TO THE OWNER This manual is designed to help ensure safe and efficient operation of the HEIL Durapack Python refuse collection vehicle. The manual will familiarize you with the unit, and give operating procedures and tips. For truck operation and maintenance instructions, see Truck Owner s Manual. We at HEIL take pride in the units we manufacture. We trust you will be well satisfied with your purchase. Properly operated and maintained, the Durapack Python should give years of low-cost, trouble free service. WARRANTY CLAIMS and INQUIRIES The HEIL Warranty is included in the back of this manual. Should a warranty failure occur on equipment purchased from HEIL or a distributor, contact the distributor for warranty repair. All warranty repairs are to be done by the distributor or service center. For all parts, claims or inquiries, refer to the model and serial number on the serial plate. DIRECTIONAL REFERENCE Sides of the unit are determined by facing in the direction of forward travel. The right side is the Curbside and the left side is the Streetside This is the right or curbside of unit as shown. 1.4

HEIL requires a battery disconnect switch on all vehicles mounted with HEIL refuse equipment. Contact your HEIL Distributor or HEIL directly if vehicle is not so equipped. Do not use windshield guard as a ladder for access to top of cab. Personal injury or windshield damage may occur. 1.11

COLD WEATHER WARM-UP PROCEDURE When air temperatures are cold, it may be necessary to warm up the unit hydraulic oil, before going on daily route operation. Follow these steps. 1. Turn on truck and let the engine idle. 2. Set the unit parking brake and make sure it is holding. 3. Engage the hydraulic pump for approximately 5 minutes. 4. Be sure area around unit is clear of all people and objects, before actuating controls. 5. Operate the unit functions (lift and body) through 10 cycles to warm up oil. 6. Unit is now ready to go on route. 1.17

BEFORE OPERATING - DAILY UNIT INSPECTION Every day before starting your unit, have a walk-around inspection to check the following: 1. Make sure all safety decals are in place and readable. Replace any damaged or missing decals. Refer to decal placement chart. 2. Check side door to be sure it is closed and latched. 3. Check for fluid leaks from hose fittings, cylinders, valves and pumps. Check for worn or damaged hoses. 4. Inspect body mounting brackets for cracked welds, loose bolts or movement. Do not operate a unit with loose bolts or damaged mounting brackets. 5. Check body for any worn parts or visible welds for cracks. 6. Check function of back-up alarm and light. 7. A. Check throttle advance/limit for proper operation and functions. B. Check starter interlock to make sure truck will not start in gear and check neutral interlock to make sure throttle advance functions only in neutral. 8. Check unit for loose or missing bolts. 9. Check hydraulic oil fluid level to be sure it is full. Add recommended oil if necessary. 10. Check chassis tires for condition and pressures. Check engine oil, water and transmission levels. Close air tank drain valve. With parking brake on, turn on battery disconnect switch and start engine. 11. Check all lights for functioning. Immediately replace any burned out or missing bulbs. Check any wiring and battery cables from battery box to engine starter for any loose cables, rubbing or damaged insulation.. Be sure Battery Disconnect Switch is turned off when truck is not in operation. 12. With all individuals and any hazards clear of the area, A. Operate the controls to be sure all body, packer and tailgate functions are operating properly. B. Unlatch and raise tailgate slightly to be sure alarm is sounding. Close tailgate and make sure it s sealed and latched. DO NOT operate a unit that is in need of service or repair. A part failure during operation can cause damage to unit, personal injury or death! 2.2

HYDRAULIC OIL TANK The oil tank should be fill to the level as indicated on the sight gauge or between the two lines of the oil level decal. Oil level should be checked with the unit in the following position. 1. Truck on level ground. 2. Packing Panel forward up against the hopper front. 3. Lift in the In-Transit position with all cylinders retracted. 4. Tailgate fully down and locked. SIGHT GAUGE AND OIL LEVEL DECAL 2.3

