Firm roadholding thanks to a modified chassis with a wider track and wider tyres the new smart fortwo not only always reaches its destination with ease, it gets there more quickly as well. The new, automated manual 5-speed transmission allows even more comfortable gear shifting with considerably more dynamic acceleration. Whether you choose to shift gears yourself using softip, let the softouch automatic gearshift programme do the work for you, or take advantage of the steering wheel gearshift, all depends on you and your personal driving style. Whichever you opt for, fun behind the wheel is guaranteed. And if fast acceleration is important to you: the new smart fortwo can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h up to 4 seconds faster than its predecessor. Of course that depends on which engine you go for: the 33 kw cdi diesel, or one of the petrol engines with 45, 52 or 62 kw of power. They are all economical and yet high in torque just perfect for the requirements of city driving. On longer trips, too, you will benefit from even greater agility: the maximum speed of the smart fortwo has now increased to 145 km/h (electronically limited). >19

Further innovative safety features such as the tridion safety cell, the sandwich-type construction, the crash boxes, the safety seats with integral seatbelts and the ability of the wheels to function as an additional crumple zone mean that if anything should happen to your smart fortwo, then the chances of anything happening to you are kept to a minimum. Do we still need to mention airbags in a car as safe as this? For example, the recyclable plastic body parts we call them bodypanels are particularly light, helping to keep the car s overall weight low, while at the same time contributing to low fuel consumption.
