Medstead Mirror Medstead Central School Newsletter www.lskysd.ca/school/medstead Principal s Pen Beautiful colors. The excitement of harvesting the crop. Migrating birds and cool crisp mornings. Yes, fall has arrived in its beauty and splendor. We hope all are safe during this very busy time of year. The new school year has started at Club Med. We have had over twenty new students enroll in our school. This is exciting news. It has also created a scramble to meet the needs of the new expanded student body. We have had bussing issues due to lack of drivers and new routes. We are short teachers and educational assistants, have less money to put towards extra-curricular programming and have fewer resources to help from Central Office. However, even with all these challenges, what we see and feel is excitement and a school that is ready to work hard! 2017-2018 is off and running!! Part of the challenge this fall is planning our extra-curricular programming with about a quarter of the monies available to help with transportation. Athletics, drama, and student leadership have all used the transportation budget to help in providing a wide variety of activities and opportunities for kids. We will continue to provide these avenues to students. We will be actively fundraising, asking for donations, and requesting parents to help by driving students to events. In order to drive students other than their own children, parents will need to supply a current criminal record check, a photocopy of their driver s license, and have a package policy on the vehicle doing the transportation. YES we know that is a lot of work, but these regulations are in place for the safety of our students and the volunteers that work with them. Thank you to everyone for the support given to our fundraisers and requests for help. Did you know it is volleyball season? Hahahahahaahahahahaahahahahaahaaaa. Our school is definitely a volleyball school. We make no apologies for that. Other schools are big into basketball, or soccer, or fine arts. It doesn t matter really. The key is to engage students in activities that challenge them physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. We know volleyball so that is our venue. We know that not all students are as excited about volleyball as some of the adults in the building. As such, we offer other activities as well. If you have ideas about a program you would like to see at Club Med, approach the staff and we can see what we can do! HOLODOMAR: Voices of Survivors On September 27 th we had guest speakers come and present about the little known Ukrainian genocide under Stalin rule from 1932-33. We watched a moving documentary which included 25 survivors of HOLODOMAR (death inflicted by starvation). Stalin was determined to suppress Ukrainian nationhood by sending brigades house to house to confiscate not only grain harvest but basic foodstuffs, ensuring the starvation of the countryside. The Soviet authorities exported Ukraine wheat while millions of men, women and children perished. We have a copy of the documentary in the school library if you are interested in borrowing it.
