This month s editorial focus is on industrial-vehicle technology. Big material handler from Cat Caterpillar s 325C MH (material handler) is designed specifically for sorting and loading scrap and demolition debris and handling bulk materials. The new model replaces the 325B MH. The 325C MH has a mass of about 76,350 lb (34,630 kg) and a maximum reach close to 51 ft (15.5 m). The machine is powered by a Cat 3126B engine. The six-cylinder, turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine produces 188 hp (140 kw), about 12% more net power than the 3116TA engine in the previous model. The 3126B engine features electronic control and the Cat HEUI fuel system for responsive and fuelefficient operation. The engine meets EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II emissions regulations. It has automatic two-stage speed control that reduces engine speed when power demand is low, for improved fuel efficiency, reduced sound, and operator comfort. The 325C MH uses the open-center, twopump, negative flow hydraulic system featured on other Caterpillar products. Increased engine power allows a 10% increase in hydraulic flow when compared to the previous model. Increased flow works with the hydraulic cross-sensing system to boost productivity through faster implement speeds and quicker, stronger pivot turns. Pump flow decreases when controls are in neutral to reduce fuel consumption and noise. The implement circuits are designed specifically for material handling. The grapple open/close circuit works with the other implement circuits to deliver simultaneous, multi-function control. The rotate circuit is powered by a separate gear pump, which develops a flow of 15 gal/min (57 L/min). A fully adjustable control valve allows the circuit to meet a wide range of grapple flow requirements. A separate fixed-displacement gear pump supplies hydraulic power to run the 15-kW generator that is needed to operate a magnet as large as 57 in (1.45 m) in diameter. A Cat-patented electronic magnet controller is linked to the generator, which improves reliability by eliminating the contactor maintenance that is required on traditional systems. The 325C MH structural components and undercarriage are purpose-built for durability in demanding material handling applications. The heavy-duty upper frame features higher strength The 325C material handler from Caterpillar is designed with heavy-duty features for sorting and loading scrap and demolition debris. by David Alexander material and thicker steel sections than standard excavators to enable the machine to reliably handle heavy swing loads. The undercarriage features a wide gauge of just over 11 ft (3.4 m), which is 16% greater than the previous model, to give the machine superior stability when lifting over the side. Overall track length is 15.3 ft (4.7 m). Sealed and lubricated rollers and idlers ensure reliability. The Cat two-piece front linkage provides enhanced lift performance and working range. Maximum horizontal reach is 51 feet (15.5 m) from swing center, and maximum vertical pin height is 53.5 ft (16.3 m). The front linkage is matched to either a 0.75-yd 3 (0.57-m 3 ) Cat Orange Peel grapple or a 48-in (1.22-m) magnet. The optional front linkage has a maximum horizontal reach of 46.3 ft original equipment October 2003 SAE OHE 31

original equipment The 3126B engine provides the power for the 325C MH from Caterpillar. The six-cylinder, turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine produces 188 hp (140 kw). (14.1 m) and a maximum vertical pin height of 49.5 ft (15.1 m). The optional front linkage matches the 1.25-yd 3 (0.96-m 3 ) Cat Orange Peel grapple or a 57-in (1.45-m) magnet. The 325C MH cab is mounted on a 77-in (1.95-m) cab riser to provide clear sight lines to processing equipment, trucks, and rail cars. The new cab features convenient adjustments that allow comfortable operation of the machine. Low lever and pedal effort, ergonomic seat design, and efficient ventilation help reduce operator fatigue and improve operator efficiency throughout the shift, claims Cat. The consoles have adjustable armrests for comfortable operation of the joystick controls. The right hand console allows easy access to all switches, dials and controls. The new compact monitor enhances viewing from the operator seat and displays a variety of easy-to-read information about machine functions. The 325C MH side-by-side radiator and oil cooler cores are separated to prevent stacking of debris and to allow easier access for cleaning. The oil cooler swings out horizontally for easy cleaning, and the radiator compartment is easily accessed through a service door. The service and maintenance intervals have been extended to reduce cumulative service time and increase availability. Longer service intervals include engine oil and filters and the hydraulic filter. Many service locations are easily accessible at ground level to promote quick and efficient maintenance. A remote greasing block on the boom delivers grease to hardto-reach locations. The pre-start monitoring system enables the operator to check coolant, hydraulic oil, and engine oil levels from inside the cab. If fluids are below the preset levels, the monitor displays a warning. The air filter features a double-element construction for improved cleaning efficiency. If the air cleaner plugs, a warning is displayed inside the cab. Scissor lifting from JLG An entirely new family of five electric-powered scissor lifts has been introduced by JLG Industries, Inc., including the world s first (according to JLG) 30-in (760-mm) wide, 26-ft (7.9-m) platform height machine. Designated the Pro-Fit Series, the machines feature an electric-drive system that uses two independent electric motors for the drive wheels. The new drive system provides longer duty cycles and lower noise levels by eliminating the power loss associated with pumps, hoses, and hydraulic motors. The scissor lifts also incorporate a newly designed hydraulic system that combines the hydraulic lift pump, reservoir, and motor with the lift cylinder into a single assembly. The design reduces the complexity of the hydraulic system to only two hoses and four fittings, which means greater reliability and reduced maintenance by reducing potential leak points. 32 SAE OHE October 2003

