A larger, more easily read, automatic speed calculator forms an integral part of the pre-selector. The dial drum can be pre-set to either spindle speed in R.P.M. or cutting speed in F.P.M. A short, natural, and easy motion of the control lever and the new spindle speed is obtained. The single 4- position lever starts the spindle forward, shifts the gears for speed changing, reverses the spindle, and applies the powerful brake. An automatic lever lock prevents accidental starting. The improved design of the head provides shorter span between bearings resulting in greatly increased strength and rigidity of spindle and drive shafts. Higher speed gears have helical teeth precision finished by the shaving process. Where necessary the spur gears have. ground tooth form. The heat treated headstock shafts have precision ground integral splines. The twelve reversible spindle speeds, in geometric progression, cover a wide enough range to provide high speeds for the effective utilization of cemented carbide cutting tools and also moderate cutting speeds for high speed steel cutters. A smooth, free running head is assured by mounting the spindle on precision tapered roller bearings, and all shafts and dutch gears on ball bearings of ample load carrying capacity. No gears revolve on the spindle and no plain bearings are employed in this headstock. All head gears and multiple spline shafts are of high tensile heat treated alloy steel. The redesigned headstock is of the dry sump type with a deep oil reservoir well below the gear level to prevent gears from splashing and thus raising temperature of the oil. All headstock bearings and gears are lubricated by force feed. The powerful forward and reverse multiple disc clutches with alternating hardened steel and bronze discs are lubricated by forcing filtered oil through the center of the shaft. This prevents the formation of burnt oil deposits. THE UNIVERSAL CROSS SLIDE CARRIAGE has nine selective, power reversible cross and longitudinal feeds. A fully enclosed, oil and coolant tight apron houses the alloy steel heat treated feed change gears, Speed and ease of speeds are pre-selected to either the R.P.M. ex 1. Spindle forward 2. Positive lubrication to the bed ways, the carriage ways and the cross feed screw nut is by a hand piston pump. The cross slide has a quick indexing square turret, a rear tool post, and feed trips for both directions. The ground thread heat treated alloy steel cross feed screw is ball bearing mounted. A six position stop screw carrier on the apron trips the longitudinal feed. The feed engagement levers operate easily and are released by the touch of a finger. The carriage longitudinal stop rod bracket has I 0 X typ su prea witho the ba The ribbed The steel ~ of 60 and lc been redesigned to further increase its rigidity and thus the accuracy of the stop mechanism. THE TURRET SLIDE AND THE SADDLE BOTH have hardened and ground alloy steel wear plates for long lived accuracy. The turret is automatically undamped and indexed by the backward movement and locked and clamped by the forward movement of the slide. New turret design permits back indexing, if desired. Because of a special design feature in connection with the tapered roller center bearing the turret indexes with unusual accuracy and ease. New Because the cross slide and the hexagon turret tools to work simultaneously and closely coupled, an important feature for fast production. An improved turret slide clamp, of cam type, locks the slide rigidly in the desired position with less effort. The saddle apron with nine selective power feed changes is of similar construction and has the same outstanding features as the carriage apron. Six stop screws carried by the slide and indexed with the turret disengage the powerful feed clutch to within close limits of accuracy. A hand operated lubricating pump forces oil to the slide and saddle ways. THE BED, of still further improved design, provides a very rigid foundation for all types of work. The deep, double wall, box type section, scientifically braced by ~ull length, closely spaced, X type ribbing in the No.7 and V type ribbing in the No. 5, assures supreme rigidity and permanent alignment between spindle and ways without excessive weight. The magnetic starter is fully enclosed in the back of the bed directly beneath the headstock. The head, cast integral with bed, is strongly ribbed to carry the spindle and drive shaft bearings. The replaceable hardened and ground alloy steel bed ways present the top, bottom and sides of 60 Rockwell " (" hardness for wear resistance and long lived accuracy. THE COOLANT PUMP is driven by a V belt from the motor shaft. When coolant is not needed, the pump can be readily stopped by disengaging the clutch.
THE HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED COLLET CHUCK on the No. 7 provides ample gripping force to hold the largest bars under heaviest cuts, with no exertion on the part of the operator. THE NO. 5 COLLET CHUCK is hand operated (Optional on the No. 7). Greater ease of adjustment for diameter of stock and tightness of grip has been attained by a new design of finger holder. The novel engineering principle embodied in the wedge and finger design results in a more forceful grip coupled with greater ease of operation. The elastic grip compensates automatically for minor variations in the diameter of the bar. The precision master collet has the tapered nose, the bore and the rear end pilot ground for maximum accuracy. THE BAR FEED works in synchrony with the collet chuck. Hydraulic power advances the stock through the collet on the No. 7, while the No. 5 is hand operated (Optional on the No. 7). Double bars afford a rigid support for the ball bearing mounted two jaw universal chuck which grips the bar concentric with the spindle bore. THE THREAD CHASING ATTACHMENT will cut one pitch of thread with each leader and cover a range from 4 to 20 T.P.I. By means of change gears a leader will cut twice and four times its own number of threads per inch. The range thus. covered is from 4 to 40 T.P.I. Threading close up to a shoulder or into a bli~;~d hole becomes easy with the quick acting automatic knockout. The follower can be disengaged by any one of the six adjustable longitudinal carriage stops. THE CROSS SLIDE TAPER ATTACHMENT turns tapers up to 3 " per foot by 8 " long. Mounted directly on the rear of the cross slide it can be easily applied to a machine in the customer's own plant. The full length safety tube which encloses and supports the bar swings forward at the head end for easy loading. The two pedestals serve also as a storage rack. THE STEADY REST mounts directly on the bedways. A right and left hand screw opens and closes the front and rear slides. The four rollers are mounted on needle bearings. THE TURRET LEADING ATTACHMENT is simple in operation. A short forward pull on the lever will engage the follower and the leader. They can be disengaged either automatically by an adjustable stop screw or manually. Each leader will cut twice and four times its own number of threads per inch by means of change gears in the rear end gear train. The range covers from 4 to 40 threads per inch. THE CARRIAGE TAPER ATTACHMENT, of improved design, can be quickly engaged or disengaged fro11;1 turning taper or straight by a short motion of a lever at the front of the saddle. It will turn tapers up to 3 " per foot and 8 " long with cutters in the square turret as well as in the rear tool post. The cross feed nut has means for slack elimination and wear compensation. This unit must be attached to the machine at the factory.
