GENERAL Carrier s commercial air handler ultra-violet germicidal lamps are designed to kill odor causing mold and fungus that may develop in the wet evaporator section of an HVAC unit. The high output, low temperature germicidal lamps are installed in the evaporator section of HVAC unit, and are pointed directly at the evaporator coil and condensate pan. The short wave length ultra-violet band light inhibits and kills mold, fungus, and microbial growth. The Carrier germicidal lamps have been specifically designed and optimized for 40 to 45 F, high-humidity operation in a moving airstream, inside an HVAC unit. The Carrier UV-C germicidal lamps have output ratings at 45 F in a 400 fpm airflow of 120 microwatts/cm 2 at a 1 meter range. Two service personnel are required for installation procedure. Germicidal lamp installation requires a separate, dedicated source of power. 40RM007, 40RM,RMQ,RMS008, 40RM,RMQ,RMS012 40RM014, 40RM,RMQ,RMS016, 40RM,RMS024 40RM028,034 AIR HANDLER UNIT PACKAGE USAGE UNIT ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS FIXTURE QUANTITY PART NUMBER 115 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX001A00 208/230 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX002A00 277 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX003A00 115 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX004A00 208/230 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX005A00 277 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 2 CRDBLFIX006A00 115 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 3 CRDBLFIX004A00 208/230 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 3 CRDBLFIX005A00 277 vac, 70-85 W, 50/60 Hz 3 CRDBLFIX006A00 Manufacturer reserves the right to discontinue, or change at any time, specifications or designs without notice and without incurring obligations. INSTALLATION Location The germicidal lamps are installed in the evaporator section, downstream of the cooling coil. A unit flange opposite the coil face is provided for mounting the germicidal lamps. A field-supplied junction box with a switch should be mounted to the exterior side of the corner channel of the fan section. The conduit hole in the rear of the junction box is aligned with the factory-provided knockout in the unit cabinet. Refer to Fig. 1 for lamp and junction box installation locations. See Fig. 2 for accessory dimensions. Verify site can be supplied with the necessary power requirements. Ensure that there is adequate clearance for service and bulb replacement. Installation Perform the following procedure to install the germicidal lamps: 1. Turn off all power to unit. Remove access panels to evaporator section. 2. Ultra violet light may damage certain plastics and exposed non-uvc protected wires. Wrap exposed plastic and wiring with aluminum tape or use metal conduit. A separate, dedicated, source power supply must be routed to the accessory germicidal lamp power supply per applicable codes. Unit wiring and control box connections should not be used. Refer to the Air Handler Unit Package Usage table for electrical characteristics of power supply. Power source must be a suitable fused, grounded, protected source with the correct voltage. Other voltages will permanently damage the germicidal lamp. It is recommended that the germicidal lamps be operated continuously. Wire per Table 1. Table 1 Wiring Recommendations WIRING Power Neutral Ground COLOR Black White Green 3. Place cardboard over the coils for protection. 4. Factory-supplied 90 degree, 18 gage (minimum), galvanized steel angles are required. Two angles are provided per accessory germicidal lamp. All angle dimensions and hole placements are shown in Fig. 3 and 4. Angles are required to attach germicidal lamps to unit mounting flange. 5. Install junction box. See Fig. 1. Install a 1/2-in. conduit nipple through the rear of the junction box at the knockout in the corner channel of the unit. Cut a 1/8- in. diameter hole in the unit insulation at the conduit nipple penetration for wire routing. Drill and install a no. 10 screw to provide additional support for junction box. Provide disconnect switch on junction box. Seal conduit penetration into unit at conduit nipple to prevent air intrusion. 6. Remove bulb from germicidal lamp if attached. DO NOT TOUCH GLASS ON BULB. Handle non-glass parts only. Remove cover from germicidal lamp. 7. Attach germicidal lamp to steel angle. Align top hole in rear of germicidal lamp with hole in steel angle. Bottom of germicidal lamp is the side with the UL label. Use a flat washer and no. 10 self-tapping screw to attach germicidal lamp to steel angle. See Fig. 4. Repeat to attach second angle to germicidal lamp using no. 10 self-tapping screw and washer. Two angles are used per accessory. Repeat procedure for all other germicidal lamps. 8. Using the angles attached to the germicidal lamps as a template, mark two drill holes on the unit mounting flange for the fixture furthest from the junction box. Refer to Fig. 5-7 for fixture locations specific to each unit size. Using no. 10 self-tapping screws, attach the fixture mounting angles (installed on the germicidal lamps in Step 7) to the mounting flange. Place second germicidal lamp adjacent to previously installed germicidal lamp. Verify that fixture is in correct position (conduit nipple can connect fixtures). Mark the mounting angle hole positions on flange. Drill holes and attach second germicidal lamp. Repeat procedure for remaining accessory germicidal lamps. Be careful not to drill into coil, refrigerant lines, or other objects inside the HVAC unit. Damage to unit can result. 9. Connect adjacent germicidal lamps with 1/2-in. conduit nipples and locknuts. 10. Wire germicidal lamps in series to junction box. See Fig. 8 for wiring to a single accessory. See Fig. 9 for multiple accessory applications. All field wiring external to the germicidal lamps and internal wiring within 3-in. of the germicidal lamp entrance and exit must be UV resistant, outdoor duty, 14 gage Romex wire or be jacketed in 1/2-in. conduit. Internal wiring further than 3-in. from germicidal lamp entrance or exit does not require the Romex protective sleeve. Reseal insulation hole at junction box wire penetration with a piece of aluminum tape. NOTE: Route all wiring through fixtures when possible. 11. Test all circuits. 12. Replace germicidal lamp covers and re-install bulbs. DO NOT TOUCH GLASS ON BULB. Grasp the bulb only by the bases (non-glass part). Clean the bulb using a lint free wipe and isopropyl alcohol. Fingerprints on bulb will permanently damage bulb. Push bulb into place until seated and rotate 90 degrees until two distinct clicks are heard. 13. Ensure safety equipment is being worn. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND COVER SKIN. Stand a safe distance away from bulb for viewing. Return power to unit. Accessory ultra-violet bulbs should glow with a blue hue. Turn off power when proper operation is verified. If bulb does not glow, check wiring, safety interlock, or replace bulb. 14. Remove cardboard placed in Step 3. 15. Re-install access panels. Turn on power to unit. 16. Affix the ultra-violet light hazard warning labels provided to the outside of the unit, in plain sight, on the access panels. See Fig. 10. Replace label when worn. 2
