: TO BE READ BEFORE USING THE HIGH VOLTAGE FUNCTION INFORMATION The High Voltage Test Function has been Calibrated in conjunction with the following equipment:- Advance Hivolt 100Kv High Voltage, Digital Volt Meter Type: DVM 100/20 Serial No. 149608 Calibration Certificate No. 182 dated 21 st May 2001 The Temperature Reading has been calibrated in conjunction with the following equipment: Digitron Instruments Thermocouple Simulator Type K NiCr/NiAl Serial No. 022/08 Calibration Certificate No. 131803 dated 1 st November 2000 The above instruments have been tested to manufacturer s specifications and calibration is traceable to National Standards. The High Voltage, Digital Volt Meter above relies for its accuracy on a 1000M ohm input Test Resistor. This Test Resistance (impedance) is regarded as an Industry Standard. The input resistance (impedance) is identical to that of the Hand Held High Voltage Test Probe of the Sprayshop Analizer. THE HIGH VOLTAGE TEST FACILITY ON THIS METER IS INTENDED TO BE A GUIDE ONLY. If the Sprayshop Analizer is being used in the Temperature Mode whilst in the location of any equipment producing electromagnetic interference loss of functionality may occur. TO OVERCOME THIS POSSIBLE LOSS, IT IS ADVISABLE TO USE THIS INSTRUMENT IN AN AREA FREE OF HIGH ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE. 3
It is possible that the Kv Output readings may not compare with those contained in the equipment manufacturer s Specifications / Data Sheets. However, this does not necessarily mean the equipment under test is faulty. Equipment manufacturers utilise differing electronics systems. True output readings, can only be obtained under laboratory conditions. For guidance on the output Kv readings of your particular equipment, please consult your main distributor for further information. It is important that, should you have a query relating to their equipment, you always inform them that you are using a High Voltage Test Resistance (impedance) of 1000M ohm. (The Manufacturer s Technical Department should then be able to advise the expected readings at the tip of the Spraygun). Usually the High Voltage Test Probe should only be used when testing High Voltage Outputs from the tip of the Spraygun. (Equipment manufacturers utilise different internal resistances (impedance) which will affect the overall HV output). It is not advisable to test directly, the generator output with this probe Contact your supplier for further information It is suggested that the high voltage output readings be monitored frequently. Any decline in operating efficiency will then be noted and the appropriate action may be taken. The High Voltage Probe can also be utilised to identify the electrostatic field so as to aid the positioning of automatic guns, and the tracing of high voltage leakage caused by the use of metallic powders - Refer to your supplier. When all tests have been completed, please ensure the multi-function switch is set to the OFF position. Ensure PP3 battery is disconnected if the unit is not to be used for some time. Use only good quality PP3 batteries. The Sprayshop Analizer should be re-calibrated annually to ensure accurate readings refer to your supplier. 4
FEATURES: Audible Signal for Earth / Ground Detection Digital High Voltage Meter Digital Thermometer OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Earth / Ground / Continuity Testing Insufficient object earthing / grounding or high surface resistance are often responsible for poor powder attraction and therefore priority should be given to improving the earthing / grounding of the article to be sprayed electrostatically. Insert the shrouded test leads into their corresponding sockets (Red and Black) Turn the multi-function switch to Earth / Temp position. The display will be activated to the C scale. DISREGARD DISPLAY FOR THIS FUNCTION. To test that the audible alarm is operating, press the test lead probes together. A high pitched signal should now be heard. To carry out earthing / grounding / continuity tests progressively, move test probes along the various connecting points of the earth / ground path from the generator through to the hanging jigs and finally to the articles to be sprayed. REMEMBER - ONLY WHEN THERE IS SUFFICIENT EARTH / GROUND PATH between the two test probes will a high pitched audible signal be emitted. Spraygun Earthing / Grounding Occasionally, when spraying electrostatically, the operator may suffer shocks if the earth / ground connections in the spraygun or generator become faulty. To confirm that the gun handle earthing / grounding is satisfactory, press one test probe to the metal gun handle and the other to the generator earth / ground point (with gun still connected). If the earthing / grounding to the gun is sufficient, the audible signal will be heard. If no signal is attained, further investigation may be necessary. Refer toyour supplier if further assistance is required. NB Always ensure electrostatic generator is earthed / grounded correctly from the mains supply. If using a mains extension lead, check that lead has earth / ground conductor. Some manufactured leads do not! 5
Digital Thermometer The Digital Thermometer will operate up to 300 C when used in conjunction with the surface contact probe (supplied as standard). Temperature Testing Remove shrouded test leads from sockets. Turn the multi-function switch to the Earth / Temp position. The display will stabilise to the C (centigrade) scale. Disregard the LCD reading when no sensing probe is inserted. Using Surface Contact Probe Insert probe into Green K Socket. The LCD reading should now rise to room temperature (approx), Touch the probe to the object to be powder coated. Wait for the LCD reading to stabilise to read the surface temperature. This surface contact probe will be found to be very useful when coating large items where considerable heating of the mass has to take place before the object reaches powder curing temperatures. Other probes are available for monitoring the temperature through tunnel ovens, hot / cold spots in box ovens and air temperature. For example, by attaching the Thermocouple wire to an item passing through a tunnel oven and noting the temperature every 30cm s (12 ), it is possible to calculate if the oven is operating at the correct temperature, for the correct period of time, to enable satisfactory powder curing. Contactyour suppliert for further information. 6
High Voltage Testing If the charging voltage at the spraygun electrode is low, the generator, and / or its associated cable, (if applicable) may be at fault. To maintain a check on this, a high voltage test probe is supplied and can be used as follows: Remove shrouded test leads / temperature probes from meter. Assemble high voltage probe. Turn the multi-function switch to the volts (KV) position. ALWAYS consult the Instruction / Operating Manual(s) of the Electrostatic Equipment being tested BEFORE commencing a High Voltage Test. PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THEIR SAFETY SECTION Ensure High Voltage Generator / source is switched OFF BEFORE connecting Test Probe / Clip. 1. Connect single black earth / ground lead, using crocodile / alligator clip, to the generator earth / ground (or known earth / ground). Important - Always ensure that a good connection is made otherwise severe damage may result. 2. Plug in single red lead with jack plug into the available socket on the Analizer. - Always connect earth / ground black lead crocodile / alligator clip - before high voltage red lead otherwise severe damage may result. Switch on generator (ensure material supply is off). Switch on static supply. Pull gun trigger (static should now be available on gun tip). Hold the BLACK HAND-GRIP ONLY and place the polished sphere to the gun tip. Wait for LCD reading to stabilise and take note. NEVER hold the polished sphere (ball) with your hands RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK Switch off generator when satisfactory reading attained. Reading will be in Kilo-volts. 7
