CLEAN DIESEL TDI: POWERFUL. EFFICIENT. CLEAN. Volkswagen TDI and Audi TDI vehicles offer fuel economy improvements of 30 percent in real world driving conditions over similarly powered gasoline engine Nitrous oxide emissions are reduced by 90 percent with selective catalytic reduction systems on all Volkswagen Group TDI vehicles The Volkswagen Touareg V6 and Audi Q7 TDI EPA mileage ratings of 25 mpg highway and 26.4-gallon tanks mean fewer fill ups on long commutes with up to 600 miles per tank The Audi Q7 3.0 TDI uses only about 170 gallons of clean diesel to drive from New York to Los Angeles versus 240 gallons for a comparable gas engine. This is a 30 percent improvement. Clean Diesel TDI engines provide 50 percent more torque at lower RPMs for superior acceleration and propulsive power, three times the engine life and lower lifetime maintenance costs The 221 hp of the three-liter TDI that powers the Audi Q7 TDI provides about 80 hp of output per liter of displacement a level that just a few years ago was reserved for the sports car segment With acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.5 seconds the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Touareg V6 TDI, and the Audi Q7 TDI 3.0, offer the most affordable good clean fun on the road today
REMARKABLE EFFICIENCY. UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE. Here s how. Glow Plugs Diesel engines use compression not spark plugs to induce combustion. A glow plug is a specialized heating coil that helps advanced diesel engines start quickly. Without spark plugs, typically among the first parts to malfunction, maintenance costs are generally lower for diesel engines. Electronic Controls Computer-controlled high-pressure solenoid switches in advanced diesel engines allow precise amounts of fuel to flow from the injector to the cylinder at the moment of maximum compression (when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder) for improved efficiency. Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalytic converters reduce the levels of pollutants in exhaust gas. Our efficient clean converters reduce emissions by up to 90 percent by converting nitrogen oxide from the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water without forming any undesirable side products. The new Touareg V6 TDI is also equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter to reduce the entire bandwidth of emissions.
Common Rail Fuel Injection System In this fuel injection system, pressure generation and fuel injection components are separate from one another with pressure being generated continuously by an independent pump. This pressure is stored in the distributor rail or common rail. Lines connect all the cylinder injectors to the common rail in parallel ensuring all injectors have an uninterrupted supply of constant pressure. The injection quantity and timing are controlled using solenoid valves at the individual injectors. Advanced Combustion Chamber Configuration In an improved diesel engine design, the cylinder head is now shaped to provide the proper space for the fuel and air mixture to ignite and burn efficiently to create maximum power stroke. Turbocharging Turbochargers increase the air throughput of an engine by compressing the air required for combustion. Compared with a naturally aspirated engine with the same displacement, a turbocharged engine can produce higher power and torque, as well as being more efficient. (That s one reason why Volkswagen Group s Clean Diesel TDI vehicles are so fun to drive.) Ultra-Low Sulfur Fuel Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel is highly refined for clean, complete combustion and low emissions. It contains 97 percent less sulfur than low-sulfur diesel. (Meaning we all breathe easier.) The 2009 Jetta TDI is the 2009 Green Car of the Year according to Green Car Journal.
FUTURE FUELS. GREENER FUEL. GREATER ECONOMY. LEADING TODAY. TOMORROW. AND BEYOND. And we re not done yet. Clean Diesel TDI is the clean answer today, tomorrow and beyond. J.D. Power and Associates projects the new vehicle diesel market will triple in the coming years, reaching 15 percent of all sales by 2020 saving 17 billion gallons of fuel over the fleet s useful life. Looking beyond the horizon, it requires little imagination to see that alternative fuels like diesel will continue to be an important part of our future. At Volkswagen Group of America, we are taking a long-term and a shortterm approach to fuels. Our goal is a carbon-neutral car, but we are not letting that long-term goal distract us from improvements we can make right now. Our direct injection diesel technology TDI clean diesel dramatically reduces vehicle emissions today. While gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid The Jetta TDI broke the Guinness World Record in a 48 state, cross-country trip averaging more than 58 miles per gallon.
and fuel cell systems will drive mobility in parallel toward future solutions, the challenge lies in designing future carbon-neutral fuels that can be distributed via existing filling stations and used in existing vehicles. Diesel produced from biomass fuels answers that challenge. Volkswagen Research is working in partnership with a German University on a breakthrough project called Sunfuel, a next-generation biofuel that involves biomass-to-gas conversion. Biomass fuels are produced from diversified sources such as plant matter, agricultural waste and food processing byproducts. Once gas is generated from biomass, it can then be converted into diesel fuel for distribution. SunFuel is almost CO2-neutral and can be used to power all engines in the Volkswagen Group s current model range. When used as a fuel in conventional diesel engines, the high-quality SunFuel reduces particulate emissions and nitrogen oxides by nearly 30 percent even in older vehicles. These biomass fuels offer exciting potential. Our advanced power systems coupled with this futuristic fuel will one day make the zero emissions dream an everyday reality.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP. Environmental responsibility is one of Volkswagen Group of America s core values. Our customers expect us to offer safe, reliable, economical, high-quality vehicles. We also face the challenge of environmental responsibility with the goal of limiting the impact of our operations on the environment. Already a leader in the field of low-consumption, low-emission powertrains, our commitment also includes developing production capabilities for innovative fuels, with particular emphasis on the commercialization of second-generation biofuels capable of being distributed via the existing infrastructure and of being used in vehicles currently on the market today. In addition, another important technological focus is the reduction of criteria-pollutant emissions. We are now bringing integrated powertrain and aftertreatment systems into the market to help drastically reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile hydrocarbons and particulates.
