1 Essential Information 1.2 Intended Use This product has been developed and tested for use under specific conditions. These are defined as the conditions of Normal Use. Use of this product outside of Normal Use may create a hazardous situation for the resident, operator or another party. To avoid this ensure the product is only used in accordance to the following conditions and all instructions in this document. Intended Resident: This bed is intended for a resident over 12 years old and taller than 139cm. Intended Environment: This product should only be used in a facility where medical supervision and care is available. This includes nursing homes and rehabilitation centres. This product must not be used in an acute care, hospital or domestic environment. Locked Castors: When operating the bed, with or without a resident, the bed castors must remain locked. 200kg Safe Working Load (SWL): The load on the bed can never exceed 200kg. This includes accessories, mattress and style packs. The load must be distributed evenly. 2 Minute Duty Cycle: Continuous operation of bed is limited to 2 minutes. An 18 minute cool down is required for every 2 minutes of continuous use. Annual Servicing: This product requires regular maintenance with a service check carried out by a qualified service technician. A service interval of 12 months is required to maintain good working order, and uphold the standard product warranty. Mattress: This product may only be used with mattresses of the size specified in Section 2.4. User Training: Operators of this product must be familiar with all conditions and parameters presented by this document. 6

Essential Information 1 1.3 Unintended Use The following list of potential misuses would constitute a significant hazard to the resident, operator or a third party. Please note this list outlines only some types of misuse which have been identified by the manufacturer. This is not a complete list and this product should only be used according to conditions of Normal use. Resident Transportation: This product is not intended for transportation of residents. The product should only be moved when in the transportation position. Multiple residents/visitors: This product cannot be used by multiple people. This includes sitting on the edge of the bed. Oxygen Rich Environment: This product is not suitable for use in an oxygen rich environment. Operations or Medical Procedure: This bed cannot be used to perform any serious medical procedure including operations or diagnostic procedures. 7

1 Essential Information 1.4 Transportation Position To move this product the operator must first place the bed in the transportation position. A step by step guide to moving your Stralus bed can be found in Section 3.3 The transportation position defines the following conditions. The bed may only be moved once all these conditions have been met. NOTE ON STABILITY AND BUMPS: This product has been designed to function on slopes of less than 10 degrees and be transported over bumps with a maximum height of 20mm. Transportation through environments outside this should not be attempted. If the operator is unsure of the environment they must consult their facility manager. Not Supporting a Resident: The bed is not supporting a resident or any other person in any manner. This includes lying, sitting, leaning or resting on the bed. Not Supporting a Load: The bed may not have any additional load other than mattress, linen, accessories and style packs when in the transportation position. Maximum Height: The bed is at its maximum height before transportation. Back and Head Rests are Flat: Both the back and leg rests must be completely flat. Lockout Activated (If Applicable): If the bed is equipped with an attendant control panel (ACP) the lock out should be enabled. Power cable is stored safely and correctly: See Section 3.2 Wall bumper is held up: Using provided tether, see Section 3.1 for use. 8

BACKREST UP / DOWN BED HEIGHT UP / DOWN 2.3 Style Pack The Stralus Care Bed is provided with a choice of Style Packs, designed to improve the resident s experience. The Style Pack consists of Headboard, Footboard and Sideboards. Please contact your Stralus representative for information on Style Pack options. Functions and Features 2 2.5 Castors and Brakes Every Stralus bed comes fitted with a braking castor system, containing the following modes: Total Brake Neutral Direction Lock Central Locking is controlled through the Brake Pedal at the foot end of the bed. 2.6 Battery (Optional) Your Stralus bed can be fitted with an optional battery backup pack, that allows operation without mains power. At your bed s Safe Working Load the battery will last for 15 minutes of continuous operation. This is enough to raise and lower the bed 8 times. The battery is automatically recharged when the bed is plugged back into mains power. Your battery will require 3 hours to be fully recharged. The battery can only be replaced by a trained service technician. For battery related faults please refer to the troubleshooting section. BRAKE PEDAL 13

2 Functions and Features 2.7 Wall Bumper Your Stralus bed is fitted with a removable Wall Bumper, to protect against damage to wall or bed. See Section 3.1 for usage instructions. 2.8 Electronics and Software This Stralus product contains an electrical actuator system which is approved for applications within medical facilities. This system complies with the EMC directive 2004/108/EC. Software used by this system has been designed in accordance with IEC 60601-1-4 (Software for Medical Devices). For more details please contact your sales representative. 2.9 Accessories WALL BUMPER A variety of Stralus accessories can be used with your bed. Only approved accessories are compatible. For a complete list of available accessories please contact your sales representative. 14

Using your Stralus Care Bed 3 3.1 Getting Started Before using your new Stralus Care Bed, please make sure the following items have been assembled correctly, as shown. Headboard Fasten Headboard to bed frame as shown; Footboard Fasten Footboard to bed frame as shown; 15

