Product Overview Power Supply Selection Considerations Contents Power Supplies Power Supplies Power supplies are the most crucial components in any system whether powering a light, to a large control system, a failure is always an inconvenience and an unexpected cost. An incorrectly selected power supply while cheaper in cost may not meet the demands of the system or underrated will run hotter and have a reduced life and fail unexpectedly causing an unplanned shutdown. A correctly sized power supply operating within its limits and characteristics will provide many years of reliable service. Below are some ideas when selecting your next power supply from our range. If you require assistance, please contact your nearest distributor. Let s connect. Key requirements for selection are: Description System current requirements: System characteristics: Future expansion / Overhead Ambient temperature Redundancy Power Quality What is the total current for all devices from manufacturers data sheets. Does the system have high starting currents, instantaneous currents from solenoids or inductive loads, or a flat requirement. Is there a future expansion for this system. What extra capacity is allowed for. What is the expected cabinet temperature the power supply will be operating in considering ambient and heat rise less any cooling function. A cost effective solution where 2 power supplies are used with diode separation which allows 1 power supply to fail and be replaced whilst the system remains in operation. Uninterruptable Power Supplies DC-UPS and Battery Modules Uninterruptable Power Supplies DC-UPS and Battery Modules DC-UPS uninterruptible power supply DC-UPS 10/20A or 40A Backup Power Supplies Uninterruptable Power Supplies or UPS are commonly used in all plants but primarily for mains voltage. These will convert mains voltage to DC for charging batteries then convert back to mains voltage for powering equipment. When the mains voltage dips, the power is sourced from the battery until the voltage returns on the mains power. Most likely this will feed a power supply to convert mains voltage to 24V DC. This not only complicates the power system design but also adds to losses in the system which must be designed in. Weidmüller can now simplify this technique with our DC UPS system. This utilises the existing 24V DC from your power supply to additionally manage a battery charging system complete with temperature based charging, visual and digital status as feedback for the control system while also managing the load. When a 24V DC input fails, the UPS will run on batteries for a pre-determined time adjustable from 0.5-45mins or when used for emergency supply till flat to hold up the 24V DC system for as long as possible. With a UPS system, the most critical part is the batteries. For longevity from your batteries, they must be kept ideally at 22 C and less than 40 C or risk a dramatically reduced life which then adds to another maintenance task, so when the ambient temperature is high, a temperature controlled charging system increases the charging time to reduce heat in the battery and increase battery life. Weidmüllers combined DC-UPS and battery systems aim for reliable long term operation when used correctly, utilising absorbed glass mat (AGM) Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries suitable for float charging systems. When designing a backup system using a UPS, circuits must be segregated into critical (need to stay alive) and non-critical (not requiring backup). This must be done effectively to ensure the UPS system does not become too large or cumbersome. Critical circuits could include PLC, HMI, safety systems, solenoids, Servo control and other devices required to ensure the machine or plant is in a ready state to run when power is returned. Backup Power Supplies For a highly reliable DC-UPS function, the Weidmüller system will provide years of service life ensuring full uptime and stability of your 24V DC control system. Interruptions can be bridged up to 30 minutes at 40A or 30 hours at 1A with a choice of 10/20A model or 40A model depending on system size. Select from the 5 battery sizes depending on holdup time you require for systems current consumption. The unit is complete with 1 Digital input for Interlock normally linked, and 3 digital outputs ( Relay & transistor). In normal operation output 3 would be on to indicate charging of batteries in progress. Line Buffering (back-up mode) Interlock Safe Load Alarm Buffering Charging Digital Output Status When 24V DC supply is removed, the non-critical load will stop and the battery will instantly power the safe load or output for a pre-set time period from 0.5-45 mins or for as long as possible (deep discharge). Digital Output 2 will provide feedback that DC-UPS is buffering the load and output 1 will initiate when either the pre-set cut off time is reached, or deep discharge has caused the battery voltage too low. INSTAPOWER power supply units: up to 3 devices can be connected in parallel. PRO-M power supply units: up to 5 devices can be connected in parallel. Indication of the failure of individual devices can be achieved using optional diode modules. TIP To ensure the most even distribution of the load within the parallel connected power supply units, the voltage difference must not be more than ±50 mv. This balance is achieved when the plus wire is connected. Symmetrical wiring also helps to distribute the current uniformly. DC/DC converters galvanically isolate the input from the output voltage and prepare them: To compensate for voltage losses which occur due to the higher cable resistance. To avoid ground loops which can occur in plants which are spread over a large area. A potential-free alarm relay and a transistor output give you full status monitoring. Special versions, supplied as protection class III devices, mean that you can use them in floating earth systems such as might be found when operating back-up batteries. 