The following oils by brand name are approved for use in the hydraulic system on this equipment and considered to be all temperature hydraulic fluids. Pennzoil Pennzbell AWX MV 32 Mobil DTE 13M Shell Tellus T 32 Texaco Rando HDZ 32 NOTE: Cold weather operation requires special oil considerations. Viscosity should not exceed 7500 SSU at lowest startup temperature. Continuous operation should range between 40-1000 SSU for all temperature ranges. Hydraulic Oil Recommendation. LOCK-OUT/TAGOUT PROCEDURES Anytime the unit needs to be serviced or repaired, a lockout tag needs to be hung from the steering wheel before starting. Follow the procedure below. 1. Turn off engine and set the brakes, making sure the brakes are holding and working properly. 2. Chock all wheels. 3. Remove ignition key from the cab 4. Place a lock-out tag on the steering wheel. NOTE: Lock-out tags may be ordered from parts central (212-1586). 2.4

SIDE ACCESS DOOR A hinged access door is located on the streetside of the unit and provides access to the body area for cleanout purposes. It should never be entered unless the truck engine is stopped and the ignition key removed and unit is in lockout/tagout position. SIDE DOOR 2.5

BODY SUMP DOOR A sump door is located on the front corner on each side of the body and needs to be open when cleaning out the sump area. A cleaning tool is provided with each unit to clean out the sump area. Doors should be closed at all times except when open for cleaning. SUMP DOOR 2.6

BODY PROPS Body props are supplied with the unit and located on both sides under the body and forward of the rear wheels. Refer to section 4 for proper body raise procedures. NOTE: EMPTY BODY OF ALL REFUSE BEFORE USING BODY PROPS. A. To lower props partially raise the body, remove the handle from chain located on left hand (streetside) of the unit and rotate the interconnected body props down. Lower the body so props mate with their rest points and all load is removed from the body raise cylinders, see figure below. B. To store props partially raise the body, return props to transit position and re-install handle in chain. 2.6.1

ALTERNATE BODY BLOCKING In the event the body is in a position in which the factory props CANNOT be used, an alternative method of blocking is shown in the figure below. Be sure timbers are securely braced against the body crossmembers. IF PROPER EQUIPMENT IS NOT AVAILABLE OR IF YOU ARE INEXPERIENCED IN PERFORMING THE ABOVE, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOWER THE BODY OR ATTEMPT REPAIRS. IN EITHER CASE, GET EXPERIENCED HELP AND PROPER EQUIPMENT BEFORE PROCEEDING. LOWERING A RAISED BODY WHEN THE IN-CAB OPERATING CONTROLS BECOME INOPERATIVE OR IF RAISED BODY WILL NOT LOWER FOR ANY OTHER REASON. IMPORTANT! Body Props must be in lowered position before starting this procedure! 1. Make sure all persons are cleared at least 30 away from the vehicle to avoid potential injury or death while performing the following steps, unless otherwise indicated herein. 2. Set vehicle parking brake and chock or block wheels securely so the vehicle cannot move. 3. Either allow the load to finish dumping, or if part of the load is stuck in the body, use a backhoe or front end loader to remove balance of the load. NOTE! USE EXTREME CAUTION NOT TO OVERTURN VEHICLE. 4. Block the raised body with two (2) 6 x 6 timbers of sufficient length or railroad ties as shown to support the body (and load if unable to remove load). 5. Connect a chain or chain sling to an overhead crane, truck crane or other lifting device having adequate capacity to safely hold and lower the body and load. 6. Attach the chain or cable device with hooks, all of adequate lift rating, to the body rubrail just behind the front crossmember as shown. Snug up the tension on the sling with the crane, without relieving the pressure from the body supporting timbers. 7. With the chocking and timber blocking still in place, from a position on the ground, under the chassis frame, shift the control valve, at the valve location into the lower position. If the valve is spring centered, wire or lock the valve in the lower position. 8. To prevent injury or death, move out from under the truck chassis and clear all people from the area where the raised body could potentially overturn. Use the crane mechanism to slightly raise the body to relieve the pressure from the body supporting timbers. Be sure the crane lifting device is securely attached to the body and both the crane and body are stable before removing the body supporting timbers. 2.6.3

