Checking ATF level; changing ATF Checking ATF level Important! The multitronic 01J gearbox requires a different ATF than fixed-ratio automatic gearboxes do. Only the ATF available as a replacement part for the CVT gearbox may be used in the planetary gearboxatf specifications, Page 00-13. Notes: The illustration on the reservoir of the charging device for CVT gearboxes VAS 5162 displays a warning indication in the top left corner to use ONLY the ATF specially formulated for CVT gearboxes. The illustration also shows pictures of the steps required to fill the gearbox. These steps will be explained in the following. Warning! Do NOT start the engine when there is very little or no ATF left in the gearbox following a repair or as a result of a massive loss of ATF. In this case you need to fill the gearbox first with 4.5 to 5 litre of ATF. Requirements for test: Notes: Gearbox not in emergency running mode. Vehicle in horizontal position. Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connected, vehicle self-diagnosis mode activated and vehicle system "02 - gearbox electronics" selected. Engine idling. Air conditioner and heating must be switched off. At start of test, ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 C; allow gearbox to cool down if necessary. The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF. If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too low, this will result in overfilling. If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too high, this will result in underfilling. Overfilling or underfilling will impair the function of the gearbox. ATF temperature appears in the display of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051. Checking ATF temperature Display on VAS 5051: Select diagnosis function "08 - Read data block" from the menu -1-.
Display on VAS 5051: 1 - Enter display group (figures up to 255) Enter "010" into the key block -2- to select "Display Group Number 010" and confirm entry with Q key. Display on VAS 5051: Read ATF temperature in display zone -3-. Check ATF level => Page 37-192 as soon as a rise of temperature to 30 C is indicated. Check ATF level Requirements for test: Engine idling. Vehicle in horizontal position. Shift through all selector lever positions (P,R,N,D) at
idling speed with brake pedal pressed (each position must remain engaged for approx. 2 seconds). Raise vehicle. Release fasteners -3- and -4- and take off rear section of noise insulation. Illustration shows configuration as of model year 2002. Place container under the gearbox. Warning! Wear eye protection When the ATF has reached a temperature of 35 C, unscrew ATF inspection plug -B-. Approx. 5 cl of ATF will always drain initially from the internal oil level pipe when the plug is unscrewed. At an ATF temperature between 35 and 45 C 1)a small amount of fluid should drain out of the inspection bore if gearbox is filled with the proper quantity of ATF (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up). 1)50 C for tropical countries Always renew ATF inspection plug. Tightening torque: 20 Nm The ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 C 1). 1)50 C for tropical countries If no ATF fluid has drained out of the inspection bore when temperature reaches 40 C, top up ATF => Page 37-194. Topping up ATF ATF specification => Page 00-13
Requirement for test: Engine keeps running at idle speed. Attach filled reservoir of ATF charging device VAS 5162 at the highest possible point on the vehicle. ATF specification => Page 00-13 The stopcock on ATF charging device must be shut. Screw connecting piece on stopcock of ATF charging device VAS 5162 into threaded hole for ATF inspection plug -B-. Turn stopcock in direction of filling hose -lower curved arrow- to allow ATF to flow into the gearbox.
Place suitable container below drain pipe of ATF charging device. Check ATF level by turning stopcock in direction of drain pipe -lower curved arrow-. The fluid level is correct if a only a small quantity of ATF comes out of the drain pipe before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 C. Approx. 5 cl of ATF will initially drain from the internal oil level pipe. This is normal. If no more ATF comes out, turn stopcock in direction of filling hose once again, and allow more ATF to flow into the gearbox. Check fluid level repeatedly. Unscrew stopcock from gearbox after attaining the correct fluid level. A few drops of ATF will escape after unscrewing stopcock. Always renew ATF inspection plug. Close inspection plug -B- before ATF temperature exceeds 45 C 1). Tightening torque: 20 Nm
At an ATF temperature above 45 C too much fluid will escape as it expands when heated. In this case the quantity of fluid in the gearbox is NOT sufficient! 1)50 C for tropical countries Press the button to exit from the function "08 - Read data block". Select diagnosis function "06 - End output". Switch off ignition and unplug the diagnostic connector.
