San Diego RX Club Well of the Eight Echoes Desert Run 2014 Rev: 1/11/2014 Event Details Date: Sunday, January 19 th Time: Meet at 8:30 AM Driver s mtg: 8:45 AM Promptly depart at 9:00 AM Location: Safari Coffee Roasters 1012 West El Norte Parkway, Escondido, CA To Do: Arrive with a full tank of gas. There is a gas station at the start. Check your cars out before Sunday morning, just as a precaution. General Sunday, January 19 th at 9:00am, sharp, we re off! I know this was sort of a last minute announcement, but we have not had a nice drive for some time. You have been asking me for a drive for a while, but there have been a lot of things going on the last year or more, not the least of which were some car issues. That was all fixed, at least the car things, in November last year, in preparation for SevenStock 16. A great time there and on the track at Auto Club Speedway! Time for everyone to stretch their legs. This run will be a great one. The top level map here provides a general idea of our route. We start in Escondido and end up in Pine Valley. Even though there has not been much rain in San Diego, the desert should still be putting on a nice show, even if not at peak display. Estimated mileage is 180 miles,
not including to and from the rendezvous points, and approximately 5 to 6 hours, not including lunch, etc. We start at Safari Coffee in Escondido, a break on the south side of Lake Henshaw and stop at Carlee s Place in Borrego Springs for lunch. I am not exactly sure of the arrival time for lunch, though. It will have to be a rough estimate. We will stop in Ocotillo for a short break and to refuel if necessary. Then we head up the hill to the Desert View Tower at the top of the grade, just on the north side of I-8. An interesting place, if you have never previously been. The run is divided into four (4) segments of 45, 31, 67 and 47 miles, proceeding clockwise from Escondido. Below are detailed maps of each segment, showing elevation profiles, to give you an idea of the drive. We will be stopping for lunch in Borrego Springs at Carlee s Place, as noted below. Check the link provided for details on the place and a menu. I typically pre-run these drives, but this time it was not possible. This is done both to get a better idea of the time involved, as well as to verify road conditions and tricky intersections. Just be flexible and plan on a day s event. You can always depart early, but once you get to a little beyond Borrego, you are essentially committed to the day. If you do not plan to go the distance, let me know. If you are into mapping / GPS applications and care for a dump of the information, drop me a note. I have a Garmin Oregon 450 unit and utilize BaseCamp, as well as National Geographic TOPO! v4.5.0. The latter was used to create the maps provided herein. Bring FRS radios, w/ privacy codes, if you have them. It is much easier to keep in touch. We can exchange phone numbers at the start, as well. There will be times for breaks and at least two (2) fuel stops: Borrego Springs and Ocotillo. Stops Along the Way Lake Henshaw parking lot Borrego Springs, Carlee s Place for lunch. Also refuel here as necessary. Ocotillo, rest and refuel Desert View Tower Major s Diner, Pine Valley (official end) Perhaps others for photo-ops
