The mission of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum is to preserve the history of Hagerstown, Maryland's aviation industry. This history spans more than 100 years of designing, building and flying aircraft that have played significant roles in world events. The museum has 21 historic aircraft in its collection, 16 of which were built in Hagerstown. One of the Hagerstown built aircraft is a 1956 Fairchild C-123 Provider. Page 2 Since the acquisition of Fairchild C-123 N681DG in November, 2012 much work has been accomplished. The largest and most involved project was repairing the control surfaces. In 2014, the rudder, elevators and ailerons, each the size of a small airplane wing, were removed and trucked to Hagerstown. Museum volunteers removed the old fabric, repaired the aluminum framework of each part and recovered these control surfaces with new fabric. Pegasus Flyer engine was successfully started. The 1956 Fairchild C-123 is a large military cargo aircraft with many complicated systems including electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and control cables. The 62 year old aircraft also has many parts that are hard to find. Right Engine Start, May, 2018 With all that s been accomplished, additional work is still needed to bring the C- 123 up to airworthy condition. The next C-123 work trip is planned for mid July 2018. Follow along on Facebook. The C-123 project has been a major undertaking for the museum. The continued support of over 400 donors and thousands of hours of volunteer labor has moved the C-123 project forward to its final stages of completion. The museum estimates $20,000 is needed to cover the costs of travel for the work crew in July, parts and supplies needed for the C-123 and finally the costs of fuel, oil and insurance for the flight home to Hagerstown, Maryland. The C-123 must fly out of Ft Lauderdale as soon as all systems are inspected and functioning properly. Control Surface Recover Team, April, 2015 A year later the finished parts were trucked back to Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport and reinstalled on the C-123. Work continued on the C-123 over the next two years and in May 2018, a crew from the museum, with the assistance of C-123 experts Bill Schillig and Bob Gbur from the Air Heritage Museum in Beaver Falls PA, traveled to Ft Lauderdale, FL to "wake up" the C-123 from its long winter s nap. Systems were inspected, fuel and oil were added to the engines and the right Your support is urgently needed now to fund the final leg of this epic journey. With your donation and purchase of raffle tickets, the museum s Fairchild C-123 will soon fly home to Hagerstown. Together, we can preserve this historic Fairchild aircraft! Please do your part.
