1 Background 1.1 Class 158 Classified Class 158, the trains began to appear in 1989. Called Sprinter Express, the name was based on British Rails wish to advertise the new acceleration ability the units had over older aging heritage DMU fleets. Their introduction saw a massive fall in journey times in the areas operated, with timetables quickly being updated to take advantage of these new trains. The Class 158 soon became common place across the UK, operating short distance domestic services as well as long distance cross country trains. With carpeting throughout, full air conditioning, and provision for a trolley service during travel, passenger comfort and relaxation was vastly improved and warmly welcomed by customers. Today a large number of different interiors have been adopted as private operators each seek to tailor their trains to customer needs. Various qualities of first class accommodation also exist. All seating in standard class compartments is in 2+2 formation, with first class sporting 2+1. 1.2 Design & Specification Builder BREL Locomotive Weight 38.5t Vehicle Length 23.21m (76ft 3in) Vehicle Power 400hp (300kW) Top Speed 90mph (145km/h) Brake Types Air EP 1.3 Class 143 The British Rail Class 143 is a diesel multiple unit, part of the Pacer family of trains introduced between 1985 and 1986. Originally they worked in the North-East of England, but were later transferred to Wales and South-West England Porterbrook proposed an extensive refurbishment of the Class 143 locomotives in order to meet The Rail Accessibility Regulations of 2008, which require that all public passenger trains must be accessibly by January 2020. In order to meet these requirements both the Class 143 and 144 locomotives would have to significantly reduce the number of seats available. The units are currently used on short distance services around Cardiff and Exeter. Previously they were common on services in the Bristol area. 1.4 Design & Specification Operator Total Built Locomotive Weight Vehicle Power Top Speed Build Date Arriva Trains Wales 25 Sets 24t 225hp (165kW) 75mph (121km/h) 1985 - Present Page 3
