Safety Recall Code: 34J1 Subject Gearbox Ventilation Hose Release Date October 03, 2018 Affected Vehicles U.S.A. & CANADA: Certain 2017-2018 Model Year Audi R8 Spyder & R8 Coupe Check Campaigns/Actions screen in Elsa on the day of repair to verify that a VIN qualifies for repair under this action. Elsa is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source. Campaign status must show open. If Elsa shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign. Problem Description Corrective Action Precautions Parts Information Code Visibility Owner Notification Additional Information Transmission fluid may leak from the gearbox ventilation hose during extreme racetrack driving/maneuvering situations. Leaking transmission fluid can contact hot engine parts, causing smoke and possibly a fire. Replace the single gearbox ventilation hose with a double ventilation hose that has a higher oil expansion volume. A hot oil odor and/or smoke may be noticeable if this issue is occurring. If this happens, customers are advised to stop driving immediately and contact an authorized Audi dealer without delay and make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected. Parts will be allocated prior to owner notification. If Allocated parts have been used, please contact the Parts Specialists via phone (800-767-6552), email (VWoAPartsSpecialists@vw.com) or chat/text with the VIN to order. On or about October 03, 2018, affected vehicles will be listed on the Inventory Vehicle Open Campaign Action report under My Dealership Reports (found on www.accessaudi.com & OMD Web). A list will not be posted for dealers who do not have any affected vehicles. On or about October 03, 2018, this campaign code will show open on affected vehicles in Elsa. On or about October 03, 2018, affected vehicles will be identified with this campaign code in the VIN Lookup tool at www.audiusa.com and on the NHTSA VIN lookup tool at www.safercar.gov. Campaign Work Procedure 34J1 Safety Recall NOTE Damages resulting from improper repair or failure to follow these work instructions are the dealer s responsibility and are not eligible for reimbursement under this action. This procedure must be read in its entirety prior to performing the repair. Due to variations in vehicle equipment and options, the steps/illustrations in this work procedure may not identically match all affected vehicles. Diagnosis and repair of pre-existing conditions in the vehicle are not covered under this action. When working during extreme temperatures, it is recommended that the vehicle be allowed to acclimate inside the shop to avoid temperature-related component damage/breakage. Repair Instruction Section A - Check for Previous Repair Enter the VIN in Elsa and proceed to the Campaign/Action screen. TIP On the date of repair, print this screen and keep a copy with the repair order. Confirm the Campaign/Action is open <arrow 1>. If the status is closed, no further work is required. Note the Applicable Criteria ID <arrow 2> for use in determining the correct work to be done and corresponding parts associated. Proceed to Section B October 2018 34J1 Page 7 of 27

Section B Ventilation Hose Inspection Carefully remove the oil reservoir cover <1> in direction of <arrows>. Do not jerk or pull it to one side. If a dual ventilation hose is present (as shown): o No further work is required. o Reinstall oil reservoir cover. o Proceed to Section H. If a single ventilation hose is present: o The ventilation hose requires replacement. o R8 Coupe (Criteria 01) - Proceed to Section C o R8 Spyder (Criteria 02) Proceed to Section D October 2018 34J1 Page 8 of 27

Section C R8 Coupe Air Filter Housing Removal (Criteria 01) Install the Side and Rear End Protective Covers. Remove Left and Right Side Engine Compartment Covers: NOTE Removal for the left side is illustrated. procedure for the right side is identical. The Remove the bolts <1, 5 and 6>. Remove the engine compartment cover upper section <2> upward in direction of <arrow>, and the mounts <4> will be pulled out of the guides <3> at the same time. October 2018 34J1 Page 9 of 27

If equipped: Disconnect the connector <3> for the engine compartment lamp. Open the quick release <1>. Support the rear lid or secure it from falling. Remove the rear lid strut from the body. Free up the engine compartment cover <2> and pull toward the rear. Reinstall rear lid strut. Removing and Installing Rear Lid Strut: Removing: Using a small screwdriver, lift the locking spring <1> slightly <arrow> and remove the strut <2> from the ball pin. Installing: Press the strut onto the ball pin until it audibly engages. October 2018 34J1 Page 10 of 27

Remove the Engine Compartment Trim Panel: Remove the bolts <2 and 3>. Remove the engine compartment trim panel <1> from the mounts <arrows> using the -VAG1344-. Remove the bolts <arrows>. Free up the wiring harness <2> and move the mount <1> with the antenna to the side. Remove the engine compartment trim panel and lay it on a soft surface. October 2018 34J1 Page 11 of 27

Remove Left Side Air Filter Housing: Loosen the clamp <3> and remove the air guide hose. Disconnect the connector <4> from the Mass Airflow Sensor 2 -G246-. Cut the tie wraps and free up the crankcase ventilation hose <2> on the air guide housing. Remove boot <1> from air filter housing. Remove the air filter housing bolts <arrows>. Remove the vacuum hose <5>. Proceed to Section E and replace ventilation hose. October 2018 34J1 Page 12 of 27

