He is responsible for ensuring that the platform s technical equipment which includes Samson sludge pumps works as intended. The rig Jakob works on is equipped with two Samson units. In principle, they function as to two gigantic central vacuum cleaners. A built-in piping system in the oil rig makes it possible to hook up hoses to various extraction points on board, when too much sludge is suddenly sucked up while drilling. We are very environmentally aware if there s even a hint of oil found in the sludge, it won t be pumped back out into the ocean, Jakob states. Of course, we could also clean everything out by shovel and bucket, but this way is much easier, says Jakob, as he shows off the pumps. When it s running, the pump handles all types of sludge and mud. And we use it daily. It s all pretty much done automatically, whenever we need sludge to be pumped over into big tanks, he explains. SAMSON VACLEAN SYSTEM VACUUM PUMP The VaClean uses a strong Samson liquid ring pump to create both vacuum and pressure. COLLECTION TANK When the tank is full, the vacuum pump is used as a compressor to empty it quickly. SIMPLE CONNECTION Installation involves attaching a source of cooling water, an electrical supply and then connecting the pump to your onboard pipe system. RADAR FOR TANK CONTROL The level of waste inside the tank is measured by a radar. When the tank is full, it will empty automatically. A process that completes in seconds.
