Quick facts: Bergen and Hordaland Quick facts Hordaland county: Aprox. population 500 000 Aprox. 800 buses Quick facts Bergen city: Aprox. population 270 000 Aprox. 500 buses
Interest organization that seeks to improve terms and conditions for developing and growing business across all energy sectors in the Hordaland region HOG Energi have achieved significant results with many important issues for the region such as: Development of infrastructure for natural gas Increased use of natural gas in public transport Gas buses in Bergen Gas ferries Natural gas in vessels LNG facility in Kollsnes Pipeline from Kollsnes to Mongstad raffineri

Hordaland County Council Responsible authority for public transport in the city of Bergen and Hordaland (Bus, Bergen Light Rail, boat, ferry) Skyss Administrative unit of Hordaland CC. responsible for planning, purchasing and marketing public transport services. Contracts for the operation of bus/boat/light rail routes are awarded to private traffic companies after tender competitions
Buses 762 buses (81 gas buses) 11 contracts Light trail 17 light trail wagons 1 contract Ferries and boats 20 contracts ~5000 daily trips and 120 000 daily travellers by bus and light trail in Bergen and surrounding areas (~90% of all travellers in Hordaland County)
Background: Hybrid Biogas Bus initiative Natural gas buses operative in Bergen from 2001 Hordaland County and HOG Energi enters partnership with BBB in 2009 New Light Rail opens in 2011 81 new buses purchased in 2012 Bergen City decides to build a biogas plant in 2010 Hordaland County Council decides that gas buses will run on biogas 2012 Regional authorities have a strategy to make the light rail the backbone of the transport system in Bergen, complementing with biogas buses
Hybrid Biogas Bus initiative BBB WP 6.7 Transmission: Preferably hybrid transmission Highlighted advantages: Constant load of engine Use of brake energy Charging batteries with biogas Increase of energy efficiency Our recommendation: Serial Hybrid which means only electric drive 12
Aim Improve the energy efficiency of biogas buses Contribute to make more optimal buses available to the market and for customers with the most advanced environmental requirements Price competitive buses compared to diesel alternatives that still dominate the bus market
Scope To develop and demonstrate serial hybrid technology for gas buses Test and measure energy efficiency and fuel consumption Test in hard road/topographic conditions and variation in stop frequency and situation that require quick shifts in acceleration up to the regular speed Evaluate and compare to other fuels and hybrid types where data may be available Collect feedback from the public Disseminate results to partners, public and the manufacturer

The Project An electric bus producing its own power from sewage made biogas EU-prosjekt - 2013-2014, one bus Transnova - 2013-2015, one bus Totalt budsjett: ca. 20 mill. NOK or 2,5 mill EUR
The bus
The bus specifications CNG engine: 206 kw (280hp) CNG tanks: 1460 liter Range : 350 km Batteries: Bus weight, empty: 610 V, 192 kw peak, 36 kwh 24 tons Total weight capasity: 36 tons Seats: 55 + driver Standees: 97 (teoretically) Bus length: 24 m
Driver s facilities No ticketing Like the ligth rail in Bergen, there will be no ticketing on board, just validators.
Vehicle length and weight dispensation The Norwegian public roads administration has granted dispensation to run 24 meters buses on line 2 Skyss is also considering other routes such as center- Kronstad. Skyss will identify physical measures that must be implemented before the buses will be put into regular traffic
Progress plan The construction of the buses is underway in Belgium and the first bus will see the light of day in Belgium in the spring 2014. After extensive testing and training of drivers and yard personnel, it is delivered to Bergen in mid- September 2014 HOG Energy is project manager for the project and will ensure that the experience with the buses being collected and distributed to the financial contributors, Transnova, partners of the EU, and to all the others in the transport sector who are closely following this pilot project in Bergen
Conclusions Demonstration projects are environmental measures in practice Partnerships across sectors triggers the power! Strong political support important Hybrid solutions will be of great strategic importance in the future Rigid public procurement process rules is a challenge Manufactures are conservative in relation to new ideas
