* For further information, contact Caterpillar Service Technology Group. Start By: a. remove counterbalance valves, travel motors and travel drives 1. Remove the counterbalance valve. See, "Disassemble And Assemble Counterbalance Valves" in this module. NOTE: Steps 2 through 16 are for the disassembly of the travel motor.
8. Remove disc (11) from the flange holder. NOTICE During removal of the pistons and cylinder block assembly from the flange holder, do not let the components fall apart. The piston assemblies should be reinstalled in their original bores in the retainer plate and cylinder block. 9. Remove piston and cylinder block assembly (12) from the flange holder as a unit. 10. Put identification marks on nine piston assemblies (13) as to their location in retainer plate (14) and cylinder block assembly (15). Remove piston assemblies (13) from retainer plate (14) and cylinder block assembly (15).
14. Remove shaft (23) from the flange holder. 15. Using a magnet, remove two steel balls (22) from the flange holder. 16. Remove two piston assemblies (24) and the two springs from the flange holder. NOTE: Steps 17 through 37 are for the disassembly of the travel drive. 17. Turn the travel drive over, and remove three plugs (25) from the cover for the travel drive. NOTE: The cover for the travel drive is held in position by a retaining wire which is wrapped around the circumference of the travel drive housing on the inside. Also, an o-ring seal is used between the cover and the travel drive housing. 18. Fasten the travel drive to tool (A) as shown. 19. Remove the plug from the side of the travel drive housing to gain access to retaining wiring (27). 20. Install two pipe fittings (26) of the correct size in the threaded plug holes in the travel drive cover. 21. Using a long bar, rotate the cover slowly until the end of retaining wire (27) is visible through the threaded plug hole in the side of the travel drive housing. Grab the end of the retaining wire with pliers. As the cover is slowly being turned, pull the retaining wire out from the threaded plug hole.
27. Remove four screws (36) and thrust plate (37) from the flange holder. 28. Remove sun gear (38) and four planetary gears (39) from the flange holder. 29. Remove retaining ring (40) from sun gear (38). 30. Remove four needle bearings (41), four floating bushings (42) and four thrust washers (43) from the flange holder. 31. Remove four socket head screws (45) from the flange holder. 32. Remove outer race (46) and oil seal (47) from the flange holder. 33. Remove ring nut (44) with tool (D).
2. Put flange holder (1) on a flat surface with the flange of the component at the bottom. NOTICE See "Assembly And Installation Of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals" in this module. NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals. 3. Install Duo-Cone seal (3) in flange holder (1) with tool (B). 4. Install angular bearing (2) on the flange holder. 5. Put the other half of Duo-Cone seal (3) in position on the half already installed. 6. Heat housing (4) to a temperature of 60 to 80 C (140 to 176 F), and install it over the flange holder (1). Install the housing until the shoulders of the housing make contact with angular bearing (2).
16. Install retaining ring (16) on sun gear (15). 17. Install four planetary gears (12) and sun gear (15) on the flange holder. 18. Install thrust plate (13) and four screws (14). Tighten the screws to a torque of 39 ± 49 N m (29 ± 36 lb ft). 19. Install holder (17) and three inner rings (18). Put clean hydraulic oil on three needle bearings (19), and install them on the holder. 20. Install drive gear (21). Install three planetary gears (20) on the holder. 21. Install thrust plate (22) on the holder.
28. Using a magnet, reinstall two steel balls (27) in the flange holder. 29. Install the two springs and two piston assemblies (28) in the flange holder. Put clean hydraulic oil on the components. 30. Put a thin coat of 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease on the lip of oil seal (10). Install shaft (29) in drive gear (21). 31. Install swash plate (30). Be sure the swash plate is aligned with steel balls (27). Also, push on the swash plate from side to side to be sure it can move on the steel balls at the fixed position. NOTICE The two collars used in the cylinder block assembly are a different size and shape. Be sure the collars are reinstalled in their original locations per the identification marks made on them at disassembly. 32. Install the collar, spring (33) and collar (32) in the cylinder block. Put the cylinder block in a press. Install a suitable size drive plate on collar (32), and compress spring (33) until retaining ring (31) can be installed.
37. Install o-ring seals (41) and (42) and back-up ring (43) on the brake piston. 38. Put clean hydraulic oil on the o-ring seals and the back-up ring on the brake piston. Install brake piston (46) in the bore of the flange holder with a soft faced hammer. 39. Install valve plate (47) and roller bearing (45). 40. Install eight springs (44) and locating dowel (50) in the flange holder. 41. Install three o-ring seals (49) and o-ring seal (48) in the flange assembly. 42. Install the counterbalance valve. See, "Disassemble And Assemble Counterbalance Valves" in the module. End By: a. install counterbalance valves, travel motors and travel drives