Remove body supporting timbers, being sure not to place your body or limb between the unit body and chassis frame. 9. Using the crane, slowly lower the body in a controlled manner until it is resting on the chassis frame. 10. Proceed to perform the repairs and/or replacement necessary to correct the control mechanism failure, or other malfunction, by qualified and trained personnel, such as your authorized Heil distributor. IF PROPER EQUIPMENT IS NOT AVAILABLE OR IF YOU ARE INEXPERIENCED IN PERFORMING THE ABOVE, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOWER THE BODY OR ATTEMPT REPAIRS. IN EITHER CASE, GET EXPERIENCED HELP AND PROPER EQUIPMENT BEFORE PROCEEDING. TAILGATE SUPPORT PROPS Two support props are on the units and must be used whenever the tailgate is opened for service or maintenance. Both props must be used. 1. Be sure unit is on flat stable ground and apply parking brake. 2. Raise tailgate enough to unlatch and rotate the props so they fit into the prop pocket on each side of the tailgate. Slowly lower tailgate until prop is fully inserted into the pockets. 3. Turn off engine and remove ignition key and place the unit in a lockout/tagout position. 4. When completed with use of props, reverse steps to place props in a stored position. 2.7

SERVICE HOIST RAISE/LOWER OPERATION Before attempting to raise and lower the body, be sure the unit is; 1. On firm level surface and the Parking Brake is engaged and holding. NOTE: EMPTY BODY OF ALL REFUSE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO RAISE BODY AND USE BODY PROPS. WARNING: BE SURE THE AREA AROUND THE UNIT IS CLEAR OF ALL PEOPLE! A. RAISING THE BODY 2. The service hoist controls are located on the streetside of the unit. 3. Stay clear of body and press and hold the raise button to raise the body fully. NOTE: RELEASING THE BUTTON WILL STOP THE BODY RAISING. RAISE BUTTON LOWER BUTTON 2.8

SERVICE HOIST 4. Unhook prop handle and lower the service hoist body prop. This is done on the streetside of the unit. NOTE: RELEASING THE BUTTON WILL STOP THE BODY LOWERING. 5. Lower body to mate with chassis bracket by pressing and holding the lower button on service hoist control. A. LOWERING THE BODY 1. Raise the body slightly using the raise button. 2. Raise and store the body prop. 3. Stay clear of body and press and hold the lower button to fully lower the body. 2.9

TRAVELING OR IN-TRANSIT POSITION When traveling to and from landfill or back to route, be sure unit is the the traveling or In-Transit position as follows; A. Tailgate down and locked. B. PTO or Pump Switch is OFF. C. Lift Lift and Reach cylinders in retracted position and grabbers open and tight against the chassis. D. Packer Panel; Empty unit at the front of the hopper. Full unit up tight against refuse E. Mirrors are properly adjusted. F. Lights are all functioning. G. Side Access Door is closed and latched. H. Sump Door is closed and latched I. Streetside Driver s Station is used for traveling. J. Body Completely down on chassis. Know the clearance of all over-head obstructions, viaducts, bridges, etc., as the unit is approximately 12 6 in height with the lift in the retracted and down position. See decal in chassis cab for this units overall height. NEVER drive under any overhead obstruction with the lift assembly in the extended and raised position as unit may be too high and/or wide. Any chassis suspension modification may alter the height. Check height after any such work has been performed. Failure to do so may result in unit damage, personal injury or death. PYTHON LIFT JOYSTICK CONTROL IDENTIFICATION The joystick controls all the lift functions and has 5 push buttons to control the grabbers, pump and packer panel. They are identified as follows. 1. JOYSTICK MOVEMENTS The joystick can be moved forward, backward, sideways and at an angle for the different functions. See below for the different movement and the functions they control. LOWER UNDUMP RETRACT EXTEND DUMP RAISE 3.2

