What a thrill to get my first award for the Corvair. Judged first in the 1960 to 1969 category at the La Conner Classic Yacht and Car Show. We put in a lot of time and effort toward getting the car to look good again; getting the body straight and back to it s original color; getting the trim straight and bright again; getting the secondary carbs installed and running again. But it was still a surprise, because there are a lot of nice cars out there. Even in our club alone, there are a lot of fantastic Corvairs. Gale Pfueller won with his Corvair powered Ultra Van. He had a line of spectators, all day, waiting to get into his RV to check it out. Although an award is great, the best part of a car show is the people that that ask about the Corvairs. I am sure you have experienced the folks that talk about the Corvair they had earlier in their lives, or their Dad or Uncle had one. Some remember the comments about throwing fan belts, or constant oil leaks, and the unsafe thing with Nader. Then there are the many that had never seen one. And why is the motor in the back? And where is the radiator? They like the style, and did not realize they dated back to the 1960 s. So this has been a great year, because we are getting our Corvairs out at shows, and getting more people to learn about them. We had a turnout of eleven members with their cars at the La Conner Show, and I heard from folks that said they had never seen so many Corvairs at one time. Obviously they do not attend All Corvair shows. Gears continued on page 6... North Cascades Corvairs (NCC) is chartered Chapter 982 of the Corvair Society of America, (CORSA). Page 5 Vairious Times September 2010 September Article Engine Temperature Gordy has wondered what to do about not knowing how hot his 65 Turbo Corsa has been running ever since he bought it last year. He did a lot of reading, and making all the checks recommended, and everything pointed to a faulty thermister. He was not sure about his gauge either, so he spent some time with Ron discussing how to approach the problem. Gordy took the gauge out of his dash, and found an alternative used one from Greg. He went further, and found three used thermisters from John, and he and Ron set up a procedure to check the units. Ron and Gordy setting up The plan was to use the kitchen oven as a calibrated heat source. The rest of the components for the test were readily available. A 12 volt battery for a power source; A toggle switch to be able to turn the power off and on; Thermocouple wire to go between the thermister inside the oven, and the gauge outside the oven. Article continued on page 6... Wally s Service September 11

Page 6 Vairious Times September 2010 September Article It worked, except the gauge was not reading 400 degrees. It was about 25 degrees low. Ron, the clock repairman that he is, determined that the needle could be pulled straight out, re-aligned with the 400 mark, and pushed gently back on. Thermister attached to aluminum plate The power was turned off and on with the toggle switch, and it was repeatable. The checks were continued with all the different combinations of gauges and thermisters, as well as running tests at 300 degrees. The bottom line was that both gauges were working, although one had to be recalibrated, and only two of the three thermisters were good. Wires attached to Gauge The good used parts were put into the Corsa, and everything seems to be working just fine Gauge showing just under 400 degrees Through the Gears (Continued) This got me to pause and reflect back. Gordy and I regularly attended car shows, and I thought about getting a classic car to work on several years ago. I was one of those folks that had a Corvair back in 1962, and realized I never saw a Corvair at a show. I searched the internet, and realized they were around, and at an affordable price. The Corvair was attractive because it was unique in many ways. Look at the styling of the body in both the earlies, and the lates. Look at the air cooled rear engine. Look at the full independent suspension, and the uni-body construction. It does attract attention, not only at shows, but around town when I drive it on errands. I even had someone follow me for several miles into Anacortes one afternoon, to ask about the Corvair. I hope you all keep on getting your Corvairs out in public, and don t forget the Fraser Valley Wine Tour. Fred Croydon, President

Page 12 Vairious Times September 2010 NCC at La Conner Yacht and Car Show Ultra Van A BIG Hit!! Gale Pfueller's UltraVan was a huge hit at the La Conner Show. Several times during the car show people waited in line to have the opportunity to peek inside. Gale and the Ultra Van won the Best GM in the show. Information: The Ultra Van is a unique motorhome. Powered by a Corvair engine and transaxle, it was designed by David Peterson (a professional aircraft designer) in the early sixties. These units were produced in limited quantities by the Ultra Van Corporation of Hutchinson, Kansas until June of 1970. As a true monococque structure, the Ultra Van has no chassis. It is constructed like an airplane with aluminum ribs covered with riveted sheet aluminum on the top and sides. Compound curved areas (front and back corners) are fiberglass. All wheels are independently sprung with coil springs and tubular shock absorbers. These units cruise easily at 60 mph and deliver 15 plus mpg. More than 200 of about 370 units produced are still on the road, many with between 100,000 and 500,000 miles of use. www.corvair.org/chapters/ultravan/
