Page1 POWER for AIRCRAFT GSE 400Hz FREQUENCY CONVERTERS SD40 Series Ground power systems for Aircraft The SD series, solid state frequency converters are derived from our long experience in the design and manufacture of rectifiers, inverters, UPS systems and frequency converters. Our range of GSE outdoor 400Hz frequency converter products are constructed in rugged all weather resistant enclosure suitable for military airfield, airports, Naval, off shore platform and other application where fixed (FGPS) or mobile (GPU) point of use power for aircraft and helicopters is required. We also have indoor versions of 400Hz frequency converters designed for use in maintenance hangars, avionics workshops, hard shelters, technical centres and simulator applications. We can also supply a combination converter design with 400Hz output of 90kVA, 120kVA or 180kVA and with an additional 28V DC 600 Amps output, constructed in mild steel or in a stainless steel enclosure with ingress protection of IP55 for use with Helipads on board drilling ships, off-shore oil & gas platforms and other Naval vessels. Our AC to DC converters can connect to normal 50Hz or 60Hz power source and produces a highly stable 28.5V DC output for helicopter and aircraft engine starting and for the essential battery charging to conserve the energy in the on board batteries. The DC converter is supplied as a towable mobile unit or as a fixed indoor or outdoor construction. We also supply flexible 400Hz and 28V DC cables, 400Hz and DC aircraft power connectors, reeling systems and service pits for stowing the cables that deliver point of use power to all types of aircraft and helicopters, the design layout allows for easy and safe maintenance. Solid state frequency converters The SD series all weather version of our compact 400Hz ground power units can be fixed to the gantry of a passenger loading bridge or can be hung underneath the walkway, the vertically configured systems can be installed conveniently close to the aircraft parking position to provide a very flexible point of use power service for all types of aircraft. The SD series of frequency converters is available in sizes from 60kVA to 90kVA with a single output as standard execution, the 90kVA frequency converter is also available with an optional second output contactor. The 120kVA, 150kVA, 180kVA and 200kVA frequency converters are supplied with two output contactors in standard execution to suit the wide bodied aircraft. The 180kVA is delivered with two 90kVA outputs and is configured so that two 180kVA converters can support the A380 ground power requirements.
Page2 Indoor versions of the SD series of frequency converters in all the kva sizes are available for installation in aircraft maintenance hangars, avionics workshops, technical and simulator centres and in the aircraft manufacturing and testing facilities. Our SD series 400Hz frequency converter ground power unit is designed for connecting to the normal 3 phase 50Hz (or 60Hz) mains power source and delivers an output of 200V 3 phase 400 Hz power to the aircraft through a single contactor output stage in the sizes up to 90kVA or through a circuit breaker when used indoors. The higher powered frequency converter ground power units are supplied with two output circuit breakers, interlocks and with two contactors for the outdoor versions. All of the converters can be supplied with an input cable with length as specified by the purchaser. We will also supply the converter with a length of 400Hz special flexible cable with the control and signalling cores and terminated within the aircraft power connector. Our point of use frequency converter ground power system is only switched on when the aircraft needs the power. Power to the aircraft from the converter is only possible with the power connector inserted into the aircraft. Removal of the connector will stop the converter so power is only consumed when it is needed. The SD series of frequency converters can be supplied with an optional built in NBT feature that allows the converter to synchronise with the on board aircraft power system so the lights, air conditioning system and the avionics continue operating during the change over from aircraft power to the external converter power. The SDM-M series all weather converter can be supplied on a trailer as a versatile mobile unit (GPU) with 400Hz output up to 180kVA and as an option can be configured as a combination converter with a secondary output of 28V DC 600A. Solid state static converter GPU v Diesel engine driven GPU The escalating cost of diesel fuel for engine driven 400Hz GPU's has highlighted the very significant cost advantages of using our SD Series solid state electric/ electric frequency converter solution as a more cost effective alternative point of use power source. The obvious advantages: no diesel fuel cost bills, no refuelling time, no fuel spillage or leakage risk, no pollution smell of fuel, no ignition fire risk, no air pollution from engine exhaust fumes, no high audible noise. no battery to be recharged, no battery failure risk. no engine cranking start time, no engine parts or repairs, no oil consumption, no wear and tear of moving parts, no vibration, maintenance once a year, simple "on" "off" controls, the electric/electric converter can only be started when the aircraft power connecter is inserted in the aircraft, only consumes power when connected to the aircraft, high efficient use of electricity, no wasteful warm up time,
Page3 Point of use 400Hz mobile ground power The "point of use" mobile, all electric, ground power system is very energy efficient. The frequency converter is only switched on when needed and switched off when the aircraft starts its engines. This point of use mobile, towable 400Hz frequency converter is simply connected to the normal 50Hz or 60Hz mains power without the need for any special cable. The mobile converter is a versatile and convenient means of providing 400Hz ground power for aircraft when compared with the earlier generation concepts of centralised 400Hz systems on older airports that operate large converters in parallel drawing continuous power from the mains in anticipation of an incoming aircraft docking to connect to the distribution circuit.
