Chapter Thoughts Chapter Treasurer Harla Lemmerman Hello, August was a great month to get out and ride. We were able to do several rides as a group. The 1st we rode down through Sturgeon Lake and ending up at the Fish Bowl in Danbury for lunch, (via many back roads and U- turns). After lunch we rode down to Spooner, over to Hayward, and then to Solon Springs for some ice cream at the Dairy Queen. All in all it was a great ride. Jim, Harla, Tom, and Kathy braved the heat on the 15th and made the ride to the Pizza Ranch in Hibbing. Eric Purdy, Michelle and I attended the Region E Rally in Green Bay, WI. August 6th - 8th. Our chapter banner won 1st place in the region. We are having our 3rd annual Chapter Picnic at our house on the 12th of September. Michelle and I will take care of the meat and the dessert, but we are asking everyone to bring a dish to share. Also, please RSVP if you are planning on attending either by calling or e- mailing us, our number & e- mail address is at the bottom of the newsletter. Our address is: 1331 91st Ave W Duluth, MN. 55808. Paul & Jamie Howard have set up an overnight trip to Thunder Bay on September 26th & 27th. We will be meeting at Brighten Beach at 6:45am and leave at 7:00. Our first stop will be the Rustic Café for breakfast. We will be stopping in Grand Marais (SA) for fuel and then 1 more comfort stop before the border. Last stop is the hotel. I will be contacting the members that live in Thunder Bay so that we can meet up with them or maybe they can take us for a ride. About Chapter D Socials Chapter D socials are the third Saturday of the month at 5:00. Places are different each month and will be announced in the monthly newsletters. Rides Chapter D monthly rides are the first Saturday of the month at the Thompson Hill Rest Area unless otherwise noted. Please come to the ride prepared to ride, gas tank full and bladder empty. Mascot Mr. Happy Chapter Educator Safety Message From the Insurance Information Institute The Topic: Motorcycle Crashes In 2013 motorcycle fatalities fell 6.4 percent to 4,668 from 4,986 in 2012. In 2013, 56 out of every 100,000 registered motorcycles was involved in a fatal crash, compared with only 9 out of every 100,000 passenger cars, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2013 motorcyclists were about 26 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled and five times more likely to be injured, according to NHTSA. (Note: statistics on fatal motorcycle crashes are also available from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.) KEY FACTS 2013 Crash Data: According to the U.S. Department of Transportation s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2013, 4,668 people died in motorcycle crashes, down 6.4 percent from 4,986 in 2012. According to the latest data available from the Federal Highway Administration, there were 8.4 million private and commercial motorcycles on U.S. roads in 2013, compared with 8.0 million in 2009. Over the nine years from 2004 to 2013, fatalities among the 40- and- older age group increased by 39 percent, according to NHTSA, compared to 16 percent for all ages. Motorcyclists were about 26 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled in 2013 and five times more likely to be injured, according to NHTSA. The fatality rate per registered vehicle for motorcyclists in 2013 was six times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants, according to NHTSA. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) said that motorcycle thefts fell 1.5 percent in 2013 from a year earlier, based on data from the National Crime Information Center of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The NICB noted that

since 2008 motorcycle thefts have been falling, but that trend seems to be leveling off. Von Braun Convention Center 1-256- 533-1953 More information at: www.gwrra.org 1 ½ Cups Vanilla wafer crumbs (about 45 wafers, crushed) 1/3 cup Hershey s Cocoa 1/3 cup powered sugar 1/3 cup butter or margarine melted 1 package (10 ounces) frozen raspberries, thawed 1 envelope unflavored gelatin ½ cup cold water ½ cup boiling water 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened ½ cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons seedless raspberry preserves 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Chocolate Whipped Cream (recipe follows) 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Stir together crumbs, 1/3 cup cocoa and 1/3 cup powered sugar in medium bowl; stir in melted butter. Press mixture onto bottom and 1½ inches up side of 9- inch spring form pan. Bake 10 minutes; cool completely. 3. Puree and strain raspberries; set aside. Sprinkle gelatin over cold water in small bowl; let stand several minutes to soften. Add boiling water; stir until gelatin dissolves completely and mixture is clear. Beat cream cheese, granulated sugar and 1teaspoon vanilla in large bowl until smooth. Gradually add raspberry puree and gelatin, mixing thoroughly; pour into prepared crust. 4. Refrigerate several hours or overnight. Loosen cake from side of pan with knife; remove side of pan. Spread raspberry preserves over top. Garnish with the Chocolate Whipped Cream. Cover; refrigerate leftovers. Chocolate Whipped Cream: Stir together ½ cup powered sugar and ¼ cup Hershey s Cocoa in medium bowl. Add 1- cup cold whipping cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract; beat until stiff.
