My First Corvette Jan Weber, an RCCC member since 2014, has owned three Corvettes. His first Corvette was a 1966 Corvette coupe. That original coupe is now considered a rare Corvette. It was one of 66, 1966 Corvettes ordered with Regular Production Option (RPO) N03. N03 was a 36-gallon gas tank and was available only in the coupes. The big tank equipped Corvettes were often referred to as tanker Corvettes by collectors most interested in these cars. One might think that only the largest horsepower Corvettes would order this option, but that was not the case. Look for a future article on tanker Corvettes in this newsletter. When asked how he got into Corvettes, Jan replied, I traded my 1965 Triumph TR4 in on my 66 Corvette, not knowing it was a tanker car. The engine was from a wrecked 64 Vette. The 66 was supposed to go to Yenko Chevrolet in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania. The 427 engine and transmission from the 66 was pulled to make a stock car. I drove the Vette to California while in the USAF, then back to Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee. My car payments were only $46.13 a month back in 1968. The 66 is currently in Huntsville, Alabama, being restored by a collector. Jan also owns a 1995 coupe. The River City Corvette Club is Jan s first Corvette club and he currently drives an admiral blue 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. Driving and participating in RCCC s cruising events are Jan s favorite Corvette activities. 7
You Might Be a Corvette Nut, if Daniel (Dan) Smith, RCCC (cont from page 6) The design of the front emblem was switched at the last moment. The original emblem design utilized a checkered racing flag and the U.S. Flag in the design. This was changed to a checkered racing flag and a flag with the French fleur-de-lis crest and the Chevrolet bow-tie emblem. GM lawyers felt that using the U.S. flag on a commercial product, if not illegal, was at least inappropriate. A replace emblem was overnight shipped to New York and installed on the show car just hours before the Motorama opening. 8
