2015 El Paso County Fair Demolition Derby July 25th 6:00 pm General Rules 4/03/15 Limited Welds, Compacts and Trucks that have run in previous Demolition Derbies will be allowed to run as long as they meet El Paso County Demolition Derby Rules. New for 2015 Mini Van Class 2015 Derby Classes: Limited Weld Compact Compact Truck Chain/Wire Mini Van Registration form and release must be completed with paid entry fee prior to car inspection. To receive purse money a valid driver s license must be presented. If a car fails inspection, corrections can be made anytime before the driver s meeting; if you decline you will be disqualified with no refund. If driver is under the age of 18, parent must be present during registration and provide ID and sign waiver. Video replays will not be allowed, all judges decisions are final. Car numbers are on a first come basis, early registration is recommended. Cars must have legible numbers on both sides of car and on top or hood of car. This rule will be enforced. Only one support vehicle allowed in pit with each registered car. No alcohol allowed in the pits at anytime! No animals are allowed in pit area or fairgrounds. The driver s meeting is mandatory for drivers and crew. Compact cars will race under Limited Weld rules. Compact cars may be 1
American or Foreign. Disqualification of car or driver for any reason will not receive a refund. These rules supersede any and all rules previously posted. Rules are subject to change at any time, please review periodically for changes. Any changes will be posted immediately on the website. The El Paso County Fair puts on the Demolition Derby for the entertainment value. Please keep in mind that all the personnel working the event are volunteers and do this because they enjoy it. The Demo Derby is supposed to be FUN! DRIVER RULES The drivers MUST wear a safety belt, safety helmet, long sleeve shirt and long pants. Fire suits, face shields and gloves are recommended. Fire extinguisher is to be mounted in passenger compartment in driver s reach this is mandatory. No passengers allowed during the race. All drivers must remain in the vehicle with seat belt and helmet on while in the arena, unless escorted by a race official or being towed to the pits. Speed limit in the pit area is 5 mph for all vehicles. The Driver is responsible for the conduct of him/herself, their pit crew, spouse and their friends. Any display of violence, profanity or unsportsmanlike conduct towards other drivers, fans or officials will result in immediate disqualification and/or escorted removal from the fairgrounds. The red driver s flag must be held so other drivers, judges on the ground and the announcer s booth can clearly see it. Only drivers and crew of the car being inspected should be in the inspection area at that time. DRIVING RULES Drivers must make a hit every minute, and the hit must be aggressive. Patty cake hits and sandbagging are grounds for disqualification. Drivers will only get 2
one warning with a yellow flag before disqualification. You will be disqualified if: Driver will receive one warning with a yellow flag by the judge; a second time you will be disqualified. YOU DELIBERATELY HIT A DRIVER S DOOR!!!! SHOWING YOUR DRIVER S DOOR OR USING THE DOOR AS SHIELD. IF YOU PULL YOUR DOOR IN FRONT OF A MOVING CAR AND STOP, YOU ARE FAIR GAME TO BE HIT IN THE DRIVERS DOOR. WE WILL NOT DISQUALIFY THE CAR THAT HITS YOU FOR THIS! IF THE JUDGES FEEL THAT YOU HIT A DRIVER S DOOR DELIBERATELY, YOU MAY GET A WARNING OR YOU MAY BE DISQUALIFIED. TEAM DRIVING, WHERE TWO OR MORE CARS RUN IN A PACK AND WORK ON THE REST OF THE FIELD BUT DO NOT WORK ON EACH OTHER, WILL NOT BE ALLOWED, THIS IS GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION! Three wheels out of bounds (on dirt berm), holding (parking your car in front of another car) and car fires. If you become stalled you will have 2 minutes to get restarted and 1 minute to make a hit for a total of 3 minutes. If you do not do this your car will be clocked out and disqualified, put your RED FLAG UP. Waiting to put your red flag up does not advance your placement. If the last two cars in a heat become stuck together for a minute, as a result of a double hit, the cars will be pulled apart to continue racing to decide first place. If the last two cars become stuck together as a result of a single hit, the moving vehicle making the hit will be declared the winner. In the main event if car 2 & car 3 become stuck together and car 1 isn t stuck, car 1 has 30 seconds to make a hit on car 2 & car 3. If car 2 & car 3 are still stuck together after car 1 s hit then car 1 will be declared the winner. We will then pull apart car 2 & car 3 to compete for second and third place. Green flag signals go. JUDGING RULES 3