For ease of operation, the updated control station permits one-handed control of both the proportional drive and lift functions. The platform decks have also been redesigned and are manufactured from non-corrosive aluminum with non-skid strips. The Pro-Fit Series machines have front-wheel drive and steering for a tighter turning radius and 5.5-in (140-mm) ground clearance, so they clear doorway thresholds and can be driven onto trailers and rollback trucks. They are equipped with non-marking tires and can be operated indoors or outdoors. The three Pro-Fit Series narrow models have a 30-in (760-mm) overall width so they can be driven through standard doorways. Platform heights on the narrow models range from 19 to 26 ft (5.8 to 7.9 m) with capacities from 500 to 800 lb (225 to 365 kg). Gradeability on all five models is rated at 25%. The two wider Pro-Fit Series scissor lifts have maximum platform heights of 26 ft (7.9 m) and 32 ft (9.8 m) and original equipment The platform deck of the JLG Pro-Fit scissor lift is made from noncorrosive aluminum with non-skid strips. capacities of 1000 lb (455 kg) and dual 700/1000 lb (320/ 455 kg), respectively. Machine width on both models is 46 in (1170 mm), and the rails fold down to a 76.5-in (1945-mm) overall height. All Pro-Fit Series machines can also be equipped with JLG s Workstation in the Sky accessories that include panel racks, pipe racks, and a 200-A QuikWelder package. original equipment The Haulotte HA98JRT (designated HA32PX in Europe) articulated platform features four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer for maneuverability. Haulotte extends its reach The Pinguely-Haulotte Group has introduced two new articulated platforms in the Haulotte range, the HA85JRT and the HA98JRT. Designed to work at heights up to nearly 92 ft (28 m) and 105 ft (32 m), the HA85JRT and HA98JRT platforms are used in many industries, such as building sites, shipbuilding, petrochemical, and aeronautical. With a reach of about 70 ft (21.3 m) and 53.5 ft (16.3 m) respectively, combined with a 37 ft (11.4 m) up-and-over clearance, the new HA98JRT and HA85JRT cover a large working area and allow the user to avoid obstacles. The simultaneous four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer, a 15 in (380 mm) ground clearance, two extended axles, and a hydraulic differential lock system provide all-terrain performance with a 45% gradeability rating. The oscillating axle, while helping to improve operator comfort, also contributes to this driveability. The new HA85JRT and HA98JRT feature an improved hydraulic system that provides close user control for improved comfort and easier driving, with softer, smoother movements in all directions. Simultaneous movements allow quick access to the working area. Continuous 360 turntable rotation, the flying jib motion, and the 180 platform rotation offer high maneuverability regardless of the working environment. The load control in the platform simplifies the operator s job and the extended axles improve stability. The 5.6 ft (1.7 m) fuel-tank filling height and the rotating engine tray are designed to make maintenance simple. The platforms can be equipped with a General Motors dual gas/ fuel engine and a 3.3-kW generator on board. Material handling from Stone Stone Construction Equipment, Inc. has added the Lift Jockey LJS2000 to its Stone Handlers line of material-handling equipment. Designed to fit through standard doorways, the LJS2000 has a load capacity of 1000 lb (455 kg), and it can be hoisted to work on upper floors. This ride-on or walk-behind lifter moves and raises pallets, blocks, packaged material, or anything else that needs handling on the job. The Lift Jockey LJS2000 is a counter-balanced fork truck that can pick up any width pallet using either pallet or block forks. Three interchangeable heavy-duty masts are available that lift loads to heights of 7.5, 8.5, and 9.5 ft (2.3, 2.6, and 2.9 m). The masts feature an innovative hydraulic design to control flow and pressure, allowing for smooth and stable lifting and lowering of loads. The masts can tilt several degrees both forward and back to facilitate easy pick-up and discharge of loads. The lockable, fold-up operator platform is contoured to allow increased maneuverability in confined areas. The platform provides operator comfort while riding, and easily moves out of the way should the operator choose to walk behind. An extra-large, platform-mounted service brake gives added safety and a lift pedal provides for both controlled lifting and lowering. The lifting action can be stopped instantaneously by placing the pedal in the neutral position. The pedal is an integral part of the operator platform, allowing the operator to actuate the pedal without stepping off the platform. 34 SAE OHE October 2003 Circle 234

