CGI EMO DRIVING TOWARDS A GREENER FUTURE

cgi.com 1 Cutting costs through better fleet monitoring Worldwide, gas prices are at an all time high. In Europe, fuel prices have increased by 20% in just the last one year. Elsewhere in the world, the price rise has been even steeper. This sharp increase in prices has affected company bottom lines across industries and service lines. A typical 1,000 fleet mid-sized company today spends 700K- 1M more than it did last year on fuel costs. And the trend does not show any signs of slowing down. In this scenario, how does one arrest spiralling fuel costs or even bring them down? How does a company reduce the cost of ownership of its vehicle fleet without spending millions of Euros upgrading the entire fleet? Research has shown that driving habits has a significant impact on fuel consumption. Spending just 2% of your driving time in aggresive mode contributes to as much as 40% of your total emissions and leads to a proportional increase in fuel consumption. Bad driving not only impacts how much fuel is used, but also has indirect costs such as increased vehicle maintanence, driver safety concerns and loss of productivity through frequent vehicle breakdowns. Cost per vehicle per month Losses from fuel consumption 22 Increased vehicle maintenance 8 Reduced vehicle utilisation 5 Losses from fuel theft 7 Total 42 ESTIMATED AVERAGE LOSSES PER VEHICLE PER MONTH FROM INSUFFICIENT DRIVER MONITORING OF PASSENGER VEHICLE FLEETS. FIGHRES BASED ON CGI DEPLOYMENTS WITH CLENTS. In addition, poor monitoring of drivers often leads to abuse in the form of fuel theft or use of corporate vehicles for personal reasons. Such losses add up to over 40 per vehicle per month for companies with passenger vehicles and higher for companies with heavy vehicles. The key to cutting costs and reducing losses is proper monitoring of vehicle fleets in a manner that helps companies understand their usage and take corrective action. Even a 2% increase in aggresive driving time can increase carbon emissions by 40% Improved driving habits can help companies reduce their fuel costs by upto 15%

cgi.com 2 Introducing CGI EMO Over 95% of drivers report an improvement in driving within a few months of using CGI EMO CGI EMO is CGI s multiple award winning fleet monitoring and emission control solution that helps customers save time and money. A safe, efficient and reliable system to wirelessly monitor vehicle fleets in real time, CGI EMO helps fleets understand and take control of their costs through improved driving behaviour. Using a comprehensive set of tools such as an easy-to-use web portal, SMS alerts and real-time invehicle alerts, CGI EMO provides feedback to drivers and fleet managers on how to improve individual driving characteristics to become better, more eco friendly drivers. This in turn results in improved vehicle performance, lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions. Thus, CGI EMO helps any customer with a vehicle fleet to save money, ensure driver safety and reduce the environmental impact of vehicular pollution. How does it work? The solution consists of a device that fits into the onboard computer of the vehicle to measure various driving related parameters. Using proprietary algorithms, the solution then calculates the carbon emission and fuel consumption of the vehicle in real time and wirelessly transmits this data to backend systems for reporting and analysis. Drivers and fleet managers can then login to the web application or access reports from their mobile phones to perform detailed analysis of individual driving characteristics and scope for improvement.

cgi.com 3 CGI EMO Green Index score The CGI EMO Green Index score is a unique rating scale that helps drivers and managers easily understand their driving characteristics relative to other drivers. The score, given out of 10, helps drivers quantify their driving behaviour and measure improvement quantitatively. The Green Index score can be used by managers to seperate the good drivers from the bad and provide incentives for improvement. Measuring vehicle health In addition to capturing emissions and driving characteristics, CGI EMO helps reduce vehicle downtime by proactively reporting vehicle issues as soon as they occur. Since the EMO device is connected to the vehicle computer, any trouble codes raised by the engine are immediately reported by the solution and sent as alerts to the drivers and fleet managers. This helps fleet owners perform preventive maintenance of their vehicles thus increasing fleet performance and reducing downtime. Use in fleets CGI EMO has been designed from the ground up for use by vehicle fleets. Any organisation with a fleet can start using CGI EMO to see immediate benefits through reduced fuel costs and improved driving behaviour. CGI s engagement with clients around the world have shown that over 95 percent of drivers show an improvement in driving within a few months of the solution deployment. Through its targeted feedback and measurable results, organisations can create greater engagement with their employees by tying individual performance to corporate targets. CGI EMO s unique combination of proven vehicle telematics and user friendly application design provides a safe and reliable solution to measuring fleet performance in today s environment. 1 2 3 4 Equip your fleet Tie driver ratings Analyse and with the CGI EMO solution with CGI EMO performance monitor fuel and carbon trends Reward drivers proportional to impact Reduce fuel costs and improve fleet productivity using CGI EMO