Red flag signals stop. Yellow flag signals warning. Black flag signals disqualification. Cars will line up head to head, in the center of the arena, with the judges starting the race. The cars will be inspected from the written rules published by the El Paso County Fair. All Judges will receive a half hour lunch break at approximately 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm. No inspections will be done during this period of time. Judges will give a first call and second call for line up. We will not wait this year for cars. If your car is not ready when heat is called you will be disqualified with no refund. Only the driver can voice any concerns about the derby to the head race official. No pit crew, family, friend or fan will be acknowledged in case of a dispute. Judges will not make or change their decisions from spectator s video. Videos will not be reviewed. Important Driver Information: Registration is $50 for car and driver. Early registration before July 10 th at 4:00 pm will receive one pit pass free (worth $25) with completed entry form and $50 registration fee. Pit gate will open on July 25 th at 10:00 am. Car registration will end at 4:00 pm, south pit gate will close and move to the east pit gate. Car inspections will end at 4:30 pm. Mandatory Drivers Meeting will be at 5:00 pm under tent. All Judges will take a lunch break between 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm, no inspections during these times. All winners are REQUIRED to fill out and sign a W-9 and present valid driver s license before receiving their purse check! All Race officials decisions are FINAL 4
LIMITED WELD/COMPACT/SMALL TRUCK CLASS RULES These car classes will run in separate heats at the derby. 1. Vehicles Allowed: Any stock American automobile, No jeeps, truck (except in truck class), convertibles, hearses, ambulances, and limousines are allowed. 2. Remove Parts: Remove all glass, fiberglass, lights, light brackets, body trim, headliner, rear seats, door panels, carpeting, and all unnecessary electrical wires. 3. Fuel Tanks: Factory fuel tanks must be removed. A maximum 10 gallon fuel cell shall be installed inside the passenger compartment, forward of the rear axle. Container must be securely fastened down to floor either by welding or bolting. If tank is other than metal it must be secured in a metal box with lid, made of no less than 1/8 inch steel with no up and down or side to side movement/no milk crates. Boat tanks work well. 4. Battery: A maximum 2 battery, 1/8 battery box, shall be installed in the passenger compartment, forward of the rear axle bolted or welded to the floor, batteries must be secured with no up and down or side to side movement. Battery box cannot reinforce the passenger door. A white rag will be tied to the negative battery cable. Battery disconnect switch s can be used as an alternative. No beer coolers. 5. Radiators: Radiators must be installed in the factory position, no other water supply may be used. May be manufactured with material no thicker than ¼ 6. Frames: All bodies must be mounted on stock frames, may remove frame spacers and replace bolts no larger ¾. Welding of body to the frame is limited to the front inside fenders. Homemade motor and transmission mounts will be allowed. Frame patching will be allowed, No more than 2 Patches not to exceed ¼ in thickness and no more than 1 over lapping damaged area. This means 4 patches total. Factory welds may be re-welded, as long as no additional material is used and does not exceed original factory weld. 7. Trunks: Welded-Maximum size filler rod 3/8. Maximum size strap 1/8 thick X 2 wide.bolted-four locations. maximum size rod 1 washer size 4 X 4 x 5
1/4.Chained- Four locations. In addition 2 straps 2 wide by 3/8 thick. It may be welded from the trunk to the bumper. Weld not to exceed six [6] inches on bumper and trunk. One method will be allowed in limited weld class 8. Hoods: Hoods may be welded, chained or bolted down. Maximum size chain 3/8.Bolts 1 with 4 washers and nuts. Six locations, three each side of hood, no bolts placed in front area of hood to protect radiator. Pick one method. No pulling hood forward and bending down to cover radiator. On old iron only 4 of the 6 can go to the frame. On 80 s and newer all 8 can go to frame. 9. Doors: Doors must be welded or chained shut, when welding you may use filler rod only large enough to fill the cracks, no chain over 3/8. Driver s door must be reinforced with either a minimum of ¼ plate or a horizontal bar not to exceed 10 past front or rear door seam that cannot stick out more than 3 10. Fender Well: Fender wells may be cut and rolled for wheel clearance. 11. Tires: Maximum 16, no studs, no split rims, no foam filled, air only. Double sidewalls OK, but no screwing to the rim, valve stem protection OK, valve caps must be removable, valve stem must be clear of bead sealant. You may run any tire as long as it will slide under your car. 12. Wheels: You may have a modified rim to allow for 16 tires, no more than ¼ material. 13. Bumpers: Automobile Bumpers only, bumper not to exceed width of car, bumper may be cut in half to fit car width (must be joined using butt weld only), no overlap welding. Bumpers must be welded to the stock bumper mounts or directly to the end of the frame with no additional material added. Can t extend past the A arm. 14. Suspensions: No modified shackles lift kits or blocks. Spring clips not to exceed 4 per side, differentials must be positioned over the springs. Shocks may be lengthened by welding extensions to the mounting stud. Leaf spring conversions are allowed with as few modifications to frame as necessary. Must appear to be stock 9 leafs 6 thick 3 wide. 15. Drivers Protection-Mandatory: A center bar on the inside of the car extending from the drivers side center 6
