Soon, the Swiss Solar Day became the central element of Swissolar s «Energy from the sun» campaign (earlier called «Solarbegeistert» enthusiastic for the sun). As in 2008, this year s sixth promotional event for solar energy in Switzerland took place at the same time as the «European Solar Days», this time the event covered a whole week and was, therefore, appropriately named in the plural: «Solar Days». The aim of the event in Switzerland is to enhance solar energy s profile in all fields of application (heat and power), to focus media attention on solar energy over a short period of time, increase public awareness by providing information and on-site counselling as well as establishing partnerships with other organisations, public authorities and energy utilities. Every year, the Swiss «Solar Days» stimulate social activity in the whole country, with companies, schools, associations, municipalities and energy utilities making use of this platform to present information on solar power and to allow this fascinating form of energy to be experienced at first hand. Swissolar would like to thank all those partners and sponsors whose great commitment has contributed to the event having such a widespread impact! For the first time, the event in Switzerland was extended to cover a whole week. A total of 207 events were staged between May 15 th and 22 nd, 2009. Around 30'000 people visited the various presentations on all forms of solar power applications. In addition, topics such as environmentally-compatible mobility and energy-saving in the building area were presented along with other renewable energy topics. 201 participants were responsible for the organisational side of things. Like last year, companies were at the top of the list (76), followed by local authorities (43, 25 of which are Energy Cities). The slight increase in the participation of energy utilities (14) was pleasing, as was that of schools (6), too. With 285 reports noted (print, radio, TV, Internet), the event once more received a considerable echo in the media. Print media presence, however, decreased by around 12% compared with the previous year. 1 Additional reports on various local radio stations, not registered statistically.

Alle Veranstaltungen in Ihrer Region finden Sie unter www.swissolar.ch und 0848 00 01 04 Website Advertisements Support for the organisers Swissolar supported the organisers of the events with the following publications and advertising material: Balloons, large and small, T-shirts, caps, banners, posters, preprinted letter forms, Solar Day flyers. The completely new design was adapted to match Swissolar s «Energy from the sun» campaign. Furthermore, Swissolar information pamphlets on solar heating systems for singlefamily homes and solar heating for apartment blocks were made available, as well as pamphlets on solar power. Website On our completely redesigned www.tagedersonne.ch website, event organisers were able register their events themselves and, at the same time, order advertising material. Further, a catalogue of ideas, a check-list, draft advertisements, model letters and sample media text were made available. Media work Swissolar called attention to the «Solar Days» by means of two press releases (one in mid April and another 3 days before the start of the event). Further, tailor-made lists of regional events were sent to regional media at the beginning of May. Additionally, 6 advertisements were placed in commuter newspapers and the Sunday press in the German and French-speaking parts of Switzerland. Questionnaires 58 event organisers used the questionnaire sent by Swissolar for their responses. Here some highlights: 5 organisers would like to take part in next year s events again. 54 were completely satisfied or at least to a large extent with the advertising materials provided. 34 considered the sample media text as very or at least partly useful. The event calendar on the Internet allowed users to search according to various criteria (type of event, date, language) as well as finding all events within a particular radius from a defined location. Support was provided by a map.

Without the significant support offered by various sponsors and partners, staging the «Solar Days» would not be possible. The event s success exceeded all expectations: In 17 countries, the man and woman on the street, students and companies were able to obtain information on solar energy at around 7'500 events. Almost 4'500 organisers of events were involved and the number of visitors amounted to around 550'000. The «European Solar Days» were supported by the EU s «Intelligent Energy Europe» program. From 7 th to 14 th May, 2010, «Solar Days» will be taking place in Switzerland again on the same dates, once more, as the European Solar Days. Together with SwissEnergy for Municipalities and further partners, Swissolar will be providing for a convincing presentation on solar energy themes. Further, companies, above all those active in the building, solar power and finance areas, will be able to enjoy the possibility of taking part as sponsors. In the individual countries, the activities of the national solar associations were co-ordinated by the European Solar Thermal Association ESTIF. The European Photovoltaics Association EPIA was also actively involved.
