introduction Genuine Vehicle fluids an intrinsic part of vehicle performance Our Genuine Parts are specially developed for Volkswagen Group-brand vehicle models. They are consistent in terms of quality with that of the components that go into the manufacturing of these vehicles, fit with their components perfectly, and therefore offer optimal safety, reliability and performance. This of course also applies to all Genuine Vehicle fluids. VW Standards and Technical Terms of Delivery Precise Genuine Parts specifications, e.g. physical, chemical and technical properties of vehicle fluids, are adhered to in VW Standards and Technical Terms of Delivery. These specifications are set out by VW Group Quality Assurance and are the result of researching and testing their functionality and material compatibility. There are even Technical Terms of Delivery specifications for the form of packaging containers, since this is also decisively important. A metal container, for example, is specified for brake fluid, since using a container made of polyethylene (without an additional diffusion barrier) would result in the fluid s water content dropping close to the so-called action limit ( 0.15 %) only about 7 months after the filling date. The fluid s performance upon application would thereby already be reduced. 2

Thus, the braking system of a VW Group vehicle, for instance, performs best in combination with brake fluid that meets VW Standard 501 14. Similarly, Genuine Coolant additive was further developed in 2006 specially for newly introduced aluminum engines; and Genuine Windscreen Clear offers the highest degree of compatibility with all Group vehicle paints, synthetic and other materials. Volkswagen Genuine Vehicle fluids are manufactured strictly according to VW standards and specified technical terms of delivery. Established by VW Group Quality Assurance, the contents of these specifications define the prescribed ingredients, mixture ratios, etc. These specifications are consistent with official standards as well as those (usually significantly higher) standards set by VW Group itself. Additionally, all improvements undertaken in series production are taken into account in the manufacture of our vehicle fluids, so that the technical state of relevant Genuine Parts components always remains up to date. To ensure that the quality of its vehicle fluids is consistently high, Volkswagen AG controls the entire productions process in-house and by that of suppliers with its Formula Q quality assurance system. GENUINE VEHICLE FLUIDS AND NOTHING ELSE It is imperative that only those products that have been produced according to our specified Technical Terms of Delivery (or, as the case may be, are consistent with our prescribed standards) are used when servicing VW Group vehicle models. You should therefore always opt for Genuine Vehicle fluids from Volkswagen AG. Doing so ensures that the original operational and functional reliability of all Volkswagen, SEAT, Škoda, Audi and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles models is restored. This brochure is therefore organized in such a way that technical product information intended for you as an expert reader is preceded in each case by a two-page spread, in which a summarized explanation all of that product s requirements is presented. We encourage you to apply this information to your sales work with customers. The benefits of using Genuine Vehicle fluids must also be persuasively communicated to vehicle owners, since many of them do not realize the wide variety of tasks these products are required to perform, and what risks the use of other inferior-quality products entail. brake fluid Genuine Brake fluid Safe stopping performance no matter what Genuine Brake fluid offers several technical advantages that together comply with standard of quality defined by VW Standard 501 14. The use of fluids that meet this VW Standard is imperative for all VW Group vehicles built after 2005. They are, however, also ideally suitable for older models. 4 Genuine Brake fluid conforming to VW Standard 501 14 was introduced with the Passat B6, which among other things featured an improved braking system

genuine vehicle fluids What your customers should know: When force is applied to the brake pedal, it is transmitted to the wheel brakes. This function must never be compromised, whether due to the brake fluid freezing in very cold weather or otherwise thickening, or to it reaching the boiling point in very high temperatures or as a result of intensive braking. To prevent either possibility from occurring, a special glycol-based fluid is employed. This fluid possesses the required properties, including a highest-possible boiling point, as well as low viscosity in low temperatures. In addition, brake fluid must not be corrosive to any seals or to the metals of any hoses or cylinders. It must not be compressible either, in order that undiminished force applied by the brake pedal and brake booster is transmitted to the brake cylinder. The water content of brake fluid must not, however, exceed 3 percent, since water lowers its boiling point, which in turn produces compressible steam bubbles. Brake applications thus lose their effect, allowing the brake pedal to be floored without the vehicle coming to a sufficiently rapid stop. In the worst case, this can even cause a complete failure of the entire braking system. In order to maintain the braking system s functional reliability, brake fluid must possess the qualities specified in each case and must be changed at specified intervals. Failing to do so can lead to delayed braking reaction, corrosion, friction and wear, as well as handling instability. It can even lead to complete failure of the braking system. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning that it absorbs water from the atmosphere. This is a very important property, since any otherwise occurring formation of water droplets exposed to air would result in corrosion, and for that matter freeze in cold weather and vaporize in hot weather. 5

