Pinewood Derby GENERAL CAR RULES: Cars may be built from any kit, new (2018) or old Royal Rangers kits, B.S.A. kits, Pinecar kits or other similar kits. Each car must be newly built for this year s derby. Cars entered in previous years cannot be used. Individuals may build one car for speed, and a second car for design. Or one car for both categories in their class. This same rule applies to the unlimited class as well. All cars must fit on, and roll down the track, without interfering with another car. The entire car must stage behind the starting pin in the center of the lane. Weights and accessories may be added to the car, but are included for all measurements. They must be securely fastened to the car, and fixed in place. All car parts from the kit should be used for their intended purpose. CAR SPECIFICATIONS: Maximum weight: 5.5 ounces Minimum under car clearance: 3/8 inches Minimum distance between wheels: 1 ¾ inch Maximum length: 7 ½ inches Maximum width: 2 ¾ inches Maximum height: 3 inches WHEELS AND AXLES: Wheelbase may be lengthened or shortened as desired, as long as all car specs. are met. LUBRICATION: Any lubricant may be used, but it must be dry at the time of inspection. All excess lubrication must be removed before inspection. CHECK-IN AND INSPECTION: 1. Cars must pass the official inspection using the official scale and measurement devices. 2. If a car fails the inspection, it may be corrected and re-inspected. 3. After a car passes inspection, it will be impounded; the car cannot be modified or lubricated at this time. 4. Each entrant must register their own cars. RACING: 5. If a car leaves its lane, and the race officials determine that a fault in the track or starting mechanism caused the incident, the heat will be re-run after the fault is repaired. 6. If a wheel falls off during a race, the car may be repaired. The repair must be completed timely, so as to not delay racing. The repair will be monitored by a race official. 7. Any appeals or rule questions must be promptly brought to the attention of the race officials. Race officials will use Biblical principles to make all decisions.
UNLIMITED CLASS: (OPTIONAL) Use all your ingenuity and imagination. All of the previously mentioned rules apply with the following exceptions: 1. Maximum weight: 32 ounces 2. Maximum length: 12 inches RACING CLASSES: (Classes may be adjusted according to total number of entrants) Ranger Kids (K, 1 & 2) Discovery (3,4 & 5) Adventure (6, 7 & 8) Expedition (9-12) Leaders/Adults Open Class (siblings not available at District level) Unlimited WORKMANSHIP & DESIGN: The cars being judged for design will be scored in three categories: Originality: How much creative thought went into the design (score 0-20) Craftsmanship: The skill the workman showed in building the car, were the accessories handmade or purchased and attached. (score 0-50) Appearance: Overall appearance, paint job, is it pleasing to the eye (score 0-30)
