Steering control of the bus is thus largely maintained. Acceleration skid control (ASR) ASR prevents the wheels from spinning when moving off on a slippery surface. It only delivers as much power as the driven wheels can transmit to the road surface. Spinning of individual wheels, on ice at the edge of the road, for example, is prevented by precisely metered brake applications. Brake Assist (BA) On detecting an emergency braking situation, the Brake Assist electronics make the maximum braking power available within a fraction of a second, thus reducing the vehicle s stopping distance appreciably. Electronic Stability Program (ADAPTIVE ESP ) In critical dynamic handling situations, the Adaptive Electronic Stability Program applies varying braking forces to each wheel while adjusting the engine output. This precisely metered brake application prevents a rearwheel skid from developing - as far as this is physically possible. Unlike conventional electronic stability systems, ADAPTIVE ESP takes the vehicle s current load status into account as a control parameter. In this way, ADAP- TIVE ESP makes an appreciable contribution to reducing the risk of skidding when cornering or swerving to avoid an obstacle. Start-off Assist On inclines with a gradient greater than approximately 4 %, the Start-off Assist system maintains the brake pressure for about 2 seconds after the brake pedal has been released. This brief holding function prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards and so makes it easier to move off on uphill slopes. AAS does not intervene when moving off on a downhill slope or when the parking brake is applied.
