The safe use of lines is perhaps the most basic skill required of a deckhand and a fundamental responsibility of crewmembers aboard every tugboat, towboat and barge. Improper line handling can result in back injuries, slips, trips and falls, falls overboard, serious injury and even death. This year s calendar presents 12 basic rules compiled by the AWO Coastal and Interregion Safety Committees for the safe use of lines. Line handling became a focus in the Safety Committees when it was noted that a large number of inexperienced individuals entering the industry did not have a good understanding of the importance of safety issues involving lines. Safe line handling includes care, inspection, construction, maintenance and marlin spike seamanship (knots and splicing), all issues for which lesson plans were developed by the Safety Committees and delivered aboard vessels to raise the skill level of new deckhands to a journeyman level. When carefully followed, the safety messages included in this calendar will help keep crewmembers safe as they work with these most fundamental tools of the industry. AWO would like to thank the following companies for the wonderful photos presented on each calendar page: Crowley Maritime Corporation (cover & July); Seabulk Towing, Inc.