24VDC I/O Devices and Sensors 24VDC Solar Cell Antenna I/O 24VDC 24VDC Radio Transmitter 24V (powered) Antenna SCADA System or Other Type of Control System Mains interruptions and brown-outs are a frequent cause of system failures. Battery-supported or capacitor based uninterruptible power supply units (UPS) units cover these types of mains network faults and thereby increase system availability. Different status relays permit status monitoring. The UPS control unit monitors the input voltage and, in the event of a fault, switches immediately to battery operation. When the power is restored, the input voltage is again switched over to the load and the battery is recharged. An integrated deep-discharge protection system and an optimised charge curve ensure that the battery has a long service life. For selective triggering of circuit breakers or for short-term additional power reserves, a capacitor module can be integrated into the 24 V circuit. The integrated alarm relay monitors the input voltage, thereby monitoring the status of the 24 V DC power supply. Sufficient power for the pulse triggering of circuit breakers (MCBs) To further increase the power reserves, multiple capacitor modules can be connected in parallel. TIP The capacitor module can be used independently of the output power from the power supply modules. When triggering circuit breakers, the line impedance must be observed (see main catalogue, 4.3). The availability of the power supply units is increased by the use of redundant circuits. Here, each individual power supply unit can cope with the total load required in the event of a failure by itself. Separate voltage monitoring of the input channels (alarm relay) Full status monitoring including voltage monitoring of both inputs thanks to the integrated Alarm relay. Diode modules give you 100 percent redundancy this is also known as true redundancy. TIP An example of redundant power supply units for an output current of 20A: 2 x PRO-M, 20A 1x CP M DM20 for 40A output load: 2 x PRO-M, 40A 1x CP M DM40 The breakdown of the whole secondary load into individual load circuits which have quick-operating safety elements in case of a fault is known as selective load protection. Electronic fuses are ideal to meet the special requirements found in selective load protection. The tripping characteristic curve of the electronic fuse is, on the one hand, fast enough to switch off the faulty circuit quickly; and on the other, tolerant enough to deal with a motor start-up or capacitive loads. A switch to turn the output on or off means that it is simpler to diagnose errors and to commission. The fuse triggering is signalled via a potential-free alarm relay A reset input allows the fuse to be switched on again remotely. 22 WAUS Power Supplies Core Assortment Catalogue 2013 Australia & New Zealand 23

Technical overview Power Supply Selection Considerations Power Supply Selection Considerations L N PE Active redundancy Uniform distribution of a load current over two power supply units using active current sharing. A significant increase in the availability of the whole power supply results as each power supply unit only ever operates at a maximum of half the nominal current. TIP 50 % of Load 100 % Load Always use devices of the same type. Active current sharing is achieved using the redundancy modules CP T RM10 and CP T RM20. 50 % of Load t m t ti 130 120 Additional 110 Power Reserve 100 up to 45 C 2 5 90 80 70 60 20 30 40 50 60 70 m i t t m t PRO-M Output Power Derating Curve Operating temperature, power reserve and derating Power supply units for industrial use offer extended operating temperature ranges ( 25 to 70 C). Up to the derating operating point, they have power reserves, above this point they can only be operated at reduced load. Up to 45 C, the device can be operated continuously with maximum of 120 % of rated current. Up to 60 C is 100% of rated current available. Inrush current limit Inrush current limiters improve the dimensioning of the mains fuses Power supply units from the lower power classes mainly have a passive inrush current limiter, e.g. PRO-M 3 A and 5 A models. Power supply units with larger power classes have an active inrush current limiter, e.g. all 1-phase PRO-M modules above 10 A. 80 U [V] U out Short-circuit and overload The PRO-M power supply units follow the IU output characteristic curve in the event of a short-circuit/overload and are therefore permanently short-circuit proof. Compared to Hicc-up or foldback characteristic curves, operation with almost any capacitive loads is possible. PRO-M power supply units deliver a constant 120 to 150 % of the nominal current in short-circuit operation with a simultaneously reduced voltage. When the short-circuit or the overload is removed, there is a prompt return to normal operation. I I I I N Power Reserve I Reserve U/I output characteristic with power reserve Without active current limiting With active current limiting I [A] t Output Voltage All Weidmüller Switchmode Power Supplies have a regulated output voltage, that is the output voltage remains constant irrespective