STATE INFORMATION - OVERDIMENSIONS (LENGTH) UPDATED JANUARY 29, 2003 All information was gathered from DOT websites, handbooks, telephone conversations, etc. Any information in this booklet is subject to change and vary according to updated state regulations. The State Dot Offices are the official and final word on whether permits are obtainable.

ALABAMA : This state has a 57 foot trailer law. This means that all loads are legal if they are loaded on a trailer 57 0 or less and have no overhang. Alabama does not have an overall length stipulation; they look at the length of the trailer only and the length of the load. If any load has a rear overhang of more than 5 0; a permit is required (except listed exemptions; see below). Ex. : If you have a load of fabricated steel and it is loaded on a 57 0 trailer or less and you have no overhang off the end of the trailer, then no permit is required. However : If you have the same load but the load length is 58 0 loaded on a 57 0 trailer, even with 1 0 rear overhang, you will require a permit. Exemptions : All exemptions must operate as if a permitted load and are permitted travel daylight hours only. There are no overhang restrictions on the following exemptions. Lumber if overlength only Raw pipe, structural steel (fabricated steel requires a permit), light poles, and logs. ALASKA : Overall legal length is 75 0 3 o front overhang is legal and 4 0 rear overhang. For further length requirements for the State of Alaska, give them a call; they have very specific designated routes and specifications : ARIZONA : Length of a semitrailer operating within a truck tractor-semitrailer combination or a truck tractor-semitrailer-forklift combination shall not exceed 57 06. The OVERALL legal length of a vehicle transporter and the semitrailer shall not exceed 75 0, this applies to the Interstate Highway only. For non-interstate, if the length of a semitrailer is more than 53 0, the overall length of a truck tractor-semitrailer combination shall not exceed 65 0. Legal overhang : 3 0 beyond the foremost part 6 0 beyond the rear bed or body of the trailer. NOTE : Exemptions : If a truck tractor-semitrailer combination or other combination exceeds any of the above, a permit is required. The limitations as to length of vehicles and loads as prescribed above, do not apply to a load on a pole trailer when transporting poles, pipes or structural material that cannot be dismembered.

Any pole, pipe or other material exceeding 80 0 in length shall not be transported without obtaining a permit, regardless of the type of trailer in which it is being hauled. ARKANSAS If a semitrailer or trailer does not exceed 53 06, there is no overall length restriction, and the vehicle is in compliance with the law. If a semitrailer or trailer exceeds 53 06 but the overall length does not exceed 60 0 (sixty feet), the vehicle is is compliance with the law. When a semitrailer or trailer exceeds 53 06 and the overall length exceeds 60 0, and the trailer length cannot be reduced, the following provisions apply : a. A permit is required before the combination of vehicles can make a movement. b. If the overall length does not exceed 90 0 overall, the vehicle may run at any time on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis by obtaining a permit. c. If overall length exceeds 90 0, the vehicle may run on daylight hours only; no night travel and/or holiday travel will be allowed. Overhang : Front : 3 0 legal ( note : a permit will not be issued for any vehicle with a front overhang in excess of 20 0.) Rear : 4 0 legal beyond the rear of the combination Exemptions : Length limitations do not apply to vehicles operated in the daytime when transporting poles, pipes, machinery or other objects of a structural nature which cannot be dismembered. Other exemptions : Forestry machinery is exempt from width and height limitations`; however, the machinery must be moved off the interstate highway. Hay bales are exempt if 10 o wide or less. CALIFORNIA : North Region South Region The state of California looks largely upon the trailer length and kingpin settings when reffering to legal or not legal. For a more indept explanation of the overlength laws within California, REFER TO TRUCK ROUTE CLASSIFICATION ATTACHED (Appendix A). General Rule : No vehicle shall exceed a length of 40 0 except under the following conditions : A.) A combination of vehicles ( tractor truck semitrailer) is legal to an overall length of 65 0. B.) A combination of a truck tractor semitrailer and trailer combination (b-train) shall not exceed 75 0 if the length of the semitrailers nor the trailer does not exceed 28 06. C.) Front overhang 3 0 D.) Rear Overhang 4 0

Exemptions and Conditions : California Inspections Unit 1. a 40 0 limitation does not apply to a semitrailer when being towed by a motor truck or truck tractor if the distance from the centre of the kingpin to the centre of the rearmost axle, for semitrailer with two or more axles, does not exceed 40 0. For semitrailers having one axle, this distance is 38 0. 2. The national network requirements are incorporated into California Law and states that there is not overall length limit on the national network and terminal access routes in accordance with the following : the length of the semitrailer in exclusive combination with a truck tractor does not exceed 48 0. A semitrailer not more than 53 0 in length satisfies this requirement when configured with two or more rear axles, the rear most of which is located 40 0 or less from the kingpin or when configured with a single axle which is located 38 0 or less from the KP. 3. Poles, timber, pipes, structural materials, aircraft assemblies and tanks not exceeding 80 0 are exempt from length laws. If hauling poles, there is a limit of 3 per load, otherwise a permit is required.
