ODENSE MARITIME TECHNOLOGY November 2017 Defense Special Vessels Container Bulk Tank Shipyard Advisory
OMT Profile EXPERIENCE Building on 90 years excellence in ship design from Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark Design experience from a multitude of different vessels, including more than 70 containerships and 150 bulk carriers designed for and constructed at Asian shipyards INNOVATION Design and construction of advanced and cutting edge containerships for various leading container vessel operators Commercial shipbuilding knowledge and experience is applied to state of the art military design EXPERTISE Around 100 experienced maritime professionals in ship design, engineering and project execution Organisation comprises dedicated designers in OMT offices in Denmark, China, India and Canada 3
Development of autonomous solutions for the maritime industry Green Ship of the Future Partners in Green Ship of the Future have developed a 2,500 TEU feeder containership with 30% less CO 2 emissions compared to typical design. This based on autonomy level 3 (on board remote control). AL3 3
Autonomous ferries for Danish crossings how to implement? Bjørn Moving, Development Specialized Vessels, Odense Maritime Technology For several years it has been considered to standardize the local ferries in Denmark but this has not proven possible in practice. Yet with an increased interest from politicians to have flexible and frequent local ferry services with environmentally friendly vessels, the foundation is now here to implement modular ferries that can pave the way for autonomous operation. OMT has in collaboration with other parties developed a concept that makes modular ferries with autonomous operation accessible in a very near future. OMT intends to built a test- and replacement ferry for that purpose. AL? 4
Modular ferries how to implement? Replacement of the whole fleet? 5
Start building of a Replacement Ferry fitting the Danish ferry route net Overview of approx. 60 Danish ferry routes From statistics, the ferries can be divided in 3 sizes: Up to 9 cars and 50 passengers 10-20 cars and 98-147 passengers 26-36 cars and 148-246 passengers 6
Specifications for a Replacement Ferry Statistics indicates that a middle size ferry will cover most of the routes Preliminary main particulars is chosen: Length 39.0 m (128ft) Width 11.6 m ( 38 ft) Max draft: 2.3 m ( 7.5 ft) Max service speed: 11 knots Car capacity: 19 Trailers of 16.5 m 2 + 12 cars Max number of passengers: 120 Indoor seats 75 7
Replacement Ferry The replacement ferry shall be fitted for most of the existing shore berths Dismountable car ramps will be arranged for the replacement ferry and bow shape to be considered in connection with this. 8
Replacement Ferry The replacement expected to be on the water Q1-Q2-2019 Expected 100 days a year available for R&D performed by the universities. 9
Testing of Replacement Ferry will be basic for Modular (Standard) Ferries The Future Modular ferry delivered in sizes 38m 56m length Modularity will also include: Accommodation Level of hybrid power generation Visor for more open water routes Level of autonomy 10
Shore berth arrangement Standardisation necessary SHORE BERTH ARRANGEMENT Ramp arrangement ashore (not on vessel) Auto mooring Auto battery charging 11
Development concept Research & development platform for the universities Several institutes have confirmed their interest to work on this test platform: DTU Maritime DTU Mechanics DTU Electro DTU Compute DTU Energy DTU Management 12
Research & development headlines The appropriate vessel Zero Emission 13
Research & development headlines The rational and effective design & production 14
Research & development headlines Autonomous vessel DTU-OMT & Danish Maritime Authority will collaborate to have a test route arranged 15
Research & development headlines Autonomous vessel With future ferry on-demand concept, the vessel is operated at the highest autonomy level without crew and local people trained in managing emergencies and incidents 16
Autonomous ferry is really a Wireless Cable Ferry Ferry on demand Small islands North- and South Koster in Sweden In winter season an unmanned cable ferry that can be operated by the local islanders with short instruction course 17
Gradual development from manual control to fully autonomous The level of autonomy will increase as the number of standardized ferries come into service Manual Control Support functions Remote Control AL1 AL2 AL3 Replacement ferry 2 crew members Distant Control Partly Autonomous AL4 AL5 Standard ferries 1 crew member Fully Autonomous AL6 0 crew members 18
Autonomous navigation Standardisation will ease autonomous navigation that will release resources The replacement ferry will be prepared for easy modification to 1-man crew: The ferry wheel house will be circular for 360 degree view and for easy direction swift Beside engine and manoeuvre control, deck equipment as ramps, throwing of anchor operational from wheelhouse Manoeuvre control station at rescue zone For future with full autonomous ship, the engine room is prepared for dividing into two isolated compartments 19
Autonomous navigation Fully Autonomous vessel will release wheelhouse for other purpose 20
