Your Leading Provider for Koresin Top Intermediates Supplier The Operating Division Intermediates of the BASF Group develops, produces and markets the world's largest range of intermediates. The most important of the division's more than 600 products include amines, diols, polyalcohols and acids. Among other applications, intermediates are used as starting materials for coatings, plastics, pharmaceuticals, textile fibers, detergents and crop protectants. Koresin is a tackifier that is used mostly in manufacturing high performance truck and car tires, and in making technical rubber articles. BASF has extensive product expertise, having produced this particular resin from acetylene and p-t-butylphenol for more than 60 years. Round the world, Koresin is recognized by the tire industry as the current benchmark for very high and extremely long tackiness. BASF s customers include nearly all major tire manufacturers. In contrast to other tackifiers, Koresin does not affect the vulcanization speed of semi-finished products. Thanks to this, and to the high and long-term tackiness performance, users of Koresin benefit from improved process reliability. Another benefit of Koresin is that the compounds can be prefabricated and transported or stored for some time. The use of Koresin is not limited to manufacturing technical rubber articles and high performance tires: It is also used in tire re-treading. 4
Koresin a High Performance Tackifier Applications Outstanding Advantages Koresin is recommended for the production of rubber compounds which require a high degree of tackiness. It is therefore ideally suited to manufacturing the following products: all kinds of tires materials for re-treading conveyor belts, V-belts industrial hoses cable and roll coverings lining materials Koresin gives tire manufacturers in particular a range of advantages, as follows: high and long-term tackiness of rubber compounds made from natural or synthetic rubbers no effect on rubber vulcanization process physical characteristics of the vulcanized rubber remain nearly unchanged improved rubber extrudability improved resistance of rubber goods to ageing caused by exposure to heat and dynamic load better dispersion of carbon black process reliability unparalleled performance Specifications Test Criteria Specification Test Method Ubbelohde dropping point 140 160 C DIN 51801 Ring and ball softening point 135 150 C DIN 52011 Solubility in hydrocarbons soluble BASF method Properties Physical form yellow to brown pellets & powder Odor almost odorless Softening point (ball and ring/din 52011) 135 150 C Dropping point (Ubbelohde/DIN 51801) 140 160 C Density (20 C) 1.02 1.04 g/cm 3 Solubility soluble in hydrocarbons Storage stability 2 years 4
Trust in Superior Tackiness tack [N] 40 35 Koresin The tackiness curves of various tackifiers identify Koresin as the superior 30 short- and long-term tackifier. Similar results have been observed e.g. for 25 phenolic-formaldehyde-resin steel cord (100% NR) and side wall compounds (NR:BR:EPDM 35:35:30). Koresin customers round the world have for years confirmed the superior tackiness performance in all kinds of tires and rubber articles. 20 15 10 5 C5-hydrocarbon resin without tackifying resin coumarone-indene-resin 100 phr SBR 1500 13 phr Aromatic oil 45 phr Carbon black N765 17 phr Talcum 17 phr Liquid Polybutadiene 0 24 72 144 240 ageing [h] Influence on Vulcanization Another major advantage of Koresin compared to other tackifiers: Koresin has hardly any impact on the vulcanization behavior of the rubber mixes. In particular, the essential scorch time remains virtually unaffected if you add Koresin. Users therefore enjoy improved process reliability. The positive cure behavior of Koresin can be verified at various dosages of Koresin and in different polymer systems. torque (dnm) 1.750 1.500 1.250 1.000 0.750 0.500 0.250 no tackifier Koresin Highperformance PFR 0 10 20 30 40 50 time (min) Optimum Tackiness Performance BASF s customers appreciate Koresin as it improves workability, offering optimum tackiness behavior and outstanding long-term tackiness. Koresin prevents the vulcanization process from starting prematurely and thus improves process reliability: The compounds can be transported or stored for some time. 5
Innovation in Logistics to Meet Most Demanding Expectations BASF makes Koresin at its Ludwigshafen plant. The production facility is linked to a new pelletizing and packaging line that packs the pellets in 25-kilogram bags and bulk bags. Our customers may order Koresin for delivery on wooden or plastic pallets. The new carriers made of recycled plastics have been introduced in response to changes in customer demand: BASF uses the plastic pallets to meet the quality and reliability requirements of the tire and rubber industries. These pallets do not release any splinters that might be introduced into the rubber mix, where they might cause tiny cracks in the finished product. The plastic variant additionally weighs about 1.7 kilograms less than its wooden counterpart. 7
Broad Portfolio and Comprehensive Know-how Worldwide Availability BASF supplies a wide range of intermediates for the rubber industry and has the world s broadest portfolio of amines for rubber chemicals and the tire industry.