brake fluid Genuine Brake fluid is the perfect solution The further engineering developments reflected in the braking system parts of the Passat B6 also made it necessary to undertake further developments in brake fluid. The primary objective of this development process was to improve low-temperature viscosity. The results of this process namely Genuine Brake fluid conforming to VW Standard 501 14 sets entirely new standards of excellence. This brake fluid assists in reducing the times required by the ESP electronic stabilization program to generate pressure in low-temperature conditions by up to 30 percent compared to its predecessor (DOT 4 Standard), thus contributing to significantly greater reliability in terms of cornering stability. Meanwhile, its wet boiling point is 10 C points (18 F points) higher, thus providing greater operational reliability when water content increases or temperatures rise (illus. 2). This means that by using Genuine Brake fluid from Volkswagen AG, a greater margin of braking reliability is present near the end of each brake fluid change interval. Standard for all VW Group vehicles Genuine Brake fluid conforming to VW Standard 501 14 is mandatorily prescribed for all Volkswagen, SEAT, Škoda, Audi and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand vehicles built in 2006 or later. It is also, however, perfectly suited for use in all older VW Group vehicles, where it will also deliver all of its benefits. coolant additive Genuine Coolant additive Optimal engine protection at any temperature While radiator systems often used to only be given necessary attention during the winter months, employing a year-round coolant additive is nowadays considered indispensible. After all, G12 plus plus not only protects the engine in freezing temperatures, but also from overheating and corrosion, among other things. 8 Coolant additive also increases the boiling point of coolant water, thus preventing it from vaporizing in high temperatures

genuine vehicle fluids What your customers should know: In the absence of engine coolant, engines would be destroyed by the heat caused by combustion combined with that resulting from friction in spite of lubricants. Only a consistently effective coolant that reliably dissipates generated heat will prevent this from occurring. Coolant concentrate contains glycols in order to protect the coolant from freezing below 0 C (32 F), thus causing it to expand, which in turn can potentially lead the cylinder block, cylinder heads or the radiator system to crack. Other coolant additives include anti-foaming agents (which prevent foam build-up while filling as well as while the coolant is circulating through the radiator system), sequestering agents that neutralize hard water, silicate stabilizers and denaturing agents. present, several inhibitors are used. The concentrations of these substances as well as their synergies must be properly determined and applied. Vehicle radiator systems also include a wide variety of elastomer and polymer parts, such as rubber hoses, seals and expansion tanks. The coolant must not, of course, be corrosive to these parts either. A high degree of material compatibility is therefore indispensible. Finally, coolant must prevent the cavitation of materials it contacts, which can lead to their mechanical destruction. The term cavitation refers to the formation of small vapor or gas bubbles, which, when they burst, produce short, powerful blasts that can cause real impact damage to the material surfaces. The greatest demand put on coolant additive is the necessity for it to be non-corrosive. Coolant comes in contact with many different metal surfaces. Coolant additive therefore contains corrosion inhibitors, which coat the metal surfaces with a protective film. In order to prevent rust from developing on any of the various metals 9

coolant additive Genuine Coolant additive is the perfect solution The engine s radiator system includes a coolant reservoir. Apart from being where engine coolant is poured into the system, it also serves as an expansion tank. Pressure is equalized by two valves in the radiator cap, which optimally adjusts the radiator s operating pressure and prevents negative pressure from developing as a result of cooling. Volkswagen Group vehicles are increasingly being equipped with all-aluminum engines. Genuine G12 plus plus coolant additive is optimally adapted to these engines and largely consists of organic substances. When mixed in the right proportions, the pink-colored fluid s anti-freeze range is -25 C to -40 C (-13 F to -40 F). It meanwhile raises the radiator s boiling point to 135 C (275 F) and stabilizes heat dissipation even under such extreme conditions. In order for these performance capabilities to be met, the portion of coolant additive must be at least 40 percent and must not exceed 60 percent. Correct mixing ratios are detailed in the log book of each vehicle model. Our hand-held refractometer (100 007 A) is suitable for checking these ratios. Due to its hard-water stability, G12 plus plus prevents the cooling water from producing calcium deposits, which would otherwise increasingly build up in the radiator and heat exchanger, where the unhindered dissipation of heat is most important. Aluminum in particular is highly vulnerable to all acids produced during vehicle operation. The combinations of buffering ingredients in Genuine G12 coolant additive constantly balance the entire cooling water s ph factor, and thereby provide a calcium-dissolving effect with a neutral ph factor and without any acidic components. In addition, special components of Genuine G12 plus plus coolant additive prevent material surfaces from being gradually worn away, thereby protecting underlying surfaces from other forms of corrosion. Indeed, corrosion protection is a key characteristic of Genuine Cooling additive in the first place. Genuine Cooling additive is adapted to all of the metallic materials employed in Volkswagen Group engines, and is fully compatible with all rubber and plastic compounds employed in the radiator systems of all Volkswagen Group vehicles. In addition to organic acids, G12 plus plus contains silicate as an additional measure against corrosion. In larger engines, the silicate assures faster formation of a so-called inhibition layer on the surface that prevents pitting. The coolant thus reduces the increased potential for corrosion presented by the larger aluminum surface area in the engine block and in the cylinder head. 10