The Stone Lift Jockey LJS2000 can carry loads up to 1000 lb (455 kg) and is designed to fit through a standard doorway. All operator controls are ergonomically designed and centrally located within easy reach. The handlebar-mounted forward- and reverse-speed control can be moved to the left or right of the machine depending on operator preference. A lever actuates the tilt system for ease in picking-up or discharging loads. The lift lever provides precise, controlled lifting, and can also be operated through a lift pedal. There is an operator horn for additional safety. The LJS2000 is powered by an electric-start 8-hp (6-kW) Honda engine and has a fully enclosed hydrostatic drive system with a removable 7.5-gal (28-L) hydraulic tank. A large 7-gal (26.5-L) fuel tank provides ample run time. The hydraulic system features precision components such as Hydrogear drive and lift pumps and motors and Parker hydraulic components for reliable operation. An automotive-type braking system is standard for added reliability and increased serviceability. Foam-filled tires are standard, to provide added reliability on tough job sites. An optional quick-release tire system with a second set of foam-filled tires and quick-release hubs is also available, which allows the user to quickly add a second set of tires for added stability on rough terrain, and remove the extra tires to allow access through doorways. Optimum service access is provided through a one-piece polyethylene engine cover that requires no tools to remove and can be lifted away for full access to the engine compartment and all the hydraulic components. The one-piece lift-up polyethylene cylinder cover locks in the up position for convenient access to the wheel motors and automotive braking system. Four interchangeable, adjustable fork options provide efficient handling of all types of loads. Customers can choose from round block forks or pallet forks in sizes from 22 to 36 in (560 to 915 mm). original equipment Daewoo s forklift has stopping power Daewoo has brought its T3 Series electric lift trucks to the U.S. market, expanding the range it offers to include the 3000- to 4000-lb (1360- to 1815-kg) capacity. T designates three wheels, and 3 indicates a minimum capacity of 3000 lb. The three basic models in the range are the B15T, the B18T, and the B20T, where B implies battery power. Each model can be specified with one of 15 available masts. A single hydraulic motor provides flow for steering and all hydraulic functions, eliminating the need for a separate power steering motor. The steer and drive axle features a rack-and-pinion system operating in oil within a one-piece cast steel housing. The sealed system has no linkages and does not require lubrication or adjustment. The optimized gear geometry was designed to minimize space requirements and reduce noise levels. The T3 series come standard with a single-steer wheel and an option of dual-wheel steer. The standard pump motor controller adjusts lift, tilt, and auxiliary speeds to match hydraulic speeds for specific attachments, resulting in extended battery life and increased hydraulic motor brush life. The main hydraulic motor is rated at 8.2 hp (6.1 kw), and the two drive motors at 4.8 hp (3.6 kw). Large drive and hydraulic motors result in improved lift and travel speeds. Another standard feature on the T3 series is the Daewoo oil-cooled disc brake system (OCDB), which is designed to stand up to extreme heat, humidity, abrasive and corrosive environments, to extend brake life, and decrease maintenance costs. The The B18T electric forklift truck from Daewoo has standard oilcooled disc brakes. Circle 236 36 SAE OHE October 2003 OCDB is totally enclosed to seal out contaminants, and the components are continually bathed in oil to reduce the chance of overheating. The system is mounted outboard, which makes servicing faster and simpler than most shoebrake systems. Daewoo warrants the OCDB system for five years or 10,000 operating hours, whichever comes first. Transistor and microprocessor technology offers low noise, improved thermal efficiency, longer battery life, on-board diagnostics, and can be programmed to match the customer s needs. Built-in diagnostics help to deliver simple, quick, and complete troubleshooting. Thermal protection of the panel helps prevent overheating that could damage components. O- Ring face seals in the hydraulic hose fittings minimize leaks and hydraulic failures. The optional 12-V lighting system using halogen lights runs cooler, longer, and more efficiently than 36- or 48-V systems, according to Daewoo. The 12-V halogen lighting system also offers a long bulb life, requiring approximately one bulb change for every three changes on typical units. The T3 series provides good forward and overhead visibility with an open-bar overhead guard, and a roomy, comfortable operator compartment. A wide, open foot step with an anti-skid plate eases operator access and egress. Control valve levers are positioned for the operator s optimum comfort, with precise and quiet hydraulic controls. Hydraulic speeds can be programmed to the operator s preference, and the ability to adjust the steer column from outside the truck makes for easier access and egress. Hydrostatic steering requires very low turning effort with no steering kick-back. The floormat insulates noise from below the floorplate, and quiet operation of components contributes to low noise levels.