post to the passenger side center post behind the driver s seat must be welded in. Bar or post not to exceed 6 diameter. Plates welded to the ends of the bar not to exceed 16x16x1/4. Outside door protection not to exceed 10 past the front and rear door seams. Inside drivers door reinforced and padded. Optional halo bar or rollover bar attached to rear seat bar. 16. Drivers Protection-Non-Mandatory: 4 point cage consisting of the mandatory driving protection PLUS a 3 bar welded rear of the dash and forward of the driver with 4 plates welded to each end, a 3 bar welded between the front and rear car on the passenger side. No restriction to the bar size inside the drivers door. A roll bar will be allowed only welded to the rear bar and not extended 3 outside of the car. Inside drivers door reinforced and padded. 17. Car Numbers: A roof top sign large enough to display your registered car number on both sides. Number size 12 tall by 2 wide driver and passenger doors will have numbers 16 x16 x2 wide. Dark on Light, Light on Dark. 18. Damage/Patches: Sheet metal repair not to exceed 18 gauge in thickness and no more than 1 overlapping the hole. Existing patches must be repaired by welding, no rebar, angle iron, plate, concrete etc., shall be used to add strength to the car. 19. Re-Inspection: Main event cars are subject to re-inspection at the conclusion of the event. A protest fee of $250.00 in cash to contest another car must be posted with the head race official, prior to the main event. 20. Brakes: All cars must exhibit the ability to stop, if a car looses braking ability it will be subject to disqualification. 21. Rear Differentials: Rear differentials are limited to: passenger car, and ½ ton trucks with a five bolt wheel pattern. 22. Engines: Drivers may use other model engines and drive lines. Air cleaners must be in place, no nitrous oxide. 23. Drivers Safety/Flying Objects: Driver s door and driver s side of windshield may have vertical bars welded in to protect the driver from flying objects. 24. Welds: 7
Welding in the interior of the car shall consist on the following only: Motor mounts, transmission mounts, header panel, battery box, gas tank box and driver protection bars. The interior of the car shall be defined as the passenger department. 25. Wagons: Wagons must weld or chain their compartments so they visible or cut a hole so that they may be checked. COMPACT CARS/SMALL TRUCK 1. Compacts cars will race under limited weld rules with the following exceptions: 2. 4 or 6 cylinder engines. 3. Wheel base not to exceed 108. 4. Four wheel drive vehicles must have one drive line disconnected. 5. Steel wheels only. Any other type of wheels will not be allowed. 6. Driver door may be reinforced as needed using the limited weld rules. 7. Floor shifters will be allowed. MINI VAN CLASS RULES 1. Mini Vans will race under limited weld rules with the following exceptions: 2. Any stock, Domestic or Foreign 4 or 6 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, must weigh between 2,500 lbs and 4,300 lbs 3. All-wheel drive vans may be used, but front drive shaft must be removed. 4. Hood and Tailgate/Back doors: MUST BE IN PLACE may have 2 vertical hood bars (to prevent hood from entering drivers compartment) in front of window. Tailgates and back doors may be welded, a minimum of 4 six inch welds. 8
CHAIN/WIRE FULL SIZE CAR CLASS RULES Any car except 1973 and older Chrysler Imperials. American and Foreign cars, Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive, mini vans, car or station wagon. RULES: 1. Cars must be stock. 2. All glass must be removed. 3. All trim, door handles, plastic bumper covers, grills, head lamps and tail lamps must be removed. 4. Tires must be DOT tire, tubes are allowed. 5. Altering of stock exhaust is allowed. 6. Hood and trunk must be open during inspection. There must be a 12 x 12 hole in center of hood and trunk. 9 gauge wire or chain only to fasten hood & trunk in six (6) places. 9 gauge wire or chain can go around front bumper and rear bumper in two (2) places, one wrap if chained two wraps if wired. 7. One (1) battery only. Battery may be moved inside car passenger floor board. Must be secured and fastened. 8. Driver s door must have some kind of driver s protection which will consist of plate or pipe. Must be bolted, welded or 9 gauge wired. No extruding bolts on driver s door protection. Doors can be chained or wired up to six (6) spots each door. One (1) or bar or square tubing may go behind driver s seat, minimum 3 not to exceed 6. Optional halo bar or rollover bar attached to rear seat bar, bolted or wired to roof. Rear seat and halo bar is the only two things that can be welded. This is for driver s protection only. 9. Stock gas tank must be removed. Fuel storage must be located in back seat area inside the car, maximum five (5) gallon capacity. Fuel storage tank must be securely fastened. 10. No body creasing, folding or bending. 11. Suspension no modifications period. 12. Frames no welding of any kind. No pre-bending. 13. Bumpers must be stock to vehicle. No extra bolts or welds. 14. Engine & transmissions must be stock make & model of car. 9
15. Homemade or aftermarket shifters, gas pedals, transmission coolers and electric fuel pumps allowed. 16. This is back to basics if you have spent more than two days building this car it is over built! 17. These are the rules there are NO gray areas.
