First results of pilot projects In october 2016: Publication of a report (in French) and a summary (French and English) of the results of the 12 most mature projects at the end of 2015 Documents available in the library on ADEME s website http:///en/smart-grids-first-results-from-frenchdemonstrators On 4 different topics: Control and manage energy demand Favour the integration of renewable energy Anticipate the evolution of existing electrical grids Create new business models 7

Results 1. Energy Efficiency & Demand Side Response Information for consumers on their energy consumption Energy Savings (1% to 10% depending on the technical devices) Need to increase the «energy knowledge» of households Support & advice Support and advice to make behavior changes last Concept of power demand and grid constraints not known by the consumers (notably in the residential or tertiary sectors) Demand side management in the residential sector Sheddable power around 1kW/household (beware of technical issues) Acceptability quite high among customers (few overrides) Don t underestimate side effects around load-shedding operations (power rebound, energy shifting ) Should be linked with information on the consumers consumption in the management of their energy consumption, both from an economic and a consumer point of view Using the Linky infrastructure as far as possible to limit the cost of the equipment Load shedding side effects 8

Results Renewable Energy Sources curtailment 2. Integrating renewable energy Increase RE connectable on the grid Capping in a static or dynamic way Costs reduction and new contracts for grid connection Production & consumption forecast Storage Improvement of the different methods Local forecast leads to improve the local management and to limit reinforcements of the network Its flexibility and multi-service mode favors the insertion of RE 2 Batteries Li-ion 2MW/1,3MWh Venteea Project Technical feasibility of several ancillary services: frequency, congestions, voltage control But still not a clear business model for these technologies in the French context 9

Results 3. Electrical grids evolution Several technologies ready to be industrialized and rolled out Mini- PCCN (Numerical/Digital Substation) Various type of voltage and current sensors to measure or detect faults Variable voltage converter (controlled on-load regulating transformers) Large storage systems (MW scale) New IT systems Better state estimation of the grid Dynamic way of managing the distribution grid system (closer to its limits) Real Time Supervision of each line in a substation Telecommunications Interoperability & Cybersecurity issues and constraints on the systems 10

Results Regulated sector 4. New Business Models Check the economical benefits & the reliability of technologies to roll them out Deregulated sector Conditions for deployment are much more difficult to define (notably for the technologies downstream the smart meter) Changes in the regulatory framework Introduction of new mechanisms to support renewable electricity, which should add value to forecasting technologies and aggregation services Gradual opening of various ancillary services to competition, creating space for storage in particular Use of storage in off-grid areas to support the development of RE Capacity market could make flexibility solutions attractive 11

ADEME s next publications Study on DSM potential in the industry & tertiary sectors Participation in the work about the social and economic analysis on smart grids with Enedis, RTE, ADEeF (V2) New call(s) in the framework of the new Investment for the future program 12
