Model builder s Eye Boeing 787 Hiroshi Igami
Forward Hello and welcome to this book. I have been making Microsoft Flight simulator models for a very long time. If you have been flying in MS Flight simulator world, it might be possible that you have already met my models. The main purpose of this book is to explain what makes 787 models a true 787, which is a key point Also this is good for a guidebook at watching at the airport s observation deck. Knowing things are fun. Hiroshi Igami 2

1. Basic knowledge History and background Boeing launched Boeing 7E7 after 50 orders by All Nippon Airways (Airline in Asia, Japan). This picture shows the model that was displayed at the Japan Aerospace 2004. At that time, the aircraft's shape was significantly different than the one we can see nowadays 5

787Family Like other Boeing Aircraft, Boeing is offering a family aircraft. Originally, 4 variants were proposed but 1 has been cancelled. A.Boeing 787-3 Launched on 26APR2004 with 787-8 but canceled at 13DEC2010. It was ordered by All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines (Both a Airline in Asia, Japan) The main difference for this variant is the winglet. This variant was intended to replace the 767s which are used for short routes at same wing span. This would have enabled them to be used at the same spot at the airport. The fuselage length of the 787-3 is the same as 787. 787-3 MTOW (Maximum Take off weight ) 364,000 lb Range 2500 3050 nmi Center fuel tank was removed from the 787-8. 7

Cross section of 787 fuselage. Right is the cross section of 787 It looks alike a simple oval but not a circle just pressed from the side. If carefully see, the widest place is the arm rest and that s a bit higher then the center. On the cargo deck, major LD-3 container can be used. LD-3 container is used at many wide body aircrafts. (767 uses LD-2 which is smaller) There is a space above the cabin. Some airline places a crew rest there near the front end and rear of the cabin. At those place center luggage bin are not installed. 9
Sample 10
Size and shape (Front/Rear) 787-8 has a wide wingspan, much wider then 767 s. Wide and slim wing will be a advantage at the aircraft s performance. It was difficult to make those wide, slim and light wings before using the new materials for making the wing. 60.1m 19.8m 11

2. Watching 787 787 is a really beautiful and a brand new aircraft. First let s see from some photos and try feeling the impression. 13
Sample 14
3. Watching closer (Fuselage Center) The center part is not so different when observed from the upper side but there is a huge difference when observed from below. Center Bottom fuselage Heat exchanger Inlet Cabin Air inlet Heat exchanger Outlet Center Keel Narrowed Some observations: 1. Bottom center keel is sticking out. 2. Wing root fairing is narrowed at the main gear door. 3. Cabin Air inlet is sticking out. 15
