(Actual size selection only available on recessed/flush mount configuration) GENERAL Furnish and install where indicated on plans or described in schedules FEMA Louver Type AFG501 as designed and manufactured by The Airolite Company LLC, Schofield, Wisconsin. Louvers shall be AMCA certified and tested per FEMA 320-08, FEMA 361-08 and ICC 550-08 for depbirs impact only. Furnish louvers with bird screen, installation hardware and finishes as specified and as required for a complete installation. SUBMITTALS Manufacturer shall submit shop drawings incorporating key plans, elevations, sections and details showing profiles, angles and spacing of louver blades and frames; unit dimensions related to wall openings and construction; and, anchorage details and locations. For each type of product specified, submit free area, air performance, water penetration ratings. Provide samples of manufacturer s finish and color charts showing the standard colors available. PRODUCTS Louvers shall be FEMA Louver Type AFG501 with visible mullions and shall be AMCA Certified and tested to FEMA 320-08, FEMA 361-08 and ICC 500-08 standards for storm shelter and safe rooms for debris impact only, which simulates a 15 lb 2x4 travling at 100 mph. Louvers shall be 5.5-inches (139.7 mm) deep and assembled entirely from extruded and formed aluminum components. Blades and frames shall be 0.25-inch (6.35 mm) thick. Blades shall be horizontal, inverted-vtype. WELDED ASSEMBLY Join stationary blade, head, sill and jamb frames with welds concealed from view. Louver blades shall be joined to each jamb frame with fillet welds produced with the Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/Mig) process. STRUCTURAL DESIGN CRITERIA Manufacturer shall design and furnish all supports required to withstand a wind force of not less than 250 pounds per square foot and tested to FEMA 320-08, FEMA 361-08 and ICC 500-08 standards for storm shelter and safe rooms for debris impact only. FEMA Grilles larger than 84.5-inches (215 cm) wide x 120.5-inches (306 cm) high or 120.5-inches (306 cm) wide x 84.5-inches (215 cm) high will be fabricated and installed in multiple sections. Louver blades, frames, mullions and anchorages shall be demonstrated to withstand the specified wind design load. LOUVER TYPE AFG501 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS AIROLITE LOUVER TYPE AFG501 is a 5.5-inch (140 mm) deep, severe duty extruded aluminum louver designed to protect exterior wall penetrations on FEMA 320 or 361 compliant storm shelters or safe rooms. Louver type AFG501 may be installed in any exterior wall penetration that requires protection. Design incorporates inverted V style blades which lend high free area and very little airflow resistance while providing maximum protection against extremely high wind loads and wind-borne debris. Louver Type AFG501 withstands wind loads up to ±250 PSF (11.97 kpa) and tested per FEMA 320-08, FEMA 361-08, and ICC 500-08 for debris impact only, which simulates a 15 lb. 2 x 4 traveling at 100 MPH. Airolite Louver Type AFG501 has AMCA Licensed air performance and water penetration ratings that enable designers to select and specify this product with confidence. The AMCA Certified Ratings Seal applies to air performance and water penetration ratings. Airflow Resistance (Standard Air -.075 lb/ft 3 ) Water Penetration (Test Size 48 in. x 48 in. Test Duration of 15 min.) Model AFG501 resistance to airflow (pressure drop) varies depending on louver application (air intake or air exhaust). Free area velocities (shown) are higher than average velocity through the overall louver size. (Tested to AMCA Figure 5.5) The AMCA Water Penetration Test provides a method for comparing various louver models and designs as to their efficiency in resisting the penetration of rainfall under specific laboratory test conditions. The beginning point of water penetration is defined as that velocity where the water penetration curve projects through 0.01 oz. of water (penetration) per sq. ft. of louver free area. *The beginning point of water penetration for Model AFG501 is 634 fpm free area velocity. These performance ratings do not guarantee a louver to be weather-proof or stormproof and should be used in combination with other factors including good engineering judgement in selecting louvers.
