WHY ARE 18650 CELLS A GOOD CHOICE? It takes time, and produces heat, as electrons move through a battery to get to the terminals and produce usable electricity. In the Tesla battery, because there are so many small cells a tremendous amount of power is instantaneously available. This also works in reverse as large amounts of energy (Superchargers are 120KW of Direct Current) can be transferred into the battery at a time. 41

WHY ARE 18650 CELLS A GOOD CHOICE? They are inexpensive to produce and easy to service The large surface area of the battery shell allows heat transfer The cells can be packaged into a very flat and dense battery pack A small part of the battery pack can be replaced if needed 42

In Arizona (and other states) it is illegal for a nonutility company to sell electricity. Instead, they sell time on a charger. How much energy you get per hour can make a huge cost difference if you are being charged for time not the quantity of electricity. 43

W = VA (WATTS = VOLTS * AMPS) This formula is the basis for understanding how much energy you will receive while charging. If a charging station is delivering 30 Amps @ 220 Volts, the amount of Watts being delivered is: (30 * 220) = 6,600 Watts/hr 44

$$$ PUBLIC CHARGING CAN BE EXPENSIVE $$$ Using the previous value of 6,600 Watts/hr, if fully discharged, the 85KW battery in the Model S needs: 85,000Watts @ 6,600 Watts/hr = 12.9 hrs to charge. The public chargers at my office cost 4 cents / minute. 45

OBSERVATIONS: In driving the Tesla for daily commutes for the past 8 months we have never worried about range. I think the Tesla Model-S is one of the most advanced cars produced today, however in many ways it is also one of the simplest. Total cost of ownership (and environmental impact) is limited because there is no: gasoline, engine oil, radiator coolant, catalytic converter, or carbon monoxide. The batteries are recyclable, as is almost all of the vehicle. I would buy another Tesla without hesitation. 50
