SERVICE BULLETIN (Not applicable to Mack Trucks Australia) (Supersedes SB-219-012 dated 12/3/03) NUMBER: SB-219-012 DATE: 8/11/04 MODEL: ASET AC, AI, AMI CENTRI-MAX ULTRA AND ULTRA PLUS CENTRIFUGAL OIL FILTER A new centrifugal oil filter, the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS, was introduced on ASET engines during June 2003. In order to have this improved oil filter introduced as early as possible, the new oil filter was first introduced in a one-piece spindle configuration, and later in a two-piece spindle version. The two-piece version will become the standard configuration. Production tie-in dates are as follows: One-Piece Spindle Version June 4, 2003 ASET AI and AMI engines beginning with engine serial No. 3M0067 except all DM and those MR models having manual transmissions. Two-Piece Spindle Version August 19, 2003 All ASET AC engines beginning with engine serial No. 3O0079, and November 11, 2003 all ASET AI and AMI engines beginning with engine serial No. 3V0313 All DM models and those MR models equipped with manual transmissions will continue to use the Centri-Max PLUS filter as clearance constraints will not allow use of the Centri- Max ULTRA or ULTRA PLUS filters. The Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS centrifugal oil filter has an improved rotor and spindle design which provides a significant improvement to the efficiency of the filter in removing contaminants from the oil. It is important that oil and filters be changed at the prescribed service intervals. REV Effective immediately, the Centri-Max ULTRA and ULTRA PLUS oil filter cover retaining nut torque specification has been changed to 19 lb-ft (26 N m). (The previous torque specification was 13 lb-ft [18 N m]). A new cover label specifying the 19 lb-ft (26 N m) cover nut torque specification will be implemented into production during the third quarter 2004. Whether the cover label has the old or new torque specification, the cover nut must be tightened to 19 lb-ft (26 N m). The part number for the new rotor is 236GB42M. This rotor is used with both the one-piece and two-piece spindle versions of the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS filters. Both the top and bottom bushings are smaller than the previous rotor, which results in increased rotor speed and improved filtration. For easy identification, the new rotor is black, whereas the previous rotor was cream colored. The new rotor is included in rotor and seal kit part number 57GC2231. 1 Figure 1 Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS and Centri-Max ULTRA Rotors SB-219-010 Page 2 of 8
The spindle for the initial version of the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS as introduced in ASET AI/AMI engines, is a one-piece design. The one-piece spindle is 8-1/2 (209.55 mm) long and extends the length of the cover assembly. The cover nut connects to threads at the top end of the spindle. The previous spindle is a larger diameter two-piece design, where the lower shaft is assembled to the oil filter mounting adapter and the upper shaft is secured to the cover by a snap ring. The final production version of the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS oil filter (part No. 485GB4365M) was introduced on ASET AC engines during August 2003, and on ASET AI and AMI engines during November 2003. The spindle journals are the same smaller diameter as on the one-piece spindle but this spindle is now a two-piece design. This filter requires the same rotor as the one-piece spindle. 2 Figure 2 Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS and Centri-Max ULTRA Current Version, Interim Version and Centri-Max ULTRA Cover and Spindle Assemblies SB-219-010 Page 3 of 8
The previous cream color rotor (part No. 236GB41M, included in Rotor and Seal Kit part No. 57GC2206) must not be used with the new spindle. The bushings at the top and bottom of the cream color rotor have a larger inside diameter. If the 236GB41M rotor is used on either version of the smaller diameter spindle, the rotor will be loose on the spindle and will not function. Whenever a rotor is replaced, it is extremely important to carefully check to determine which rotor is required. When the rotor is installed, it is also important to check for the proper rotorto-spindle fit. There will be a mix of vehicles, some requiring the new rotor. Particular care is required in checking vehicles built prior to the production change. Some of these vehicles may have already been updated with the new filter, thus these vehicles would require the new 236GB42M rotor. Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS Filter Kits All the parts necessary to convert from the previous Centri-Max ULTRA oil filter assembly to the new Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS (rotor, spindle and cover) are included in service kits (part No. 485GB4364M interim version, and 485GB4365M final version). Kit part No. 485GB4364M is used for AI and AMI engines only, and 485GB4365M can be used for both AC and AI/AMI engines. These kits are used one time only to convert to the new centrifugal oil filter arrangement at the next regular oil change interval. At subsequent oil change intervals, the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS rotor and seal kit (part No. 57GC2231) is to be used. Both these kits are available through the MACK Parts System. New engine filter kits containing the new rotor have been made available effective mid-2003. Part numbers for the engine filter kits containing the new 236GB42M rotor for ASET AC, AI and AMI engines are as follows: 57GC2231 Rotor and Seal Kit 57GC2232 ASET AC engine filter replacement kit with coolant conditioner 57GC2233 ASET AC engine filter replacement kit with Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) packets 57GC2234 ASET AI and AMI engine filter replacement kit with Coolant Conditioner Canister 57GC2235 ASET AI and AMI engine filter replacement kit with SCA packets 215SB325A ASET AI and AMI engine filter replacement kit without coolant conditioner or SCA packets 215SB324A ASET AC filter replacement kit without coolant conditioner or SCA packets SB-219-010 Page 4 of 8
The Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS centrifugal oil filter and the onepiece spindle described in this bulletin were introduced June 2003 for ASET AI and AMI engines, except in DM models and MR models equipped with a manual transmission. Because the one-piece spindle used with the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS oil filter is 8-1/2 (209.55 mm) long, the DM model and the MR model equipped with a manual transmission does not provide enough clearance to allow the cover to be lifted higher than the spindle when performing a rotor replacement. Installation of the new spindle and rotor (kit part No. 485GB4364M) are shown in the following instructions. The two-piece spindle version would be installed in the same manner: On CV model chassis having an engine serial number prior to 2Y0516, the fuel supply and return lines may be routed over the top of the Centri-Max oil filter. Having the fuel lines routed in this manner will not allow removal of the oil filter cover. If the fuel lines are not routed correctly (as shown in the following illustration), routing must be changed as outlined in service bulletin SB-224-003. 3 Figure 3 Proper Fuel Line Routing CV Model Chassis SB-219-010 Page 5 of 8
1. To prevent contamination from entering the engine, thoroughly clean the area around the centrifugal oil filter before removing the cover assembly. 2. Loosen the nut at the top of the cover assembly, then remove the cover. 3. Remove and discard the rotor and seal from the oil filter mounting adapter. 4. Using a 22 mm wrench on the hex of the lower shaft, remove the shaft from the oil filter mounting adapter. 4 Figure 4 Removing Lower Spindle from Oil Filter Mounting Bracket 5. Clean the spindle mating threads in the oil filter mounting adapter with Loctite Non- Chlorinated Parts Cleaner (or similar type of safety solvent) and blow the area dry with clean shop air. 6. Apply Loctite 271 to the threads on the lower end of the new spindle. A 0.5 ml container of Loctite 271 is supplied with the parts kit. 5 Figure 5 Apply Loctite 271 to Spindle Threads SB-219-010 Page 6 of 8
7. Assemble the new spindle to the oil filter mounting adapter. Use an accurately calibrated torque wrench with a 5/8 crow's foot to tighten the spindle to 26 lb-ft (35 N m). 6 Figure 6 Tightening Spindle REV 8. Install the cover seal in the filter mounting adapter, then apply a thin film of clean engine oil on the outside diameter of the seal only. 9. Install the new rotor onto the spindle. 10. Install the cover assembly, taking care to avoid displacing the O-ring. Tighten the cover nut to 19 lb-ft (26 N m). Allow the Loctite to cure a minimum of one hour before starting and running the engine. This requires the use of either the coolant conditioner or SCA packets which must be purchased separately. 3. Available to convert Centri-Max ULTRA to ULTRA PLUS. One time usage only. After conversion, subsequent filter changes require rotor and seal kit part No. 57GC2231. Servicing personnel must be aware that some AC and AI/AMI engines may have been updated to the Centri-Max ULTRA PLUS filter in the field, even though the engine was not originally built with this filter. It is essential to refer to the assembly part number found on the oil filter cover and use the proper rotor and seal kit for the specified assembly. As an example, assembly part No. 485GC4363M requires rotor and seal kit part No. 57GC2206, whereas assembly part Nos. 485GC4364M and 485GC4365M require rotor and seal kit part No. 57GC2231. 4. The correct rotor and seal kit, or the correct filter replacement kit must be used at all subsequent oil changes after installation of an assembly part number 485GB4364M or 485GB4365M.
