MINOR CHANGE Change design description Design title: Installation of a transponder Aircraft identification Aircraft type: S/N: SZD-51-1-Junior B-1845 and B-2005 LS-3 4049 and 3159 LS-4 4888 LS-6 6257 SZD-36A Cobra W568 Design Summary: This change is made to install a Transponder Mode-S Garrecht VT-01 Series with a Dolba BD-1 antenna in the applicable aircraft. The design covers the installation of an antenna, a transponder, wiring and an optional additional battery. This change is similar for all effective aircraft, with the exception of the used mounting brackets/supports. CS 22.787 CS 22.1301 CS 22.1353 CS 22.1365 CS 22.1431 EuroCAE ED-73B Applicable requirements Note: the substantiation to applicable requirements is described on page 2, 3 and 4 of this change. Minor/Major classification The change has no appreciable effect on the mass, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, noise, fuel venting, exhaust emission, or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness of the product. So this change can be considered as Minor. Weight and balance After the changed is performed a new weight & balance report must be made. This can be done by weighing of the aircraft or by a calculation. Prepared by: Frank Beemster Date: 01-03-2008 Page 1
Requirement CS 22.787 Substantiation of the requirements Substantiation Battery box as shown in appendix 6 or 8 will be used. Optional battery installation SZD-51-1 Junior: Not part of this minor change. Optional battery installation LS3, LS4 and LS6: Installation of the battery in the baggage compartment will be done according to the instructions given in the maintenance manual of the glider. Optional battery installation SZD-36a Cobra: The battery in the baggage compartment will be installed on the support that also carries the central unit of the transponder (appendix 5, total mass 4.5 kg). The use of the supports that were originally provided for an oxygen system (mass approx. 7 kg) ensures a 9g load resistance. CS 22.1365 CS 22.1301 (a) CS 22.1301 (b) When the optional additional battery is used, it s installed in the well ventilated baggage compartment. The battery will be of the sealed lead-acid type (SLA) to prevent leakage of corrosive fluids and gases. The transponders P/N VT-01 / VT-01 Ultra Compact, manufacturer Garrecht, are ETSO-2C12a approved. The antenna Dolba P/N BD1 will be installed. According to the manufacturer of the transponder any type of suitable antenna may be used. Transponder installation SZD-51-1, LS3, LS4 and LS6: The transponder PN VT01 Ultra Compact will be installed in the instrument panel of the aircraft according to the instructions of the manufacturer of the transponder. Transponder installation SZD-36a: The steering unit of the transponder P/N VT-01 will be installed in the instrument panel of the aircraft according to the instructions of the manufacturer of the transponder. The central unit of the VT-01 transponder will be mounted on a support that fits in the brackets that were originally provided for an oxygen system in the luggage compartment (see appendix 5) Antenna installation SZD-51-1 Junior: The antenna will be installed on a bracket designed for this type of antenna. The bracket is bonded on a frame in the fuselage (see appendix 2). Page 2
Requirement CS 22.1301 (b) Substantiation of the requirements Substantiation Antenna installation LS3, LS4 and LS6: The antenna will be installed on a bracket designed for this type of antenna. The bracket is bonded on the fuselage (see appendix 3). Antenna installation SZD-36a Cobra:The antenna will be installed on a bracket designed for this type of antenna. The bracket is bonded on the fuselage (see appendix 4). Wiring, all types: The cable and wires used will be installed according the instructions of the manufacturer of the transponder. The antenna cable type is Aircell 7. Overload protection will be installed according to the instruction of the manufacturer of the transponder (see appendix 1). When the optional additional battery is used, a 6.3A fuse will be installed on the battery to provide sufficient short circuit protection. The wiring from the battery to the electrical system will be AWG 14 The transponders P/N VT01 and VT-01 Ultra Compact, manufacturer Garrecht are ETSO 2C112a approved. The control devices are all accessible on the instrument panel, sufficient cooling is reached by installing the transponder components according to the instructions of their manufacturer. After the change is performed, the transponder will be tested in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the transponder to verify that the transponder is in compliance with the EuroCAE ED-73B requirements. Note: All installation work will be performed in accordance with acceptable methods, techniques and practices for alternations, inspections and repair as shown in FAA documents AC 43.13.B and AC 43.13-2A and the Garrecht installation manual:01.0200.11e.