Using your Stralus Care Bed 3 Battery Charge If fitted with the optional battery, ensure the battery is fully charged before using your Stralus bed. The battery will charge automatically once the bed is plugged into mains power, allow a minimum of 3 hours to fully charge the bed for the first time. Wall Bumper If the bed is positioned with the Headboard against a wall ensure the bumper bar is resting on the floor against the wall to avoid a collision with the wall when the bed is lowered. When transporting the bed ensure the Wall Bumper is tethered to the bed frame as shown; WALL BUMPER TETHER WARNING - RISK OF ENTRAPMENT: The bed moves back and forth when raising and lowering. This is a potential entrapment or collision zone. Operators must monitor this area during use. 17

3 Using your Stralus Care Bed 3.2 Everyday Use WARNING - RISK OF ENTRAPMENT: To minimise chance injury or entrapment, please complete the following checks before operating bed. WARNING - RISK OF ENTRAPMENT: Resident may become entrapped as they move on the mattress surface. Ensure no accessory which may constitute a risk is left on the bed and that the resident is monitored regularly. Pre-Use Checklist Check brakes are engaged, and the bed is stable Check that entrapment zones specific to function are clear of any people, limbs, animals and/or objects. Refer to warnings on the following pages Check that the Safe Working Load is not exceeded by resident, mattress and accessories. Check resident is positioned correctly All parts of resident s body are to be within the bounds of the mattress Resident s head is at head end Resident is lying on centreline of the mattress Resident is lying face up 18

Using your Stralus Care Bed 3 Bed Height Bed height can be adjusted using the Hand Pendant Control. Back Rest Back Rest section of the bed can be raised using the Hand Pendant Control. 3 Using your Stralus Care Bed Knee Break Knee Break can be raised using the Hand Pendant Control. Using your Stralus Care Bed 3 Foot Position The foot section of the bed can be configured to go up with the knee break or remain lowered, as shown below; To raise foot section; Lift foot end and allow ratchet to click and lock foot height in place. To lower foot section; Lift foot end to release ratchet mechanism, then lower foot section to the base position. WARNING - RISK OF ENTRAPMENT: The operator should avoid reaching under the knee break or footrest when it is loaded. 21

3 Using your Stralus Care Bed Castors Instructions for use; To activate the brakes (total brake position), press the pedal at the foot end of the bed all the way down. To release the brakes (neutral position) move the pedal to centre position Cable Storage When storing or transporting your Stralus bed, ensure the power cable is stowed correctly, using the provided cable management bracket. To store cable, wrap it around the bracket ensuring that the end cannot hang free. To activate direction lock, lift the pedal up highest position. Using your Stralus Care Bed 3 3.3 Moving your Stralus Bed Before moving your Stralus bed, the operator must first ensure that the bed has been put into the Transportation Position (see Section 1.4). Before moving the bed, place the braking system in Neutral OR Direction Lock position. Note: Direction lock position will lock one castor at the head-end into a direction in-line with the side of the bed, to assist in steering the bed during transportation. Ensure the area under the bed and surrounding areas are clear of people or obstacles before transporting the bed. To manoeuvre the bed, push or pull at the locations shown in the image below left. Maintain a constant speed below walking pace when moving the bed. To stop the bed quickly, apply the brakes. When using Direction Lock push from the foot end. PUSH OR PULL THE BED AT THESE LOCATIONS DIRECTION LOCK CASTOR AT HEAD END 23

3 Using your Stralus Care Bed 3.4 End of Product Life Disposal of electronics, metals and plastics is governed by varying regional regulations. Consult your sales representative for the best practice and dispose of products responsibly. 24

Keeping your Bed Clean 4 In order to maintain consistent function and a healthy environment the bed should be cleaned regularly, and in accordance to the cleaning instruction below. Raise the Backrest and Knee Break to maximum position. Unplug the bed from mains power. Ensure all interconnecting cables remain plugged in during cleaning. Disinfect and wipe down bed frame using warm water and domestic detergents. Wipe down actuators with a clean damp cloth. Use a wet cloth to rinse bed, ensuring to remove all detergents. Dry all components. Reconnect main power, retract all actuators and store. Safety Notes: This product cannot be cleaned by an auto washer or water jet cleaner. Do not clean with a steam cleaner. Do not submerge bed frame or electrical parts. Do not use solvents, alcohol, petroleum products, bleach, caustic agents or chemicals which are highly acidic or alkaline. Do not use abrasive cleaning tools such as steel wool or wire brushes. WARNING - RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK: The bed must always be disconnected from the mains power supply before cleaning. WARNING - RISK OF ENTRAPMENT: Do not place any load on the bed when disconnected from the power supply. When cleaning avoid entering the entrapment zones identified in Section 3.2 25

5 Maintenance All maintenance must be performed by a trained service technician. Please contact your sales representative for details. 5.1 Regular Maintenance Part of the care and upkeep of your Stralus bed is regular maintenance. This product must be serviced at the frequency specified in Section 1.2. Regular maintenance is also a condition of this product s warranty, see Appendix A2. 5.2 Irregular Maintenance It is possible that your Stralus product may require maintenance before the next scheduled service. Such servicing may be required due to a technical fault or damage incurred during use. For a detailed list of possible faults and checks please see Section 6. WARNING: A product which required irregular maintenances for any reason must immediately be withdrawn from service without exception. A product not functioning correctly may cause harm. 26