of input voltage or load current, provided the supply voltage is within the specified range. Some models can be powered from DC as well as AC Environmental Environmental issues to consider are the ambient temperature where the power supply is expected to operate. Note the derating for high ambient temperature use. Vibration in the area of use must also be considered. Power Boost All Weidmüller Switchmode Power Supplies have start up boost of up to 400%. This allows for non resistive loads to be started. Inductive loads, i.e. solenoid valves and motors, have a starting current as high as six times full load current, while capacitive loads, i.e. some electronic devices and PLC s with input filtering capacitors have a start up current of up to twelve times. Switchmode power supplies have a built in protection circuit which turns the output off if a sudden load is introduced which exceeds the rated load of the power supply. Method of operation Primary switchmode power supplies are distinguished by a high degree of efficiency and also by their compact dimensions and moderate generation of heat. The mains voltage is rectified directly. The rectified voltage is then chopped with a higher frequency than that of the mains frequency. A transformer (which can be quite small due to the high switching frequency) converts the voltage with the switching frequency to the required value. The voltage is now rectified and smoothed by a filter. This regulator control itself is carried out by means of pulse-width modulation. The on and off times of the chopper transformers are regulated to ensure that the output voltage remains stable. Overload Protection Overload thermal protection is built in to protect the power supply if the load applied is in excess of the rated current, for a period of time. This will shutdown the output until the power supply cools down, and will need to be reset by disconnecting and reconnecting the input supply. Short Ciruit Protection Short circuit protection is also built in so that if there is a short circuit in the load circuit the power supply will shutdown until the short circuit is removed, and will auto start. Mounting Mounting types available are DIN rail mounting or chassis / panel mounting. Redundancy For redundant operation where two identical power supplies are connected in parallel, for reliability and safety reasons the use of diode auctioneering modules is necessary. In this configuration there is no possibility of a back feed from one power supply to the other and supply failure alarms can be operated. Load Sharing When two or more power supplies are to be connected in parallel for power sharing the output voltage of the power supplies must be adjusted to be within 50mV of each other. To achieve this the voltmeter being used must be accurate and all test leads must be securely connected when making the adjustment, not just held or pushed onto the terminals. The method of wiring must also be done in the correct configuration so as to avoid different wire lengths when bridging the power supplies. If possible the use of a single higher output power supply is a better option than parallel connect smaller power supplies. It is often difficult to get more than two parallel connected power supplies to current share. 24 WAUS Power Supplies Core Assortment Catalogue 2013 Australia & New Zealand 25

Glossary Notes Glossary Notes AGM Stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. AGM batteries belong to the VRLA battery family which has the electrolyte absorbed in a fiberglass mat separator. A gel cell has the electrolyte mixed with silica dust to form an immobilized gel. Very thin glass fibres are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime. Float Charge Float Charge is the constant voltage that is applied continuously to a voltaic cell/battery under operation. The voltage could be held constant for the entire duration of the battery cell s operation held for a particular phase of charging by the charger. The appropriate float voltage varies significantly with the chemistry and construction of the battery, and ambient temperature. With the appropriate voltage for the battery type and with proper temperature compensation, a float charger may be kept connected indefinitely without damaging the battery. Interlock The bridge link across the interlock terminals must be removed to avoid unintended battery operation during installation and initial test. UPS Uninterruptable Power Supply is a 3 stage device. Input stage, charger for maintaining batteries, and output stage. If the input power is reduced or drops, energy is derived from the charged batteries to deliver power to the output instantaneously. VRLA Batteries Stands for Valve Regulated Lead-Acid Battery. More commonly known as a sealed lead-acid battery. These batteries have a pressure relief valve which will activate when the battery is recharged at high voltage. VRLA batteries offer several advantages compared with flooded lead acid cells. The battery can be mounted in any position, since the valves only operate on overpressure faults. Since the battery system is designed to be recombinant and eliminate the emission of gases on overcharge, room ventilation requirements are reduced and no acid fume is emitted during normal operation. The volume of free electrolyte that could be released on damage to the case or venting is very small. There is no need (nor possibility) to check the level of electrolyte or to top up water lost due to electrolysis, reducing inspection and maintenance.