windscreen clear Genuine Windscreen clear Clear forward visibility in any weather Having an entirely unobstructed view of traffic decisively contributes to road safety. If the windscreen is dirty, hazards may be spotted dangerously late and, in the worst cases, not at all. By complementing wiper blade performance with Windscreen Clear, unhindered visibility is assured. What your customers should know: When stubborn dirt is stuck on the windscreen, only a powerful cleaning agent in the windscreen washer system is of any use. It must not, however, freeze at low temperatures, nor be corrosive to any surfaces with which it comes into contact when in use. When the windscreen is coated with dirt, the wiper blades tend to spread the dirt across the surface rather than actually remove it. The only solution is a cleaning agent that is reliably effective at dissolving various types of dirt. The fan nozzles commonly employed in VW Group vehicles ensure that the cleaning agent is evenly sprayed across the large surface of the windscreen. Low viscosity is therefore required. 12

genuine vehicle fluids To prevent the cleaning agent from making matters worse, however, it must also have a sufficiently effective anti-freeze component, so that it does not freeze in the washer fluid tank, the connecting hoses, the spray nozzles or on the windscreen itself. If the cleaning agent ends up freezing on the windscreen, the resulting ice and smearing effects it will impair visibility even further. Additionally, the cleaning fluid must not damagingly affect paint, wiper blade rubbers, washer system parts and other materials with which it either must or could come into contact, since it would otherwise cause them to wear out, thus leading to unnecessary additional costs. by calcium build-up, so a high degree of hard water stability can prevent this. By the way, even the windscreen cleaning agent s scent is more important than one might imagine. After all, it eventually ends up pouring over the ventilation ducts that lead into the vehicle s interior. If the product has an unpleasant or even acrid odor, it can disturb the driver s concentration at just the wrong moment. Headlamp housings in particular are subject to the possibility of stress cracking, if the windscreen cleaning agent contains the wrong ingredients. The cleaning agent is also subject to special requirements due to the fan nozzles that are used in most VW Group vehicles. The cleaning fluid must not cause these fan nozzles to ice up or gradually become clogged with deposits. Low viscosity at every atmospheric temperature is therefore important. Such clogging is caused 13

windscreen clear Genuine Windscreen clear is the perfect solution Our Genuine Windscreen clear is available both as concentrate (antifreeze to -70 C or -95 F) and as a ready-mix product (antifreeze to -21 C or -6 F). We also offer a product version that is strictly for summer use, which has a higher proportion of surfactants. The two all-season products come in variety of container sizes, including small retail-size bottles. They all possess the same exceptionally strong cleaning power, and easily remove even waxy or oily residue from the windscreen. The concentrate s antifreeze rating is also higher than that of many competitors products, making it extremely effective. Even when mixed with water at a ratio of 1:2, it has an antifreeze rating of -16 C (3 F), which means that the product quickly pays for itself. In 2005, we had the accuracy of these antifreeze ratings independently tested and confirmed in 2005 by DEKRA Umwelt GmbH. At the same time, the material compatibility of Genuine Windscreen clear concentrate was also tested. The results: No stress cracking of PMMA and PC headlamps and lenses was exhibited, no changes to the tested surfaces of wiper blade rubbers, and unlimited compatibility with the four tested paints. The assessment of the product s cleaning effectiveness was equally definitive. According to DEKRA Umwelt, Genuine Windscreen clear concentrate from Volkswagen AG demonstrates very good cleaning performance when faced with the independent testing institute s own all-season testing dirt. The Windscreen clear products also demonstrate a high degree of material compatibility, since they do not contain any non-ionic surfactants. The manufacturing of these cleaning fluids are subject to strict Volkswagen Group regulations that comply with laws governing the environmental compatibility of washing and cleaning agents. Further key product characteristics include a high degree of hard water stability, suitability for use with fan nozzles (guaranteed to -15 C or 5 F), and the prevention of calcium or other deposits. The scents of Genuine Windscreen clear are just right as well, by the way: the pleasant citrus scent of the concentrate product and the Cool & Fresh scent of the ready-mix product.