JOYSTICK MOVEMENTS 1. LIFT RAISE pull and hold joystick to raise the lift. Release joystick stops the movement of the lift. 2. LIFT LOWER push and hold joystick to lower the lift. Release joystick stops the movement of the lift. 3. LIFT RETRACT move joystick to the left and hold to retract the lift. Release joystick stops movement of the lift. 4. LIFT EXTEND move joystick to the right and hold to extend the lift. Release joystick stops movement of the lift. 5. DUMP pull joystick down and to the left and hold for lift to move in and up to dump the container. Release the joystick to stop movement of the lift. 6. UNDUMP push joystick up and to the right and hold for lift to move out and down to place container on the ground. TRIGGER (DEAD MAN) The trigger on the joystick is used as a dead man switch only. It must be depressed and held when operating the Joystick Lift control functions (raise, lower, in, out functions). If it is released, the joystick lift functions will not operate. TRIGGER 3.3

PYTHON LIFT JOYSTICK CONTROL IDENTIFICATION 2. PUSH-BUTTON CONTROLS A. PUMP ON RED - depress and release button to activate the hydraulic pump. Depress button to turn pump off. B. PACKER EXTEND GREEN depress and release button and the packer panel will go through one complete packing cycle. NOTE: The power ON/OFF knob (red) must be pulled to the ON position and the pump switch depress for the packer to work. C. PACKER RETRACT YELLOW depress and release button and the packer panel will retract to the front of the body. NOTE: The power ON/OFF knob (red) must be pulled to the ON position and the pump switch depressed for the packer to work. D. GRABBER OPEN GRAY depress button and hold, when the grabbers get to the desired open position, release the button. E. GRABBER CLOSE GRAY depress and hold button until grabbers are fully closed around the container. Release button. 3.5

LIGHTS for IN-CAB CONTROL BOX The following lights are located in the cab in a separate control box. 1 9 12 6 7 4 2 3 8 10 5 11 1. POWER ON and OFF/STOP SWITCH RED must be in the ON position for any function of the pack mechanism to operate. Side door must be closed. A. Pull for ON position. B. Push for OFF/STOP position. The packer panel can be stopped at any position by pushing switch to OFF/STOP position. 2. PACKER EXTEND GREEN a green light that illuminates to indicate the packer panel is extending. Light will go off when panel is stopped. 3. PACKER RETRACT YELLOW a yellow light that illuminates to indicate the packer panel is retracting towards the front head. Light will go off when panel is fully back to front head. 4. HYDRAULIC PUMP RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the hydraulic pump has been turn on. Light will go off when pump is disengaged. 3.6

LIGHTS for IN-CAB CONTROL BOX 5. FILTER BYPASS RED a red light that flashes to indicate the filter is in or has been in bypass and the element needs to be changed as soon as possible. Each light flash is for each hour of operation with the filter in bypass. 6. TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE RED a red light that flashes to indicate the transmission fluid temperature has exceeded a safe operating range. Light will go off when transmission is cooled down. NOTE; When the transmission overheats, the hydraulic pump will automatically shut down for approximately 3 minutes. It is recommended that the transmission be placed in neutral and engine speeded up to help cool the transmission. 7. TAILGATE OPEN RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the tailgate has been unlocked and open. Light will off when tailgate is fully closed and latched. NOTE; An alarm will sound for 2 seconds every 10 seconds to indicate the tailgate is open and unlocked. Alarm will go off when tailgate is closed and locked. 8. SIDE DOOR OPEN LIGHT - RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the side door is open and not fully closed. Light will go off when door is fully closed. 9. ALARM sounds when tailgate or body is opened, unlocked or raised. Alarm will go off when go off when tailgate and body are completely down and locked. 10. BODY RAISED LIGHT RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the body is raised off the chassis rail. Light will go off when body is completely down on the chassis rail. 11. LIFT EXTENDED LIGHT RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the lift is extended and not in the closed or transit position. Light will go off when lift is in the stowed position. 12. HOPPER COVER LIGHT RED a red light that illuminates to indicate the hopper cover is closed over the hopper area. Light will go off when hopper cover is open and up against the body wall. 3.7