Crown pallet trucks original equipment Crown Equipment Corp. has introduced a new series of pallet trucks, the PE 4000 Series, which is up to 45% heavier than other pallet trucks. Additional steel is used at critical stress points, allowing the PE 4000 Series to handle the tough environment of dock plates and uneven floors. Crown rider pallet trucks have wear plates constructed of T1 steel (the same kind used on bulldozer blade tips) to protect the lift linkage. The PE 4000 s steel doors guard against damage to internal components. The Crown PE 4000 Series features a large drive unit and a 13-in (330-mm) drive tire for a smoother ride and sure handling of larger loads. The truck s caster assembly incorporates shim-free, quick-adjust features designed to increase wheel life, stability, handling, braking, and traction. The PE 4000 Series has a new operator platform designed to increase operator comfort, with rounded edges and careful placement of operator contact points. Contoured steel doors allow for maximum operator and foot room. A microcellular composition floor mat and a ribbed rubber knee pad are provided for improved operator comfort and to protect against heat, jarring motions, and bumps that cause fatigue. The Crown PE 4000 Series has dual, soft urethane twist grips with automatic return to neutral when released. Two textures and unique cam design aid in plugging, steering, and long-distance travel. On the control pod are full width raise, lower, and horn buttons for easy actuation. A safety button in the control handle reverses the direction of travel if the button comes in contact with the operator. The soft urethane operator grab bar has raise, lower, horn, and high-speed controls for improved productivity. The one touch high speed feature allows operators to travel in high-speed mode and not have to hold the button down. High speed is deactivated when the twist grip returns to neutral or when the brake is applied. An anti-tie down feature is standard and designed to encourage proper operation of the truck by deterring the taping or tying down of the high-speed control button. The Quick Coast option allows the truck to coast as the operator walks down the aisle performing low-level order picking. The Quick Coast switch is located on the grab bar for easy activation, and includes infinitely variable handle positioning within the coast range, while the audible and visual feedback features remind operators the Quick Coast option is activated. The Quick Coast option meets current ANSI/ASME requirements. The QuickPick control handle option, normally used in conjunction with coast control or Quick Coast, assists an operator in performing low-level order picking. The QuickPick control handle has two switches on each side of the handle, and activation allows the truck to travel, power unit first, at walking speed. A heavy-duty 24-V electrical system for warehouse, dock, and transport applications is standard. A lift limit switch operates at full lift height to shut the pump motor off at full fork elevation. Transmission is by all-gear drive from drive motor to drive wheel axle, running in an oil-filled, sealed housing. The drive unit is mounted at both top and bottom. The top mount is a large, tapered roller bearing and the bottom mount has four shock-mounted rollers on the drive unit running in a hardened steel roller race. The drive-tire axle is supported at both ends in the drive unit for maximum strength in rough floor or docking applications. Standard on the PE 4000 Series are shim-free, springloaded, articulating, stabilizing casters designed and manufactured by Crown for increased truck performance and service life. Crown has designed two optional caster systems for the PE 4000 Series to meet high-volume warehouse requirements. Option 1 includes quick-adjustment casters to enable braking, traction, steer effort, and stability to be balanced based on specific applications. This system can also increase drive tire life by as much as 60% by permitting more tire wear, according to Crown. Option 2 adds to option 1 a torsion bar suspension that maximizes stability on tall, unwieldy and less stable loads.
