Step 1: Programing The Control Box 1. Determine the type of garage door opener you have, smart/learn or dip switch. Smart/learn units will have a colored button on the motor unit (). Dip switch units will have a series of switches (). Temporarily insert the included coin battery, + side up. The battery will drain if left in for an extended period. Only use the battery while programing. Remove when complete. If you have smart/learn model continue to the next step. If you have a dip switch model skip to step 1A. 2. Find your brand opener in Appendix A and note the number of times to press the button on the control box. 3. Make sure your garage door is closed. Press and hold the program button in the control box until the LED illuminates. () 4. Press and release the smart / learn button on the opener motor unit (). On some models there is an LED that illuminates when in learn mode. You may have to hold the button for several seconds. Refer to your opener s manual for more information. Required Tools: 1. Small Phillips head driver 2. Small flat heat driver 3. Plastic trim pry tool 4. T30 Torx wrench Photo A 4 5

5. If you re installing a single button Garage Control select button SW1 in the control box and press it the number of times shown in Appendix A, making sure the LED stops flashing after each press. The code is accepted when one of the following happens; an audible click, garage door opens, garage light blinks. Press the program button on the control box. Programing is complete. Press the button you selected again to test. If you re installing a two button Garage Control, repeat the previous steps with your second opener using button SW2. The middle Garage Control button is connected to SW2. Once the control is programmed REMOVE THE BATTERY by hand or with a non-metal tool. 6 7

Step 1A - For Dip Switch Models 1. Find your brand opener in Appendix B and note the number of times to press the button on the control box. 2. Match the dip switch settings in the control box to those on the opener. Turn extra switches Off, or opposite the ON marking on the switch panel. 3. Make sure your garage door is closed. Press and hold the program button in the control box until the LED illuminates. () 4. Once the control is programmed REMOVE THE BATTERY by hand or with a non-metal tool. 8 9

Step 2: 1. Move the shifter rearward. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2. Remove the trim surrounding the climate control knobs. With the lower compartment door 1/2 open, pull outward along the bottom edge of the trim, starting in the lower corner. Once the bottom is detach, pull out the sides and then the top. 3. Remove the lower compartment. You may want to cover the surface of the compartment door with masking tape to prevent scratches during removal. With the door open, place one hand flat on the bottom of the compartment and the other on the side and pull up and out. Do not pull on the compartment door. If the compartment doesn t release easily by hand you can use a curved trim removal tool and pry upwards on the front corner. There are also holes beneath the rubber mat where you can pull the compartment out with a hook tool or L key. 10 11

Step 2 Continued: For Golf / GTI: Figure D 4. Remove the T20 Torx screws at the front of the shifter trim and lift up at the front edge to remove the trim and button assembly. Figure E For Golf R: 4. Remove the T20 Torx screws (Figure E). Remove the two screws (#7, Figure D) and remove the console side covers, #8. Lift the center console insert (#5) upward to detach. For all vehicles: Figure E Figure F 5. Disconnect the connector on the left side button cluster and the push start button if equipped and any other wire harness connectors. Use a small screw driver to depress and release the connector latches and pull the connector outward. Figure F 12 13

Step 3: 1. Remove the silver trim around the shifter. Release the two latches on the bottom, front edge, and separate the center trim and shift boot from the surround trim. 2. Orient the shift boot so it fits through the opening and remove the button cluster. Set it aside for now. 3. Using a plastic trim removal tool, remove the end dash cover on the driver side. Pry outward along the edges to disengage the panel. 4. Remove the trim panel to the right of the accelerator pedal. Remove the T20 Torx screw and pull downward on the panel to release it. Figure D 14 Figure D 15

Step 4: 1. Remove the driver side storage compartment. With the door open put pressure on outside of the compartment s left wall while pull outwards to release. 2. Insert the end of the button harness with the 10 pin connector through the dash opening. 3. Route the harness across the fuse panel and out the opening to the left of the steering column. 4. Route the harness through the opening on the right of the steering column and out the back right side of the under dash panel. Warning: If the harness becomes caught up do not use excessive force to dislodge. Doing so could cause damage. 16 Figure D 17

Step 5: 1. Route the harness behind the metal support bar and into the center compartment opening. 2. Route the harness under the HVAC ducting and under the plastic dash support beams into the area around the shifter. Figure B 3. Attach the short leads on the Garage Control button harness to the harness for the left side button cluster. Using the Posi-Taps connect the red wire to the grey wire and the black wire to the brown wire. Make sure the wires are secure and no bare wire is showing. Take care not to drop the Posi-Taps. / D 18 Figure D 19

Step 6: 1. Remove the thin black trim piece on the back side of the button cluster by releasing the tabs on the bottom. 2. Push out the right side button blanks and replace with the Garage Control button assembly. Replace the thin black trim. Figure B 3. Re-install the button cluster. Reconnect all of the connectors and make sure the short leads on the Garage Control button harness sit in the recess behind the shifter. Don t secure the trim with the Torx screws yet. Figure D 4. Secure the Y terminal on the Garage Control power harness behind the T30 Torx bolt on the left side of the fuse panel. Figure C 5. Remove the 10 amp fuse in postion F36 if equipped. Figure D 20 21

Step 7: 1. Insert the provided 2 amp fuse into the Add-A-Fuse in the position shown. If your vehicle was equipped with a fuse in location F36, insert it into the 2nd position on the Add-A-Fuse. 2. Insert the Add-A-Fuse in the orientation shown in. 3. Route the end of the button harness over the top of the metal dash support inside the end compartment. 4. Connect the power harness to the red RCA jack on the long side of the control module (arrow 1) and connect the button harness to the black RCA jack (arrow 2 - Note: Picture may differ slightly from actual part). Figure D 2 A 1 For two button kits, the RCA plug corresponding to the 1st button on the button assembly is black. 5. If you haven t already, REMOVE THE BATTERY by hand or with a non-metal tool. 22 Figure D 23

Step 8: 1. Before removing the covering on the control s adhesive strips, test fit the module inside the dash opening as shown in. Make sure there isn t any pressure put on the connectors or wire harnesses. 2. Once you re comfortable with the positioning remove the clear layer from the adhesive strips and install the module. Keep pressure on the module for 30 seconds to help the adhesive set. 3. Reconnect the vehicles battery and test the Garage Control button. 4. Secure the harnesses with the provided zip ties. Remove any slack and make sure the cables are secure above the under dash cover and clear of the pedals and steering column. Zip tie the button harness to the metal support to the right of the accelerator peal. Tuck the button harness below the fuse panel and zip tie it and the power harness to the factory wiring to the left of the fuse panel. Use additional zip ties as needed to secure the cables. Figures B and C 5. Install the control cover using the provided screws. Figure D 24 Figure D 25

Step 9: 1. Reinstall the previously removed trim and you re done! Any warning lights on the dash should clear themselves after a short drive. The Garage Control is wired to be active only when vehicle power is on. This is for security and to prevent long term battery drain. It you d like it to function at all times the Add-A-Fuse can be connected to a terminal with constant power. Thank You! Thank you again for choosing the Double Apex Garage Control.