Their business interests span oil extraction, refining and distribution. 6.4 7.8 8.1 Simple, cost-effective and, more than technology, focused on people s behaviour. Nicolle Fernades Project Manager, Galp The client prides itself for its strong social and ecological consciousness. Through various sustainability initiatives, it seeks to reduce the environmental impact of itself and its customers. Towards this end, the client approached CGI to implement the CGI EMO solution on their vehicle fleets. The goal was to bring about a change in driving behavior that would help reduce carbon emissions while also cutting fuel bills. Over a period of 3 months, CGI EMO helped the client reduce their fuel consumption by over 10% leading to average savings of 33 per vehicle per month. This improvement in driving characteristics was reflected in the 29% increase in their Green Index scores during the period. 6.3 5.8 5.5 1st month 2nd month 3rd month Fuel consumption (litres / 100km) CGI EMO Green Index score In addition, CGI EMO helped improve fleet productivity and driver safety through improved driving characteristics such as acceleration and overspeeding. CGI EMO with its intuitive, easy-to-use fleet solution helped the client take control of their fleet costs. 1.7 tons carbon saved 10%+ reduction in fuel 33 per vehicle per month savings

cgi.com 6 Leading European Postal Company The client is one of Europe s largest postal companies with a total fleet size of 50,000 postal vehicles. The client was looking for a way to reduce the environmental impact of their large fleet without significant investment in time and money. The client approached CGI to do a project with their fleet using CGI EMO CGI s sustainability solution to reduce vehicular pollution through improved driving behaviour. The requirement was to have a solution which did not require the client to spend significant money in upgrading their existing fleet of vehicles. At the same time, the solution had to be easy to use and require minimal changes to existing processes. Finally, the solution also had to work with the wide range of cars that the client used, from passenger vehicles to light trucks. To meet the requirements, CGI EMO was deployed in the client s fleet in a major European city. The results were immediate. In just 4 months, CGI EMO helped save over 4 tons of carbon emissions. The savings were achieved through targeted feedback to the fleet drivers using the CGI EMO solution. Drivers and fleet managers could now see their driving patterns analysed and the impact of those driving patterns on emissions. This reduction in carbon emissions also helped the client save money on fuel costs. Monthly fuel consumption went down by 8.35% during this period. In addition, CGI EMO also helped improve driver and vehicle safety by changing driving habits. Aggresive driving, characterized by hard acceleration and braking, reduced by 15% and overspeeding instances were brought down by 10%. Carbon emissions (g/km) 177 164 First month Fourth month 4 tons carbon saved 8.35% reduction in fuel 21 per vehicle per month savings

cgi.com 7 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is the only all-women rally in the world. Since 1990, it s been bringing women together from 33 countries to race against each other in the Moroccan desert. The Rallye has always been about promoting a greener way of driving, not just through smarter technology, but smarter driving techniques. Unlike an average race, the competition isn t about who can cross the finish line first. In fact the winner of the Rallye is the team who can go from start to finish in the shortest distance possible; minimising fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The Rallye is the first major sports event in the world to consider carbon emissions as part of their scoring system, and to get contestants to focus on reducing their carbon footprint. In 2010, CGI became an official partner to the Rallye. Together, we launched a new award for eco-driving which goes to the team with the lowest carbon footprint. But we needed to find a way to measure that data. The EMO Solution We realised that if we wanted drivers to change their habits, we needed to show them how much fuel they re using in real time during the event. So, in 2011, we fitted the Rallye vehicles with our award winning, CGI EMO solution to wirelessly monitor carbon emissions in real time. Then we looked at a whole range of factors emissions, speed, acceleration and braking to come up with a CGI EMO Green Index score for each team. The CGI EMO Green Index score was used by the Rallye as a judging criteria and counted towards the final score and ranking of the participants. So for the first time, a team could win the race by having the lowest emissions, even if they didn t find the shortest route. By the end of the eight-day race, CGI EMO had helped cut overall emissions by 10.5% and saved over 1.5 tons of carbon emissions. With the help of CGI EMO, we were able to cut engine idling by 25%, hard acceleration and braking by 50% and unnecessary speeding by 91%.
