June 2015 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 3 President s First Year in Review Larry Lee MCCA President I started the year hoping MCCA would, continue monthly visits to Central and West, continue occasional road trips, put some variety in pre meeting eating locations, select some car shows to attend, continue growing the Tunas, and attract new members. We have had good representation at many of the Central and West gatherings, Ned has led us on enjoyable road trips [:-( we did not help him much on the yellow brick road], we added McPherson to the Car Shows we have attended, Tunas have continued to grow and attract Corvair people from other states, and we have new members. While we have had nice reminders to suggest alternate pre meet eats, and have done some, we have often chosen comfort and convenience and gone to the same place if no one put out a n alternate idea. In addition to the above objectives we have established the Mel Horstman Award, and have completed a revision of the By-Laws. We have a start on the Standing Rules. We continue to have an outstanding newsletter. We have been represented at Corvair events in at least 5 states. It has been gratifying to find Sedan Festival Trip Cancelled A combination of weather, holiday plans and broken Corvairs resulted in Ned Madsen being the only one in the DRC parking lot for the Sedan trip. So he called it off and took a short drive on his own. people who back up their ideas with the work and planning to implement those ideas. I feel it has been a good year. This year, we will work on developing the Standing rules, and continue work (and play) on all of the above goals. I suggest we repeat attendance at the McPherson Car Show (despite the fact I dropped a valve seat and have not been able to drive mine since), Moonlight Madness, Lake Afton, Central & West, and solicit ideas for other shows we might want to attend. Page 4 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter June 2015 A panoramic photo of the Saturday morning car show in the parking lot for Rotary Park downtown. Delightful Durango Tri-State By Terry Kalp Thursday May 28th I was headed West to Durango Colorado for the Tri-State Corvair meet. Travel across Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado was pretty uneventful. When I hit La Junta my GPS took me 30 miles out of the way thru Pueblo Then down to Walsenburg. It did take me around a pretty nasty thunderstorm so it wasn t all bad. I had planned to stop in Walsenburg but it was only 5 O clock and only three hours out of Durango, so I pressed on. With my ability to procrastinate of course the Host Hotel had already filled up and I had made no reservations for Thursday night not knowing for sure where I would end up. Found a Best Western in Durango that had one room so spent Thursday night there. First thing Friday morning was to seek out the motel I had reserved for Friday and Saturday night the Caboose. In daylight I found it was just next door and altho it was the middle of the morning I could check in and get my key, a real key not a credit card style device. Once settled in I headed the three blocks to the Host Hotel and spent the rest of the morning talking to Duane Wentlandt from Oregon. Duane has done several high end Corvair restorations, so I asked a lot Continued on Page 5 ABOVE: This fairly rare EM oil bath pre-cleaner was decorated with a pinstripe spider web. LEFT: One of the many nice, blue, EM convertibles on display at the Saturday morning Car Show. This was well equipped with Hands Wheels, wood steering wheel and bumper guards.

June 2015 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 5 Durango... Continued from Page 4 of questions. Later in the day more Corvair people arrived including Lee Olsen. Spent time chatting with Steve Goodman and other Colorado Corvair folk. Saturday was the Car Show. After a few wrong turns I found the lot tucked behind the VFW and next to a wonderful park. The hosts had brought the Hospitality room to the show, so there was drinks and snacks galore. Spent the morning walking around the 35 Corvairs on display. There were four or five EM convertibles... all of them some shade of blue. The cars vaired from survivors and drivers to Concours restorations. Got invited to go to lunch with Tim Shortle and his family. By family I mean his mother and brothers who were in town for Tim s oldest son s Hight School Graduation. In addition to hosting Tri-State Tim was also entertaing family and getting his son graduated. Very busy man. Saturday evening was the awards banquet held at the local Elks Lodge, a historic three story building done in the Deco style. Bar- B- Que and MC Christy Barden filled the evening. Up early Sunday morning to head back to Kansas. Traveled with Lee Olsen as far as Garden City, the we headed our separate ways. Tri-State in the Colorado mountains is hard to beat. TOP: A nice survivor 62 700 series station wagon at the show. The original (but very baked) black paint contrasted nicely with the red interior. BOTTOM: Larry Yoffee from Corvairs of New Mexico showed this excellent 1965 Corsa powered by the optional 180 hp Turbocharged engine. LEFT: This cactus antenna topper on a white LM coupe was a reminder that we were getting close to the great SouthWest.

The Streckers in their Corsa convertible, Ned in his 66, Weltes in their Black Corsa, Terry in Kermit and David Jacobson in his Aztec LM. Salina 140 Engine At the Hutchinson swap meet someone approached Bob Bright saying he had a 140hp Corvair engine for sale, it had been overhauled then set for several years. Bob passed the information to Terry then Terry passed it on to Mike B. who works in Salina. Mike checked it out and ended up buying it. The engine was brought to the Kalp shop and put on the MCCA engine run stand. After several sessions cleaning the points it fired up and ran with a miss. The engine had been stored on end on the bellhousing so a couple of cylinders had gotten filled with oil. Mike had pulled the sparkplugs and hand cranked it over to clear mos the oil before he brought it to the shop. When first started it smoked pretty strongly on one bank, but cleared out after awhile. Once back in Salina Mike started to reseal the engine, he found one pushrod tube so mangled it was keeping the push rod from moving. Once he found a cylinder stud replaced with a chunk of all-thread He decided to tear it all the way down. The spring from the front seal had gotten into the timing gears and damaged them both. ABOVE RIGHT: The Salina engine looked pretty clean (except for dust) and complete. LOWER RIGHT: When swapping out to 65 style linkage at the Kalp Shop, Mike noticed something sticking out from under one of the carbs. Turned out to be a fuel filter spring smashed under the carb.

June 2015 Lyle s 140 Engine Since last month s report Lyle s engine has had all four carbs rebuilt. Wanting a little more noise Lyle traded his stock exhaust for a couple a Cherry Bomb glasspacks. Once everything was together the engine was mounted on the MCCA run stand and ran for 20 minutes to break-in the cam. The next day the timing was set and carbs balanced. On Tuesday, June 9th Lyle and Terry got the engine installed into Lyle s coupe. Look for a yellow Corsa on the road soon.
