Assistance: 800.544.5118 >> techelp@eastwood.com

PREVAL APPLICATION (INCLUDED): 1. Follow all surface prep and product mixing instruction steps outlined previously. 2. Be sure to wear protective gloves, eye protection and respiratory apparatus as described in safety instructions. 3. Pour Eastwood Metal Blackening mixture into Glass Jar Important Note: The Preval unit is designed to operate with a minimum of 2 fluid ounces in the jar. It may be necessary to mix the full amount of Part A and Part B which will yield approx. 4 oz. 4. Do not shake or tilt the Preval Sprayer more than 45 or product can leak out of the vent hole located in the bottom of the Preval Power Unit. 5. This product is designed to go on in several thin coats which are much more effective than a single thicker application. To apply additional coats, wait a minimum of 5 minutes between coats. 2 coats are recommended. 6. Do not allow the product to cure in the Preval Sprayer or permanent damage will occur. The Sprayer head and pickup tube must be cleaned thoroughly with Surface Prep cleaner, Eastwood Aerosol Injected Cleaner #12846Z, acetone or lacquer thinner. PRODUCT CURING Eastwood Metal Blackening is a 2 component, catalyzed system and will cure by chemical reaction. In normal conditions, it will dry to touch in 24 hours and coated components can be assembled. Allow 3 to 4 weeks for full cure. After full cure, the coating will be resistant to chips, scratches, chemicals and corrosion. To order parts and supplies: 800.345.1178 >> eastwood.com 5
