Follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation.. Introduction The blow off valve eases drum change-out on Nordson Series 5000 55-gallon drum melters by allowing an operator to inject air below the platen with the turn of a switch. The air prevents a vacuum from forming under the platen and eases the removal of the platen from the drum when the elevator control is in the UP position. The blow off valve in this installation kit is installed in a platen heater pad and replaces a unit s existing blow off valve.. low Off Valve Installation Use these procedures to replace an existing blow off valve with the new blow off valve in this kit. Refer to the drum melter manual as necessary for component illustrations. Preparing for Installation Follow this procedure to prepare the unit for blow off valve installation.. If there is a drum in the unit, remove it by following the drum removal instructions in the drum melter manual.. Place a heat-resistant support on the frame base below the platen to allow access to the platen heater pads. 3. Use the elevator control to lower the platen onto the support. 4. Press the STOP push-button on the electrical enclosure front panel; then place the main disconnect switch in the OFF position. WRNING: Risk of electrical shock. low Off Valve Retrofit Kit Preparing for Installation (contd) WRNING: System or material pressurized. Relieve pressure. Failure to observe may result in serious burns. 6. Set the air pressure regulator to 0 bar/psi (fully counterclockwise); then disconnect the air supply from the unit. 7. Move the elevator control to the UP position to bleed all pneumatic pressure from the system. Removing the low Off Valve and Heater Pad Follow this procedure to remove the old blow off valve and heater pad. The new blow off valve will be installed in a new heater pad. WRNING: Wear long-sleeved, heat-protective clothing, safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves.. See Figure. Remove and discard the follower plate cover (9). Retain the screws.. Remove the blow off valve and plug the hole (8). 3. Remove the PTFE joint sealant () and clean the follower plate (7). 4. Disconnect the heater wires from the heater pad opposite the T-handle (); then remove the heater pad. Retain the screws. 5. Remove the flange screw (6) opposite the T-handle. 6. Using the screws removed in steps and 5, attach the drill template (5) to the flange (3) and drill two 7. mm (0.8 in.) holes (4) in the flange. 37 56C 999 Nordson Corporation

4 low Off Valve Retrofit Kit Installing the Heater Pad and low Off Valve Follow this procedure to install the new heater pad and blow off valve.. See Figure. Place PTFE joint sealant () on the new heater pad (4).. Install the heater pad using the screws removed earlier. Hand-tighten the screws. 3. Reconnect the heater pad heater wires. 4. Mount the adapter plate () on the flange using the hex nuts (6) and the screws and washers (5) from the kit. Hand-tighten the nuts, screws, and washers. 5. ttach the new blow off valve (7) to the adapter plate using the screws, lock washers, and flat washers (3) from the kit. Follow these steps to tighten the heater pad screws: a. Restore electrical power to the unit and allow the unit to reach about 77 C (350 F). WRNING: Risk of electrical shock. Disconnect equipment from line voltage before servicing. b. Turn the unit off and disconnect and lock out electrical power to the unit. 8 low Off Valve Retrofit Kit Making the ir Line Connections Follow this procedure to modify the existing air line connections and to add the new air line tubing and hose from the kit. CUTION: Do not overcoat fittings when applying PTFE paste. Overcoating can cause PTFE paste to enter the air lines and clog the air regulator or preset regulator. Use Figure 5 to make the air line modifications and connections. Lightly coat all male taper pipe thread connections with PTFE paste. Cut items 8 and 9 to the lengths specified in Figure 5. Restore electrical power to the system and turn the system on by moving the applicator circuit breaker to the ON position.. Re-establish the air supply to the system, then set the air regulator to no less than 4.4 bar (60 psi). 3. Check for and correct any air leaks in the pneumatic system. 4. low Off Valve Retrofit Kit 3. Platen Removal Using the low Off Valve Use this procedure to change out a drum using the blow off valve. Refer to the drum melter manual for illustrations.. llow the unit to reach operating temperature. CUTION: Risk of platen seal damage. Do not continue with this procedure until the unit is at operating temperature.. Place the PUMP OFF/ON switch in the OFF position. 3. Turn the PLTEN REMOVL switch to the ON position. 4. Place the elevator control in the UP position. ir will flow from the blow off valve and the platen will begin to rise. 5. When the platen is out of the drum, turn the PLTEN REMOVL switch to the OFF position. 6. If desired, place a new drum in the unit by following the instructions in the drum melter manual. 4. Troubleshooting Use these troubleshooting procedures if the blow off valve is not working properly.. Set the air pressure regulator to 0 bar/psi.. Disconnect the air line from the blow off valve elbow fitting. 3. Slowly restore the air pressure to.38 bar (0 psi); then rotate the PLTEN REMOVL switch clockwise and slowly move the elevator control to the UP position. ir flows from the air line: normal indication. Reconnect the air line, return the elevator control to neutral, and go to step 4. No air flows from the air line: possible blockage at the PLTEN REMOVL switch or bad air line connection. low Off Valve Retrofit Kit 4. Troubleshooting (contd) 4. Reset the air pressure regulator to 0 bar/psi. Disconnect the large hose from the blow off valve. 5. Slowly restore the air pressure to.38 bar (0 psi): ir flows from the hose: normal indication. Reconnect the hose and go to step 6. No air flows from the hose: defective preset regulator or bad air line connection. Repair or replace the preset regulator or correct the bad air line connection. 6. Reset the air pressure regulator to 0 bar/psi. Disconnect the air line tubing from the top of the blow off valve. 7. Slowly restore the air pressure to.38 bar (0 psi): ir flows from the air line: normal indication. Reconnect the air line and go to step 8. No air flows from the air line: possible blockage at the 3-way piloted valve or blow off valve switch or bad air line connection. Clear the blockage at the 3-way piloted valve or blow off valve switch or correct the bad air line connection. 8. If possible, visually inspect the bottom of the platen for adhesive that may be blocking the blow off valve air outlet. Remove any adhesive blocking the air outlet. 9. If none of these troubleshooting procedures resolves the problem, set the air pressure regulator to 0 bar/psi, shut off the main air supply source, remove the blow off valve and clean or rebuild it, then reinstall it. 37 56C 999 Nordson Corporation