LIGHT SWITCHES on IN-CAB CONTROL PANEL Light rocker switches are located in the panel and identified as follows. 1 2 4 3 1. HOPPER FLOOD an on/off switch that when turned on, illuminates the hopper area when working in minimal light conditions or darkness. Turn off when not needed. 2. LIFT FLOOD an on/off switch that when turned on, illuminates the area where the lift operates. Use when working in minimal light or darkness. Turn off when not needed. 3. AUXILIARY on on/off switch that may be used for other optional functions. 4. REAR STROBE an on/off switch that when turned on operates the rear strobe light. Turn off when not needed. 3.8

AIR TOGGLE SWITCHES on IN-CAB CONTROL PANEL 1 2 3 1. TAILGATE RAISE/LOWER TOGGLE SWITCH controls raising and lowering of the tailgate. A. Push switch to raise. B. Pull switch to lower. 2. TAILGATE LOCK/UNLOCK TOGGLE SWITCH controls locking and unlocking of the tailgate. A. Push switch to unlock. B. Pull switch to lock. 3. HOPPER COVER TOGGLE SWITCH controls opening and closing of the hopper cover. A. Push switch to open cover. B. Pull switch to close cover. 3.9

SELECT-O-PACK To set the number of lift cycles before automatic operation of the packer, follow these steps. 1. Turn system power (E-Stop) button OFF. 1. Press and hold the packer retract button for 5 seconds. (The in-cab alarm will begin to sound on the fifth second). 2. Each additional activation of the retract button will allow one additional lift cycle before automatically packing the load. If no further activation s of the packer button are performed, the select-o-pack function will be disabled. 3. Turn system power (E-Stop) button ON to store memory. To switch between auto-pack and manual pack, 1. Turn system power (E-Stop) button ON and pump OFF. 2. Push and hold the retract and extend buttons until the beeper stops sounding. 3.10

SERVICE HOIST RAISE/LOWER OPERATION Before attempting to raise and lower the body, be sure the unit is; 1. On firm level surface and the Parking Brake is engaged and holding. NOTE: EMPTY BODY OF ALL REFUSE BEFORE RAISING BODY AND USING BODY PROPS. WARNING: BE SURE THE AREA AROUND THE UNIT IS CLEAR OF ALL PEOPLE! A. RAISING THE BODY 2. The service hoist controls are located on the streetside of the unit. 3. Stay clear of body and press and hold the raise button to raise the body fully. NOTE: RELEASING THE BUTTON WILL STOP THE BODY RAISING. RAISE BUTTON LOWER BUTTON 3.11

SERVICE HOIST 4. Unhook prop handle and lower the service hoist body prop. This is done on the street side of the unit. NOTE: RELEASING THE BUTTON WILL STOP THE BODY LOWERING. 5. Lower body to mate with chassis bracket by pressing and holding the lower button on service hoist control. A. LOWERING THE BODY 1. Raise the body slightly using the raise button. 2. Raise and store the body prop. 3. Stay clear of body and press and hold the lower button to fully lower the body. 3.12

PLC FAULT CODES Each fault code consists of a two digit number. When a fault has been set, the incab buzzer will sound for 5 seconds, then stop. It will then beep a number of times specifying the first digit of the code. The beep will pause for 2 seconds, then resume to a beep a number of times specifying the second digit of the code. FAULT DISABLED FUNCTIONS Certain fault codes will disable the normal operation of some body functions. This is intended to avoid any potential damage that may result from the malfunction. These functions will remain disabled until the fault condition has been resolved and the fault code has been cleared. FUSE CHART (CONTROL BOX) Listed below is the chart showing the fuses in the control box. 3.14

