March 2017 WAYPOINTS Presidents message President s Message Hello again everyone. Well the weather hasn t been totally cooperative in providing flying weather but spring is coming. I was out in the 185 about 3 weeks back and it felt pretty good to be out and about. Just getting in and flying the little bit reminded me that It had been a while since I was out and I was a little rusty. Make sure you have good preflight checks and use your checklists. I have been looking at getting a Moose and selling the 185. The Moose is on floats so it should be real neat. (see picture) At Thursday s meeting we will have Dave Sward from Transport Canada attend to discuss common issues and problems encountered with amateur-built aircraft as well as to answer any questions people may have. If there are any topics you would like Dave to cover, please let John Mader know at vicepresident@eaahighriver.org in advance of the meeting. This should be a very interesting session. I don t have much more right now and see you at meeting. Soren!!!1
Vice President s Message Interesting Oshkosh Cockpits Hello Everyone, here are some interesting cockpit shots from Oshkosh 2012. This is an older Fly Baby, N19GG, built 1978. Very nice engine-turned dash. Note the turnbuckle in front of the turn and slip indicator to take the stresses from the wing brace wires across the fuselage. Nicely restored 1936 Monocoupe 90A NC15429, powered by a 90 hp Lambert radial. Upgraded with a built in GPS. Taxi visibility would require S-turns for sure.!!!2
Cockpit of the very rare Anderson-Greenwood AG-14. A picture of the aircraft can be seen on the cover of the Vintage magazine lying on the front seat. Being a pusher aircraft, there is great cockpit visibility, but not much aircraft out the front window for attitude reference. The T-handle on the floor is for the flaps. Anderson- Greenwood made 5 or 6 of these, then went on to become a major manufacturer of instrumentation valves. Cockpit of Bellanca Cruisemaster N7695B. Note the hurricane-force control tie-down system.!!!3
Simple-looking cockpit of a beautiful Laird open-cockpit biplane, NC4442. The FAA register shows it as a 1936 LC-RW300, but other sources list it as a 1929 LC-B200. It is powered by a 450 hp P&W Wasp Junior. The instrument in the centre of the panel is an altimeter, with airspeed to the upper left and a tach to the upper right. Oil temperature and pressure gauges are below, with a clock on the far right. This is the cockpit of a 1935 Kinner Sportster B, a low-wing open cockpit two-seater powered by a Kinner radial. It has very odd-looking control sticks. The very large T-handle sticking out of the left side of the panel is the parking brake handle. The a smaller T-handle coming out of the red square is the mixture. The throttles have to be the two levers with the silver balls on the ends coming out of the bottom of the panel. This would be an interesting aircraft to fly. Fly safely Everyone! Cheers, John Mader!!!4