Section D R8 Spyder Air Filter Housing Removal (Criteria 02) Install the Side and Rear End Protective Covers. Remove Engine Compartment Lid: NOTE Removing the engine compartment lid will require a second technician. If equipped: Remove the bolts <arrows>. Free up the wiring harness <2> and move the mount <1> with the antenna to the side. October 2018 34J1 Page 13 of 27

Mark the engine compartment lid installation position for reinstallation. Remove the nut <3>. Loosen the nut <2> eight turns. Remove the engine compartment lid <1> with help from a second technician. Remove Left Side Air Filter Housing: Loosen the clamp <3> and remove the air guide hose. Cut the tie wraps and free up the crankcase ventilation hose <2> on the air guide housing. Remove the air filter housing bolts <arrows>. Disconnect the connector <4> from the Mass Airflow Sensor 2 -G246-. Remove the vacuum hose <5> and boot <1> from the air filter housing. Proceed to Section E and replace ventilation hose. October 2018 34J1 Page 14 of 27

Section E Replace Gearbox Ventilation Hose WARNING Exhaust and engine components can be extremely hot. Use heat resistant safety gloves and sleeves or allow the engine components to cool before working to avoid burn injuries. Disconnect left oil reservoir vent hose <1> from oil reservoir <2> and carefully position out of the way. Cut tie wrap <1> from hose <2>. Disconnect starter connector <1>. Disconnect parking lock actuator connector <2>. NOTE Engine shown removed for clarity. Disconnecting the connectors allows for easier removal and installation of the ventilation hose. Remove and discard clips <1> from wiring harness <2>. NOTE Engine shown removed for clarity. Using T-handle Hook -3438- at <arrow>, remove ventilation hose <1> upward off of transmission. Remove ventilation hose upward from vehicle. Remove bolt <1> from clamp for vacuum pipe, but do not remove clamp. October 2018 34J1 Page 16 of 27

Prepare the hose assembly as shown with new hose holders <1>. The right side hose <2> must be higher than the left side hose. The opening on the connection point <3> is facing away in this illustration. Part Number 0BZ.301.469.A N 103.150.02 Part Description Ventilation Hose Hose Holder Feed hose assembly from the top downward. Make sure hose is lined up parallel with the vent pipe on the transmission and install hose <1> onto transmission until it audibly engages. NOTE The ventilation hose must be routed under the starter and parking lock actuator wiring harnesses. October 2018 34J1 Page 17 of 27

Route starter connector wiring around ventilation hoses as shown. Connect starter connector <1>. NOTE Engine shown removed for clarity. Install tie wrap with clip onto the rib <1> on transmission. Part Number WHT.001.999 Part Description Tie Wrap w/ Clip Install tie wrap around hose and wiring harness. Tighten the cable just so the hose will not come into contact with the starter <circle>. NOTE Engine shown removed for clarity. TIP Position the tie wrap clip <A> as shown and feed the tie wrap with clip from the left side under the oil reservoir. Section F R8 Coupe Reassembly (Criteria 01) Install Left Side Air Filter Housing: Install vacuum hose <5> and boot <1> to the air filter housing. Connect the connector <4> to the Mass Airflow Sensor 2 -G246-. Install the air filter housing bolts <arrows> and torque to 8 Nm. Install crankcase ventilation hose <2> on the air guide housing and secure using new tie wraps. Part Number Part Description N 106.622.01 Tie Wrap (Qty. 2) Install air guide hose and clamp <3>. Install the Engine Compartment Trim Panel: If equipped: Install wiring harness <2> and install mount <1>. Install bolts <arrows> and torque to 4 Nm. October 2018 34J1 Page 21 of 27

Install engine compartment trim panel <1> onto the mounts <arrows>. Install the bolts <2 and 3> and torque to 9 Nm. Install the Side Engine Compartment Covers: Support the rear lid or secure it from falling. Remove the rear lid strut from the body. Install the engine compartment cover. Reinstall the rear lid strut. Removing and Installing Rear Lid Strut: Removing: Using a small screwdriver, lift the locking spring <1> slightly <arrow> and remove the strut <2> from the ball pin. Installing: Press the strut onto the ball pin until it audibly engages. The guide <4> on the engine compartment cover must engage in the mount on the front engine compartment cover <5>. Install the engine compartment cover <4> onto guides <3>. Install bolts <1> and torque to 8 Nm Install bolts <2> and torque to 6 Nm. Install the Oil Reservoir Cover: Carefully install the oil reservoir cover into the clips. WARNING Trapped engine oil increases the risk of fire. The oil reservoir cover must be placed clean on the oil reservoir oil filler tube up to the sealing lip. Remove the Side and Rear End Protective Covers. Proceed to Section H. Section G R8 Spyder Reassembly (Criteria 02) Install Left Side Air Filter Housing: Install vacuum hose <5> and boot <1> to the air filter housing. Connect the connector <4> to the Mass Airflow Sensor 2 -G246-. Install the air filter housing bolts <arrows> and torque to 8 Nm. Install engine compartment lid: NOTE Installing the engine compartment lid will require a second technician. Install the engine compartment lid according the markings made during removal with help from a second technician. Install nut <3> and torque nuts <2 and 3> to 23 Nm. If equipped: Install wiring harness <2> and install mount <1>. Install bolts <arrows> and torque to 4 Nm.