UNIT INTERLOCKS There are several interlocks provided to keep a specific function from operating when certain conditions exist. This will affect the operation of the unit and these conditions are as follows. 1. Pump Overspeed the PLC is programmed to disengage the hydraulic pump when the engine speed exceeds 1225 RPM with the transmission in gear and the service brake applied. The pump will reengage when the engine speed drops below 1200 RPM. 2. Side Door If the side door is open, the hydraulic pump will not operate. The pump will operate only after side door is fully closed, the chassis ignition switch is shut off and turned on again. 3. Filter Bypass Shutdown If the hydraulic oil filter becomes contaminated, the hydraulic pump will shut-off. If the oil filter element is not replaced within six hours of bypass condition, the pump will only operate in 3-minute intervals. This 3-minute interval can be reset by cycling the pump switch off, then on again. 4. High Transmission Temperature this interlock prevents operation of the pump when the transmission fluid temperature exceeds a safe operating range. The pump will not engage for three minutes after the transmission fluid has cooled to within operating range. 5. Engine Speed Shutdown this interlock prevents normal operation of the hydraulic pump when the PLC has become unable to correctly detect engine speed. 6. Lift for Joystick Control this interlock prevents two items from normal operation. A. Grabbers prevents them from being opened with the lift in the raised position. B. Lift Raised prevents the lift from raising when the grabbers are not fully closed. 3.15

SET UP UNIT After positioning unit on firm stable ground for dumping in the landfill, set up as follows; 1. Shift the transmission to Neutral. 2. Apply the parking brake and make sure it is holding. 3. Depress and release the pump (red) button on the Joystick to activate the Pump. 4. Unlock the tailgate by pushing and holding the tailgate latch toggle switch (located in control panel in cab), until the tailgate is completely unlocked. Be sure all individuals are clear of the point of operation before actuating controls. Be ready to stop or reverse the function. 5.2

RAISE THE TAILGATE To raise the tailgate, pull and hold the tailgate raise/lower toggle switch (located in control panel in cab) until tailgate is fully raised. Release toggle switch and it will go back to neutral position. NOTE: An alarm will sound inside the cab and at rear of the unit when tailgate is raised. EMPTYING THE BODY ALWAYS RAISE TAILGATE BEFORE RAISING BODY! 5.3

To empty the body, depress the packer extend pushbutton (green) on the Joystick (located in the cab) until all refuse is emptied out of the body and the packer panel comes to a complete stop. Release the push button. RETRACT THE PACKER PANEL To retract the panel, depress the packer retract pushbutton (yellow) on the Joystick (located in the cab) until panel is completely retracted forward into the body. Release the push button. CLEAN/INSPECT TAILGATE SEAL Before lowering the tailgate, be sure area where tailgate seal mates with the body is clean and free of any refuse and debri. Inspect seal for possible wear and/or damage and replace if necessary. LOWER THE TAILGATE Lower the tailgate by pulling and holding the tailgate raise/lower toggle switch (located in the cab control panel) until tailgate is completely down and against the body. NOTE: alarm should stop sounding when tailgate is completely down. 5.4

CLEAN BEHIND THE PACKER PANEL A. Extend the packer panel to the rear of the body. B. Disengage the PTO or pump switch. C. Turn off engine and remove the ignition key and place unit in lock-out position. D. Open access door and clean behind the packer panel after each load. E. Inspect packer tracks and hopper floor for excessive wear or possible damage. Close access door and return packer panel to front of body. CLEAN OUT HOPPER SUMP Clean out the sump area after unloading at the landfill. Be sure to close and latch sump door when completed. LOCK THE TAILGATE Use the tailgate lock toggle switch and close the tailgate until the tailgate open indicator light goes off. PREPARE TO RETURN TO ROUTE Make sure unit is in the in-transit position before leaving the landfill. See In- Transit position on page 2.9. 5.5

END OF ROUTE (DAY) UNIT SHUT-DOWN Every day at the end of the route (day), set the unit in the following position: 1. Check for fluid leaks from hose fittings, cylinders, valves and pumps. Check for worn or damaged hoses. 2. Turn off all lights and switches. 3. Set unit Parking Brake. 4. Make sure all cylinders are in the collapsed position, if possible. 5. Turn ignition switch off and place unit in lock-out position. 6. Turn Battery Disconnect Switch off. 7. Open air tank drain valve. 5.6
